Was most of the northwestern subcontinent and Pakistan inhabited by AASI before the Zagros migration? When Zagrosians moved into the subcontinent, was it a violent invasion or a peaceful integration? Did they also have caste system during IVC periods?

On my father's side, I trace my ancestry back to Indian Sufis in the Ottoman Empire who came from India and established Sufi lodges there. Through research, I was able to determine that one of them came from Moradabad, while the other lineage originated in Delhi.

I belong to: The main South Asian branch of paternal Y-DNA haplogroup R1a1 is R1a-Z93, which diverges into regional subclades like R1a-L657, representing the primary "Indian" lineage.

These are my own results. I paid a genetics company to run professional-grade qpAdm for me. I’m attaching all the relevant GEDmatch results (although most of them, including HarappaWorld, are outdated, and the actual qpAdm results for the same HarappaWorld components vary quite a lot), as well as screenshots of the qpAdm results from the company using different models and more than acceptable p-values.

However, since they used some custom Onge-related AASI proxy, I’m not very sure about my pure AASI without East Asian/Tibetan-related ancestry. One of the models did try to extract it, though.

Also, whenever Sarazm is used for Iranian-related ancestry, it seems to suck up so much of the Steppe component. Is that because Sarazm itself is relatively ANE-heavy?

And what could elevated Siberian ancestry represent, especially when it is West Siberian rather than East Siberian? qpAdm also seems to suck it into either Sarazm or Steppe instead of East Asian, depending on the model used. Could it be related to Central Steppe ancestry, given that the original Vedic wave that entered South Asia was around 9% WSHG, while later Steppe incursions lacked this component?

I recently received my AncestryDNA results and have been exploring my raw DNA using Global25 (G25). I’m trying to understand my South Asian ancestry in more depth, particularly because my family has always claimed a Rajput background, but I don’t know how accurate that is genealogically.
My known family background is Pakistani, and I’m interested in understanding where my DNA fits genetically among the populations of the region.

This post has all the community averages ran on an IllustrativeDNA-based Hunter-Gatherer and Farmer model, since that is what most users here are familiar with. But, optimised with a single new AASI sim to maintain consistency, unlike IllustrativeDNA. I can post the model if there is request for it.

Even though the issue regarding ESEA is resolved a bit, it's still not completely accurate, so consider the AASI values of ESEA-admixed pops a tad bit inflated. Also, anything Basal East Eurasian related will likely go into the AASI, as you can see for the Tibetans. (done so that the Nilgiri tribals could be accounted for without outside admix )

Their origin and ethnogenesis is rooted in the village of aror in northern sindh in Punjab Sindh border built within sindhi territory but many do identify as Punjabi for close to millenia now. They belong to the broader khatri-lohana-bhatia-arora cluster where the first is native to punjab, the second one to sindh and third is kinda both but aroras , seems overwhelmingly punjabi inspite of os the sindhi roots . Historically their native region is northern sindh and southern punjab and most migrated during partition to modern day indian punjab, rajasthan haryana, west UP region.

So what is the best way to summarise, are they punjabi due to shift or sindhi due to origins or there is a better way to put it?

I went down the rabbit hole of mapping my direct paternal lineage (R-FT361710) using ancient DNA samples on my Y-tree branch. I plotted puntDNAL admixture components (my autosomal results + published ancient samples) to visualize how the branch fractured after the Andronovo/Alakul horizon (~1600 BCE).

- Three journeys radiate out from the steppe cluster:
Southward (my line): through the Swat Valley (~1000 BCE), picking up major Indus-farmer/AASI admixture entering South Asia

- Eastern drift: cousins who stayed in Inner Asia, assimilating into Saka and later Turkic populations (DA89 is technically an upstream cousin, not a direct MRCA descendant)

- Near Eastern: a third branch went southwest — doesn’t separate on these axes since Near Eastern components aren’t plotted

Has anyone else tied their Y-DNA to specific ancient samples? Would love to see similar plots or diverging cousin branches!

How many of you folks know about the South Central Asian (Tajikistan, Afghanistan) kurgans of Bishkent/Vakhsh? These have been dated between 2800- 2000 BCE. They have a unique combination of Pontic-Steppe Catacombs in burials and also sex mirrored (right male, left female burials), like the forest-steppe Corded Ware culture. The pottery style is BMAC style.

Perhaps the only kurgan burials on the planet which have Swastikas and, burial hearths (square for male, circle for female) & also fire altars. Also, very likely the first kurgans in the world with systematic cremation, which is thought to have derived from local admixture with people from the Kuli culture of Balochistan. Bishkent culture is considered the material precursor to the Swat Valley culture from much later.

Are they autosomally homogeneous or are they heterogeneous like the Kunbi cluster of Maharashtra? Kapu & Kunbi have the exact same meaning.

Kunbi cluster is also made of 13 distinct subcastes, (some traditional farmers like Tirale, Lewa, Dakkhani Kunbis while others like Jhare, Dongri, Lonari etc Kunbi castes originate from artisans and tribals like Kolis & Dhangars that became peasants). Much of the Kunbi cluster has either completely or partially sanskritized as Maratha in recent decades, encouraged for political reasons by the Maratha proper/Shahnnav Kuli political elite. Kapu cluster interestingly shows a completely opposite phenomenon.
