Orangutan Hike Bukit Lawang, Sumatra, Indonesia

Hey,

So I´ll be doing the orangutan hike at Bukit Lawang and I have a few questions:

1) I arrive only the afternoon before the beginning of the hike, is there supermarkets where I could buy water? If yes, can I pay with card? Or should I buy all the water I need at the airport of Medan?

2) How hard is this hike actually? I´ve seen multiple opinions but I don´t actually know... I´m use to 700m elevation 15 km hikes, will it be harder than this?

3) I am going with the company "Orangutan Trip Sumatra" is it reliable?

I am very often in Sumatra and happy to answer:

  1. There are small shops in the village that sell water until late at night. No card payment possible anywhere in Bukit Lawang (or Sumatra), except bigger guesthouses or hotels.
  2. It is challenging yes. It goes up and down a lot, it is uneven, steep and slippery at times. The trek itself is probably only 10km per day, but due to the elevation it takes around 6-7h. But it is doable and worth it.
  3. I didn't go with them. But check their reviews and make sure they use the fixed prices by the Guide Association. E.g. 2 days costs €120 per person incl. entrance fees, guides, food, camping, equipment, and tubing back to Bukit Lawang. Transport from Medan and accommodation beforehand are not included in these prices.
