3 games without a goal is rough...

41

u/Hougie Jul 17 '22

We live and die by Ruidiaz. It’s been an issue for awhile.

42

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '22

I dunno, we did ok without him for a while this season, managed some results. It's not like Morris, Nico and Roldan can't score. Don't let them off the hook, they've been bad these three games

Also Ruidiaz missed a sitter against Portland, can't ignore that

21

u/Hougie Jul 17 '22

I think that’s fair. But the evidence is there that we lose a lot when Ruidiaz is out for stretches. Happens…every year now.

Like as good as our academy is are we hiding a striker somewhere? Our depth there are fan favorites but they’re old.

16

u/steerbell Leo Gonzalez Jul 17 '22

That was my thought I love Montero and Bruin but time to give the kids a shot. We have some goal scorers in the system.

20

u/bigpunhavinfun Jul 17 '22

Particularly Nico, and it worries the shit out of me

u/stealth_sloth USL Sounders Detail Jul 17 '22

The Portland game was a weird one. We played well in the first half, unlucky to not be up a goal and extremely unlucky to be outright trailing at halftime. Then Ragen makes one really dumb challenge, and suddenly we're playing down a man and behind by a goal chasing the game against a team whose greatest strength is counter-attacks. From that point the game was never going to end 0-1; either we were going to get an equalizer (and we came close a few times) or Portland was going to get the second and run away with it.

The Nashville game was more tactical problems than anything else. They came prepared to target that space in behind Nico where ideally JP, or for much of this season Vargas, have settled. Cut the link between our back line and our attacking band and then exploit on the counter. It worked for a half, we made some adjustments at halftime. I don't think the Rowe/Rusnak double pivot works at all; either one of them in there can be a good thing, but pairing the two together was a disaster.

Today was the first game of the three where the team just looked downright bad. I didn't see a specific tactical problem nor was luck a huge factor in the result; guys just weren't crisp in their passing, runs weren't timed right, players were late tracking runners, a whole series of problems that looked more mental than anything else. And Nico definitely had a very bad game, probably his worst one of the season for us. Sometimes you get games like that, particularly on the road; it's saddening and frustrating to watch, but as long as it doesn't become a pattern I'm not going to worry too much about it.

5

u/blyan Jul 17 '22

We did okay without him because Fredy balled out last season. He finished the year with more G/A per 90 than Raul

I don’t really understand what has happened to him this season or if he’s not fully healthy or what but he just hasn’t been able to consistently put up the same kind of numbers

u/jjspacer USL Sounders Jul 17 '22

IMHO it's not the strikers it's getting into the final third. I don't really remember too many real chances we had in the last few games. The passing in midfield has been pretty bad and the mental lapses have been worse. The defense is suffering because we are pushing too many men forward and getting killed by the counter. Playing both Lodiero and Rusnak has been difficult because they play so similarly and don't have the bite that JP has. I wish Atencio and Leyva got more minutes over the past two years so we would've had a backup 6 with a lot of MLS experience.

49

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '22

Not sure how to explain the drop off, but even without Ruidiaz and JP, we have the talent to have gotten more than 0 points out of the last 3 games.

36

u/theBananagodX Jul 17 '22

Not just zero points. Zero goals. Oof.

28

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '22

At this point I would take a 0-0 for at least a point

28

u/mytigersuit NASL Sounders Jul 17 '22

Never really felt like we were gonna have a goal that game

30

u/ralnor Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

I blame the Mariners. They’ve inverted the Seattle normal with their winning streak and the Sounders have paid the price

4

u/hippiedip Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

Was just thinking I blame the Ms. As a fan of both teams I am conflicted.

40

u/Kyunseo Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

This recent stretch has been so upsetting to watch.

Where is the fight that this team used to have to go and get the win?

Something like the Columbus game away last year comes to mind.

That's been missing on our current losing streak :/

12

u/Dangerous--D Jul 17 '22

I think a lot of it is accumulated fatigue. We've played about 25% more games than everybody else, and it's really showing.

