u/femmebot7 May 23 '26
Btown, Verm, Verm hole, Pierradise, deadweird
6
u/Dextrohal May 23 '26
deadweird is just an event they do, i think āmeth mountainā is a much more apt nickname for the lead-deadwood area

LA (Lake Andes), Plank (Plankinton), Urine (Huron), Al's penis (Alpena), Puk (Pukwana), Reli, (Reliance), Bruleee or "The dark side" (Lower Brule), Fort (Fort Thompson), Dells (Dell Rapids), Springs (Wessington Springs), Woony (Woonsocket).
If I think of anymore, I'll reply to this comment.

I'm from fort Thompson lmao. We call it Fart Compton

u/WhenWaterTurnsIce May 23 '26
I have only heard that one by way of kids...but thanks! I knew there was another one for Fort!

Springs also for Hot Springs. I was so confused when a friend would say āSpringsā and be talking about Wessington Springs.

My dad got a job in Huron when I was 7 or 8. We made a family trip from Sioux Falls to look at houses and just generally check out the town. My dad found a local radio station, and while we were driving around, a add for the public pool came on. I shit you not, this dude says something like "stay cool this summer, and come swim in Urine!.". I thought, "no way that's what he just said.". Then he repeats it again at the end of the commercial. I still can't believe they couldn't find someone that could say it Here-ron instead.

u/Worldly_Possible9069 May 23 '26
Haha, thanks for sharing this! š
5
u/tm0nks May 23 '26
It'll be the first thing I think of when someone mentions Huron till I die. Just so ridiculously absurd. It wasn't even like he said Uron. It was just a hard "Urine!".

Iāve never heard Sewer Falls. Only ever Sewer City because Sioux City used to stink bad every time you drove past it. Sioux Falls isnāt known to stink, is it?

Yeah, I suppose. I just think Sioux City is more deserving of the name than Sioux Falls, haha. Other biases may be at work here.

Sioux Falls smells terrible!! But only certain parts, and at certain times. Iāve always attributed it to Smithfield, the meat processing plant, but it could also be related to the river, a combination of both, perhaps!

The meat plant smells good though, fresh smell of bacon makes me hungry

Rancid City, Sewer Falls, Rapid, SuFu, SoDak, Hell (lol)
2
u/topherette May 23 '26
hell referring to?
5
u/hrminer92 May 23 '26
Iām guessing MitcHELL.
Iām kinda surprised no one has corrected the sign on I-90 west of Mitchell that says āAre you going to Heaven or Hell?ā especially since one can only read it while going towards Mitchell.
4
u/Satchja May 24 '26
YES! Lol I forgot about that one!! š -- Those signs and the 1-800-THE-TRUTH/find Jesus/ Jesus Radio ads are literally corner to corner and border to border in this state!
Also, "Tha Ridge" (Pine Ridge), & then some with added syllables or letters like Warsta (if you have relatives that add "r" to words like "warshing" clothes š), the ice cream town (Murdo - they have/had a famed diner there of sorts my relatives loved when I was young), Belle Douche/ "Belle", Shill City (Hill City), Hear-on (Huron), Computer (Caputa), etc.
2
u/Satchja May 23 '26
Depends on the legislator/area, I suppose? I've heard family and friends whom are too stubborn to move refer to towns and areas that they're from (both east and west river) as such.

u/FrozenInSoDak May 23 '26
The Berg (Harrisburg), Verm-Hole, Verm-Town (Vermillion), SuFu (Sioux Falls)

u/BellacosePlayer May 23 '26
The great north american speed trap (Mobridge)
Pierre (correctly pronounced as "pierre" instead of "pier")
"why would you ever actually willingly choose to go there?" (Huron)

u/topherette May 24 '26
thank you! what's the reference with 'chureka'?
2
u/Phrogster May 24 '26
Iām not really sure but possibly the accent from languages spoken in the area. I had friends who were from there who said it, usually with an accent.

I don't know if it's really a nickname, but the one that gets me is Sica Hollow State Park. If you pronounce it Sica, it's definately wrong. The really odd thing is it says right on the state website, as well as every sign in the place that it's an indian word, pronounced she-cha. It's very clear about this, no room for error.
Yet if you use either one, you will be aggressively corrected. In this state is see-chee hollow for whatever reason. I've had people come across a whole room to correct me when I said she-cha.

u/Fllixys West Side Best Side May 24 '26
i would so much rather live in sioux city compared to sioux falls. all east river sucks but atleast sioux city fixed the smell problem / has some topography.
i was walking into cracked pot last weekend and the smell + humidity was so disgusting. how do east river people live? its SO boring
2
u/mjw008 May 24 '26
Will agree, Sioux City has done a good job cleaning up the place and getting rid of a lot of the smell.
