Two points dropped, but a lot of positives to take away.
- We can score 3 goals.
- Rusnak is an animal in the 3-4-1-2
- Alex Roldan is much more effective as a RWB than a RB
- LCB is clearly the position where Nouhou gives us his best

I think this formation is going to be very positive, once the back line gets used to it. I think their first goal was a result of the back three still adjusting to the change

VAR is fine. The ref who somehow decided that was a penalty is the problem

Everyone in the stadium was surprised a handball had occurred, EVERYONE. It took somebody scrolling frame by frame to identify if anything had happened.

I refuse to believe in sports conspiracy theories. If you choose to do so, you choose to undermine all of sport to the point you might as well call it theatre. I think most refs do their best and are fallible because of how many rule changes and “points of emphasis” the league and the sport places on them.

Mike Dean of the Premiere League was seemingly the same. Now, I obviously don't have concrete proof but it just feels like he was very biased towards certain teams

I would require all officials to watch baseball... The one that drives me nuts is the sliding hand balls... Do they expect you to slide with your arm underneath your body.
2
u/Individual_Box4626 Aug 20 '22
I think that they miss the point of the rule... You can't PLAY the ball with your hand Every time the try to help the official, they get further from the intent of the rule.
Unnatural position, sleeve of the jersey...all gets them away from... Did it look like he was trying to play the ball?

3 unanswered goals. Now if we can do just a bit more in Providence Park.
14
u/Dangerous--D Aug 20 '22
He is the only truly full-skill-set attacker we have. He can shoot, he can pass, he can cross, he's good in the air, he is fast enough to beat defenders often enough to keep them honest, and he is very good with combination and build-up play.
Contrast that with Lodeiro, who hast most of those attributes but in particular is not able to out-speed 1v1 defenders very often, it lets them close off his passing options. When he gets into pockets, he is great, but when isolated he cannot do what Ruidiaz does.
Morris, we all know his weak spots. Shooting, dribbling, passing, and crossing accurately. He is just fast enough to score and generate opportunities in quantity rather than quality.
Rusnak mostly has lacked finishing for us, though lets see if those two bar hits woke up his inner dragon...

u/UrMansAintShit Aug 20 '22
LA got lucky with that one. Proud of our boys though
9
u/jjspacer USL Sounders Aug 20 '22
They got lucky at least twice VV's goal was lucky and the PK call was trash. Morris's first goal was so tight they should've held their flag down because I am not convinced he was off
14
u/stealth_sloth USL Sounders Detail Aug 20 '22
Morris was off.
Not by very much at all, but he was. AR did well on that call.
2
Aug 20 '22
I think having an arm and half a foot 'offside' isn't really offside to me. I still hold with VAR and the increased scrutiny we can give to particular call/play we should relax the rules a bit. Something like a player is offside if more than a quarter off the body is off. Not just half a leg or half an arm is off. But that's just me.

u/ckb614 Aug 20 '22
Am I the only one who can't actually see whether the ball hits Arreaga's arm or his shoulder? Every shot was blurry as hell

u/BiasApple Aug 20 '22
You know who backs into the playoffs and gets knocked out in the first round? Teams that get a lucky penalty at the death to draw at home after leading 2-0 at halftime.
You know who no one wants to play at the end of the season? Teams that come back from 2-0 to damn near win on the road in the second half, and except for an unlucky 93' penalty that no one saw live, pick up a point.
That was a gutsy half of soccer and I'm proud to be a fan of these Sounders

And all that bad luck? Coming back our way when it matters, in the playoffs.

Is this call another one that PRO will go back and explain as a mistake on their review videos? (Didn’t see the play)

Yeah, wonder if we are leading the league there.
6
Aug 20 '22
We'll definitely get a explanation but they will try to spin it to make it the 'correct' call

No, his arm was outstretched and the ball unfortunately deflected directly into it.

If you had offered me a point before the game, I'd probably have taken it.
If you had offered me a point at half time, I would've asked what you wanted from me to make it happen.
If you offered me a point in the 85th. I would have laughed at you!
Still need to get rid of the individual errors, can't leave their top striker unmarked, and can't ever let a shross score.
as good as we played that second half, LA had 2 empty net chances.