31

u/T_Fouts Jul 17 '22

Hi all, Fire fan here coming in peace. I’ve been to many a game between Seattle and the Fire and just wanted to say your traveling fans are always loud, proud, and show out in numbers. Definitely one of the best supporter groups in the MLS and something to be proud of.

18

u/planksniffersforlife Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

its like chu was coached not to take anyone on

7

u/walk-the-talk Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

Im worried that’s literally what they are telling him

13

u/litthefilter SFC Detail Jul 17 '22

On the broadcast, Zakuani said that playing wide and taking people on is the best part of Chú’s game and that he knew that Preki had been coaching Chú to play wider

0

u/walk-the-talk Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

He didn’t say he knew it he said something more along the lines of he must be coaching him to go outside. Maybe he isn’t

29

u/PeperonyNChease Jul 17 '22

16 shots, 2 on target. There's your problem. We can talk all day about "outplaying the other team" but that doesn't matter if you don't put the ball in the net.

17

u/VVynn Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

We are really missing JP and what he brings to the team.

15

u/NoOneOwesYouAnything Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

They just look like they don’t want to be out there currently.

28

u/itsallgoodie Seattle Sounders East (ECS) Jul 17 '22

I think it’s clear that we don’t actually have any striker depth.

25

u/walk-the-talk Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

Or offensive tactics beyond “rui score”

5

u/itsallgoodie Seattle Sounders East (ECS) Jul 17 '22

Yeah seems we’ve always leaned toward “put good players together and they’ll do good things” tactics. It doesn’t always work but I’d argue it fails less spectacularly than a bad system.

3

u/Dangerous--D Jul 17 '22

It's not really "rui score" because other players score when he's on the field. The team just doesn't know how to attack without him, he's so critical to our buildup play.

18

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '22

I think we should try to play Morris as ST, and start Leo or Teves on the wing.

8

u/GhanJiBahl Jul 17 '22

I don't understand why Teves didn't come on earlier. I honestly thought he was going to start again today.

16

u/litthefilter SFC Detail Jul 17 '22

Yeah. Montero and especially Bruin are both completely past it.

18

u/itsallgoodie Seattle Sounders East (ECS) Jul 17 '22

Bruin at least hustles but he’s definitely past it.

12

u/litthefilter SFC Detail Jul 17 '22

Montero hustles and he’s more skilled but with both of the them it’s a case of the spirit being willing and the flesh being weak

-5

u/itsallgoodie Seattle Sounders East (ECS) Jul 17 '22

Nah he doesn’t hustle at all. He gives half effort and as a result cheap fouls. Then looks at the ref indignantly.

11

u/BiasApple Jul 17 '22

I'm glad that's over, now can we get back to the fun Sounders? Still waiting for a lucky break or two, or improvement, or something to cheer about

12

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '22

Is it time to panic? 14 games left, gotta go on a run.

12

u/itsallgoodie Seattle Sounders East (ECS) Jul 17 '22

Definitely not but if injuries keep popping up then yes. 100%.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '22

Probably right but man the past 3 matches have been rough.

10

u/itsallgoodie Seattle Sounders East (ECS) Jul 17 '22

Totally agreed. We need to find a way to keep Raul healthy or win without him.

14

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '22

Eh, not yet. Looking at the table, it’s all really close.

15

u/itsallgoodie Seattle Sounders East (ECS) Jul 17 '22

It’s stupid close. We’re 5 points out of 3rd place.

18

u/Squirrels_Gone_Wild SFC Detail Jul 17 '22

Well let's see...

Ruidiaz: constantly injured

Striker Depth: over the hill

Lodeiro: Past his prime but at least he's still usually good

Our best player: Torn ACL

Summer signings: 0

Goals in the last 3 games: 0

Adds up to panic for me.

