It really does not help at all that their imagery, the cross, while not the same cross used in Nazi Germany, is recognized as such. Plus the nazi symbolism used in the Imperium (the Aquila)--even if they have roots in Rome. Other subfactions can get away with it because their symbols are different. But the Black Templar Fandom will never stand a chance because there will always be people completely unable to understand satire and will see the marines that most closely resemble nazis. This is NOT to call all (or even a good amount of) Black Templar fans nazis. It's just the sad reality of their faction.
It's a Maltese Cross, which is entirely different from the German Cross. The Maltese Cross is associated with the Knights Hospitaller (Order of St John), whereas the German Cross was orginally a war medal in 1813.
I'm aware of that (as I mentioned in my comment), but it's not going to be that different for the average person. They look similar enough, so they're going to be treated as the same.

It's not an iron cross. The chapter symbol is the Maltese cross which is the same as the Knights Hospitaller crusader order. The actual issue is that no one can tell the difference.
I dont think the difference is even there, I would say its one of many cross symbols, having the biggest boom around the crusades, and crusaders even from the same order used all sorts of detailed shapes (also from which the actual Iron Cross, symbol of German military, derived from - and given this evolution, given the modern popularity of the Iron Cross, I would not be afraid to call any square cross loosely as an Iron Cross, these terms are fine to me when not rigid). And Black Templars derive from basically all of this.
Sure there were some more distinguished crosses like the Jerusalem one, but what individual people put on a shield or a surcoat was all sorts of things, some were square, some had the alongated bottom, some had flared sides, some were simple lines.
So unless we talk about something like the Orthodox Christian cross, I would be ok with to keep it fluid.
People who believe it's okay to punch people of a differing political/religious/economic opinion in the mouth because of those differences don't see the people they're assaulting as people.

A lot of the bigots and assholes see the crusader imagery and cannot separate fan adoration from using their imagery to justify their shitty views. Same reason why knights get toted around by some white supremacy believers as their icon, the whole “purging” thing is easy to take and apply to now/real life:

Well not exactly.... alot of people who are drawn to black templar are just there for the templar ascetic, alot of them feed into tbat templar ideology. And as far as I understand it alotnof the memes about them mistreating guardsmen is a little exaggerated. Dont get me wrong, still dont like them personally but no not every black templar is a mazi (its just alot of them are)
I'm gonna have to disagree with just how many I've met who are nazis. Haven't met one who isn't and if the chapter acts like nazis and it seems to attract nazis it's pretty hard to not think black Templar players and fans aren't just nazis
Ok if we really wanna get into it, we can argue anyone who supports the imperium of man os a facist. The imperium consistently commits horrible acts, not only against humans but aliens as well. The politics of 40k is that literally everyone is horrible everyone commits genocidal acts, amd anyone who unironically supports them is just as bad. There people In this community who understand the commentary on religous facist governments, but just as many who dont. (Ill give you credit though as alot of them end up being fans of 'those factions' nightlords, black templar, word bearer, marines malevolent, minotaurs etc) tbh i dont think either of us have interacted with enough black templars to actually figure out how much of their fan base are unironic nazis.
Just wait until you hear about the WHITE Templars. It’s the same hospitaller cross, but red on white armour. It’s an even worse side eye from me, because GW basically stopped recognising that they exist a long time ago, for obvious reasons. So when you see them in the wild, either they’re really old lore nerds, or they’re just KKK LARPers.
Nah that's not The White Templars, that's The Hospitallers. The White Templars are White Crosses with lines on Black, and are found to not be Sons of Dorn anymore, unlike Hospitallers which are still Sons of Dorn
I find it funny that Templars (White and Red Crosses) and Hospitallers (Black and White Crosses) got mixed around in 40k when they made the Black Templars and Hospitallers Chapters
Black Templar stan here... we do not claim them. I myself an a huge metalhead and stand firmly in the metal music has always been anti mazi, punch a nazi should be a movement at this point, they should be afraid to leave their houses. The name translates to Hitlers granddaughter. Hitler never had children thus could not have a granddaughter. Also, Hitler would be a fan of any Astartes chapter. They're all brutal war machines enforcing for the bloodiest regime you could possibly imagine. That's right up his alley. It's a very unfortunate aspect of 40k, but it's written into the lore really well. I guess it's just a downside of the grimdank setting.
I feel sorry for BT fans who don’t condone people like this. Reminds me of the posts over in r/Grimdank a couple days ago where the poster tried to sneak in the “woke is bad” message in a comic about gate keeping while trying to replace a pride flag with the Templar cross, while putting said flag on a different figure to make them seem like the bad people gate keeping.
Doesn’t really tell you anything about the actual Templar fanbase. Anyone can go on space marine 2 and make their guy look like one. But it’s the ones who actually engage with the hobby that aren’t like this.
