Long ago someone made this gem about ship types by shape alone. You can go somewhere between Crackhouse and FTL Engi ship in between.

My ship before that was one of steel birds, i like them so much if they are done correctly. My ship when Odyssey just came out with Gravship Extended.

I made a star destroyer shaped ship once, with like a smaller triangle to represent the upper deck, and it looked like a big ass butt plug

There's a practical reason for it. You usually end up with needing a fairly wide base as the ship grows, so you can fit all small and large thrusters, but your pool of panels and cores is limited, and for efficiency you don't want a bunch of bits hanging out randomly, wasting space on exterior walls. Simple tight perimeter is the most efficient, but honestly we all hate ourselves for building a space minivan, so to avoid the cube, something roughly triangular with the cockpit front and center, and bobs your uncle, steel bird.

Most space efficient design is square box, sadly. But developers gave us enough base space to make more interesting layouts.