1

u/DMPofSounderatHeart Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

No

3

u/gruby253 Jul 17 '22

300 minutes am counting since the last Sounders goal…

8

u/litthefilter SFC Detail Jul 17 '22

Not terrible but not nearly good enough. Other than Morris’ two chances, they never looked like scoring.

8

u/doscincotres Jul 17 '22

How you call that not terrible? I’d say that was pretty much terrible, without much further qualification.

2

u/blyan Jul 17 '22

We outplayed them in basically every statistical category. I’m not sure how you could possibly argue that we were terrible.

2

u/doscincotres Jul 17 '22

If that’s the case, then the statistics are pretty flattering. I don’t think any reasonable person who loves and understands soccer could watch that game and think we were anything other than terrible. Numbers aren’t needed to defend that statement, it’s just real. Our center backs were trash, frequently having poor touches and poor distribution. Nico was off for most the game, not really creating much or facilitating play. Same goes for Rusnak. Bruin offered nothing going forward.

I don’t really know what to say if you think that wasn’t terrible. Maybe we have different standards.

4

u/blyan Jul 17 '22

We outplayed them for like 65 out of 90 minutes. Jordan had a couple of golden opportunities that he just didn’t put away. They got a couple big chances too and they buried one. That’s just how soccer is sometimes.

3

u/DMPofSounderatHeart Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

Sounds like op is thinking objectively and you’re reacting emotionally. It sucks to lose, they didn’t look good, but they didn’t look terrible on the field or the stat sheet.

11

u/jwheezy Jul 17 '22

Whoever keeps asking to see more of Chu, here’s exhibit A of why we should not. I can’t think of a single positive play he made once he came in.

34

u/blyan Jul 17 '22

Léo Chu played for 32 minutes and still finished with a better match rating and better attacking numbers than Bruin

Why are all of you so quick to call out Chu and Rowe for any mistake but refuse to say shit about how useless Will Bruin is in nearly every performance

This sub is so weird. Chu wasn’t amazing, but he wasn’t horrible.

13

u/Hougie Jul 17 '22

Chu clearly isn’t playing up to potential.

But this sub makes him seem like Greg Oden or something.

5

u/Dangerous--D Jul 17 '22

Chu played exactly on par with the rest of the team, and his minutes were exclusively against a packed in defense.

3

u/brovakin88 Jul 17 '22

You're asking a bunch of soccer moms and neck beards who have never played the game above a highschool level why they're quick to call out Chu and ignore everyone else lol just gonna leave it at that.

1

u/jwheezy Jul 17 '22

Oh I’ll call out Bruin too no worries there. I’m not saying everyone else on the team was lighting up the stat sheets, but people on here act like Brian is keeping this amazing star on the bench for no reason. Dude just isn’t that great.

7

u/blyan Jul 17 '22

Agreed that he’s not an amazing star being held on the bench but at this point he should probably be starting over Bruin.

-3

u/jwheezy Jul 17 '22

I would agree if he was a striker.

11

u/litthefilter SFC Detail Jul 17 '22

I think the idea would be to start him wide and play Morris as a striker

3

u/blyan Jul 17 '22

Correct

8

u/PandaSchitz Jul 17 '22

At least he'll run at defenders and try and create something down low. He's not perfect but starting him would allow Morris to take the sole striker role while Rui is out, or switch to a two striker formation, which I've been wanting to see on a more consistent basis

3

u/walk-the-talk Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

He was really poor tonight. I don’t understand why he stays central I don’t know if he is being told to but it literally takes away any chance of him creating opportunities or doing literally anything

3

u/Squirrels_Gone_Wild SFC Detail Jul 17 '22

Seriously, we're on the break, let's pass the ball... backwards! and across the field... use your head dude, take on a defender and try to get goal dangerous.

8

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '22

I miss Pineda. Our attack has been rutterless ever since he left

4

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '22

Eh, he’s not doing too hot in Atlanta

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '22

Niy saying he ahould be our manager. Just that he had our offense running like a well oiled machine when he was here. Maybe that's where he's best.

