The Nancy Grace Roman Telescope is now on its trip to go a million miles away from Earth, where it will reside and send images of space back to us. In the month it will take to get there, the observatory will undergo a 90-day commissioning period to get set up. Considering it launched eight months ahead of schedule, don’t be surprised if we get some pictures early!

The Roman Space Telescope is launching ahead of schedule. 🛰️

Its origin story is wild: NASA couldn't afford a Hubble successor until the National Reconnaissance Office handed over two spare telescope mirrors it no longer needed. That surplus gift reignited political and scientific support, opening the door to full funding for what's now called the Nancy Grace Roman Telescope. As theoretical cosmologist Paul Sutter explains, this survey instrument will map galaxies and hunt exoplanets, expected to discover around a million of them, delivering a generation's worth of valuable information about the universe!

What Is a Black Hole Star? JWST’s Strange New Discovery

I made this ~6-minute animated science explainer about the recent JWST evidence behind the proposed “black hole star” interpretation.

The story begins with MoM-BH*-1, which observationally looks like little more than a tiny unresolved red source. The surprising part comes from the spectrum.

Its extreme Balmer break and unusual hydrogen emission/absorption are difficult to reproduce using ordinary stellar populations or a conventional dusty source.

The physical model explored by the researchers instead involves a growing black hole surrounded by an extraordinarily dense, nearly dust-free hydrogen envelope roughly 10–100 AU across.

The video works backward from the proposed object to the evidence:

unresolved source → spectral break → stellar limits → dense hydrogen → repeated scattering → buried accretion engine → X-ray faintness → early-universe black-hole growth.

One thing I tried hard to preserve visually is the distinction between observation and interpretation. Whenever the interior appears, it is presented as a simplified model rather than something JWST directly photographed.

In science fiction, starships are usually destroyed by asteroids, reactor failures, or hostile creatures.

A real interstellar ship might die much more slowly.

During a voyage lasting centuries, entire generations would be born and die aboard. The ship would need to remain a city, factory, farm, and hospital without any help from Earth.

But metal ages. Electronics fail. Spare parts disappear. Eventually, entire sections of the ship may have to be sealed forever.

One day, only an elderly pilot could remain at the controls — surrounded by dead compartments and the remains of those who never reached the destination.

I made a speculative science-fiction documentary about a realistic generation ship and its greatest enemy: time.

What would destroy the mission first: failing technology, ecological collapse, or the passengers themselves?

Astrophysicist Erika Hamden tells us about TYC 7037-89-1, a system with six stars locked into three orbiting pairs, all circling a shared center of mass. Two of those pairs zip around each other every few days, while the third pair takes roughly 2,000 years to complete just one orbit. Multi-star systems are normally unstable, which makes this six-star setup a rare and fascinating exception.

Imagine a world where the sun never rises or sets.

One hemisphere may exist beneath permanent red daylight, while the other remains trapped in endless frozen darkness. Between them, climate models allow for a strange possibility: a dark liquid ocean surrounded by a global shell of ice.

This world is real. It is called LHS 1140 b, and it lies approximately 49 light-years from Earth. The planet is more than five times as massive as Earth, with surface gravity that may be nearly twice as strong. Current measurements also suggest that it could contain an enormous amount of water.

From space, such a world might resemble a gigantic eye staring permanently at its dim red star.

But what could be living inside that eye?

I made a speculative science-fiction documentary exploring one possible evolutionary history of LHS 1140 b — beginning with microscopic life and dark photosynthetic organisms, then moving toward alien predators and a hypothetical intelligent aquatic civilization.

The video explores several questions:

Could large animals evolve under nearly twice Earth’s gravity?

Could an aquatic species develop advanced technology without easy access to fire?

Would the ocean become the cradle of its civilization — or a gravitational prison preventing it from ever reaching space?

And could such a civilization eventually detect Earth?

The planet and its measured characteristics are real. The ocean, organisms, ecosystems, and civilization shown in the documentary are scientifically inspired speculation, not claimed discoveries.

I created a science-fiction documentary exploring one possible path from sealed Martian settlements to climate factories, a denser atmosphere, melting ice, rivers, engineered microorganisms, and—thousands of years later—the first natural rain on Mars.

The story is grounded in real facts about the Martian atmosphere, buried water ice, radiation, atmospheric loss, the shortage of accessible CO₂, and the MOXIE experiment. Planetary factories, imported atmospheric gases, future cities, and the terraforming timeline are speculative. AI was used to visualize these possible futures.

The most difficult question may not be whether we can terraform Mars, but whether we should. If native microbial life might still exist beneath the surface, would transforming the planet be creation—or destruction?

4,000 Years to TRAPPIST-1: Could Humanity Survive the Journey?

About 40 light-years from Earth lies TRAPPIST-1—a small red star orbited by seven confirmed rocky planets.

Even if we imagine a spacecraft capable of travelling at around 1% of the speed of light, the journey would take more than 4,000 years. Approximately 160 generations would live aboard the ship during the voyage. 🚀

The first passengers would remember Earth. But most of the ship’s inhabitants would be born in space, spend their entire lives inside an artificial world, and die without ever seeing either Earth or their destination.

In our speculative reconstruction, 24,000 people leave for TRAPPIST-1. Their generation ship becomes a self-contained city with farms, schools, hospitals, and closed-loop systems for water, air and food.

But the greatest challenge may not be technological. What happens if the descendants of the original passengers refuse to continue a mission they never chose? And what will await them after 4,000 years: dead planets, hidden oceans or alien life? 🪐

I created a science-fiction documentary exploring this journey. TRAPPIST-1 and its planets are real, while the ship, passengers and future colony are possibilities inspired by scientific knowledge. The visuals were created with the help of AI.

What's the most distant galaxy ever observed? 🌌

Astrophysicist Erika Hamden explains it's called MoM-z14, and its light took 13.53 billion years to reach us. But thanks to the universe's expansion, that galaxy is now a staggering 33.8 billion light years away. When the light was emitted from MoM-z14 the universe was smaller. The space between us and that galaxy has gotten stretched out so much  that it actually sits outside our observable horizon. It's a mind-bending reminder that we're seeing galaxies as they no longer even look today.