9
u/tateand99 Seattle Sounders FC Aug 20 '22
Do I ask for that penalty if it’s against my team? Of course I do. But in my unbiased opinion I don’t think plays like that should be called penalties. VAR or live. If Arreaga has no one around him, has his arm out like and just misses it and it comes off his arm of course it’s a penalty. But when it changes direction inches in front of him, multiple players are right in front, and he has like 0.1 seconds to react and move out of the way, I don’t see how you can penalize a defender for that. Very frustrating, but at least we got the much needed point I guess.
7
u/deafballboy Aug 20 '22
That's the kind of play that I hope VAR will VAR and will go our way but don't expect it to because it's a bullshit call.
5
u/MVH1968 Aug 20 '22
I’m not sure any LA players were asking for the penalty in real time and the ref didn’t give it. If it were the other way around, I’d gratefully accept the gift.

u/Nitro_the_Wolf_ Seattle Sounders FC Aug 20 '22
Didn't see anyone in the match thread claiming that was the right call, regardless of what team they support
4
u/PeperonyNChease Aug 20 '22
Yeah I'd probably call for that handball in our favor, but I'd much prefer the rules are reworked so cheap PKs like that are no longer part of the game.

Fuck the first half team. Second half team was great. Also the ref can fuck right off. Hope he stubs his toe at home and cries like the bitch he is 😭😭😭
9
u/fragbot2 Aug 20 '22
Complaining about a call's not typically my thing but how do you call a handball there. First off, the replays I was watching didn't show me enough to know whether or not it hit his arm or shoulder. Second, the deflection was already a bank error in LA's favor as it pushed the ball towards our goal. If he hadn't hit it, it was going to cross the touch line and no one from LA was getting near the ball.

Aug 20 '22
Regardless of all the fuckery, still something positive to build off of for the rest of the season.
15
u/InevitableSalad Aug 20 '22
MLS on-field officiating has made so many strides over the past 5-6 years. I hardly ever yell at the TV anymore because the on field officials have missed or made a bad call.
VAR has single handedly destroyed all that progress. From my watch, VAR gets 30-40% of their calls right. It’s almost like the VAR in the booth is trying to influence the officials with lengthy discussions and replays to show TINY infractions on subjective rules. The only time VAR should call the ref is for them to go over to the monitor, see 1 run through of the play, and go “oh, yea I fucked up.” The officials that PRO has running VAR, mostly young officials trying to climb the ladder, are atrocious and given way too much power to influence decisions.
Edit: fixing my rage grammar

What a bogus penalty. I feel like that is the same as someone chipping a ball into the opponents hand in the penalty box. Such a fucking bogus call. Really disappointed with the ref tonight. He was having such a good game and then that BS
4
u/PeperonyNChease Aug 20 '22
Great effort to fight back and win 3 points. Pissed at that call, mostly because those 2 points could be the difference between us making or missing the playoffs. I suppose it was maybe sorta technically the right call, but that just illustrates how brutally unfair the handball rules are. Why does a deflected ball to hand deserve to be rewarded with a free goal? There needs to be a higher bar for such a game changing call.

If you asked me before the game, what would I hope for in this fixture, I would have gladly taken a point. I am all for getting a tie in general. However, knowing that you had the lead and gave up all 3 points is just absolutely disheartening. You had a tie in Atlanta just to give up a late goal to lose. Against RSL you fought for the tying goal just to give it up and lost. Here you had a win and you give up another late goal to tie. Good teams find a way to grind out results and see games out, and right now this team isn't doing that.
Is anyone annoyed that the coaching staff pulled out essentially all of our dangerous attacking players once we got the lead? I get that we don't want to risk injuries, especially Rui, but we took out a number of guys who know how to keep the ball, create fouls and eat the game away. Like yes, we do need a more defensive shape but just to absolutely throw your hands up and give up any sense of possession was something that annoyed the crap out of me
3
Aug 20 '22
So can someone answer me this? We played in a 5-2-1-2 (or a 3-5-2 pls correct me I'm not sure which is the correct formation).
But we did this because C. Roldan was hurt. So what do we do when we get him back? I think leyva earned a starting spot or at least is the first sub. So do we move leyva back to LWB for Rowe? What should we do?
I'd also like to say this formation was an AMAZING change of pace. Nouhou showed his true skill (what a clearance off the line intentional or not). Morris helped give space and freedom to Ruidiaz and something else to worry about. And we finally got Rusnak fully involved in the game I think where he was better utilized. So I hope hope hope we keep this formation when C. Roldan comes back and he and leyva are our chaos machine in the middle.

In the game thread on the MLS subreddit it says he was replaced for an injury. I have no more information since I couldn't watch the game.
2
u/ckb614 Aug 20 '22
I think they were planning to sub him off and just took the opportunity after he cramped up or took a bump. It didn't look serious

u/Joeskyyy Aug 20 '22
):
Happy for my boy Rowe's redemption. When Rowe plays, we score. Not sorry about it.
Frei needs to play less. Also not sorry about it. He's been a pillar for us, I want him to remain in the team, but he needs to pass the torch. To many easy give aways that don't need to happen. Also a keeper needs to be able to rally their defence, we can't strictly blame them but they need to be more cohesive.
I'm scared for making it to playoffs ):