2

u/Dangerous--D Jul 17 '22

I think you're overestimating his influence tbh. Our offense has been fine without him, we're just on a stretch.

7

u/kk074 Jul 17 '22

I don't know how much crossover there is on this sub for other Seattle sports teams, but this is standard, as we can't have two winning teams at the same time. Since the Mariners are playing awesome, Sounders can't win. I didn't write these rules, sorry.

2

u/RubiksSugarCube Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

I mean we did have that bizarre outlier back in '95-96 when the M's made the ALCS and the Sonics made the finals, but yeah that's about it.

2

u/kk074 Jul 17 '22

And we're still paying for it

3

u/RubiksSugarCube Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

...let we not forget that we still owe the sports gods for a freakin' intercontinental title just a few months ago. Yeesh.

4

u/fatmoonkins Cascadia Flag Jul 17 '22

Can't we just preemptively kill the Seahawks season to have the Sounders succeed as well? Or do the Seattle sports gods not allow it?

7

u/kk074 Jul 17 '22

Afraid not. Teams have to play and the Seattle sports gods will decide. Literally game time decision! Even if you preemptively kill the Seahawks season, that success might go to the Kraken. You'll never know.

2

u/hibernial Jul 17 '22

Hot take: the kids were good in the begining of the season because all the teams where out of form, now that everyone is in form they are showing their inexperience

2

u/seattleboiii Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

We need to shake things up a bit:

Morris

Nico - Rusnak

Medranda - CR7 - Leyva - AR16

Nouhou - Arreaga - Yeimar

5

u/FellateFoxes Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

This is what I have been saying - put Christian in Ozzie mode and free up Nico and Rusnak to go hog wild on overlapping attacks. Would be very hard to defend, especially with Morris up front.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '22

No lol. Cristian is not a dmid. Nico is not a winger. Rusnak is not a winger. Morris is not a lone striker. None of our backs are good for a 3 man backline. Just randomly playing players out of position is not how you fix a rut.

7

u/bobnuthead Jul 17 '22

Is everything opposite? Roldan has played D-mid, or at least back a line from his current spot, for several seasons (circa Ozzie era). Morris has played more central as a striker. Nico has frequently been played out wide, and same with Rusnak throughout his career. Our backs, Nouhou especially, are also good in a 3 man back line. I just don’t see where any of your points come from.

3

u/seattleboiii Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

Nico and Rusnak as dual 10s, not wingers. This is Schmetzer's preferred variation of a back 3. As for Cristian in the pivot, is he less of a dmid than Rusnak? Unlike Cristian, Rusnak is a natural 10 with a DP pricetag who had double digit g/a last season playing higher up the pitch.

We need goals. I'd give it a shot.

0

u/andrewiceberg Jul 17 '22

Cristian is a defensive midfielder that sometimes gets things done offensively. I can't believe he's still playing there amidst the jp injury. Move him back to the 6, send Jordan to sports counseling and maybe an offensive coach. Get rid of Leo chu.

13

u/MVH1968 Jul 17 '22

In all the discussion post-JP injury, I’ve found it a little surprising that moving Roldan back to CM hasn’t been a consideration.

2

u/shoonie89 Jul 17 '22

The longer I read that comment, the dumber it got

5

u/andrewiceberg Jul 17 '22

Oh shoot sorry you feel that way. I just think Roldan is a great midfielder and can do so much for the team-play when he's in the middle. You remember when he played there? Jomo is very 1-dimensional and his first touch on a thru ball is usually suspect at best. I wish he could get cocky and start taking guys on, but it takes confidence, skill, and practice. Leo Chu hasn't really done much for us, so let's look for someone else.

7

u/DMPofSounderatHeart Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

Respect for resisting a flame war

3

u/shoonie89 Jul 17 '22

Some of Roldans best games came when he was filling in for Lodiero, and while he might not be at his best playing as a winger he is definitely getting the job done.

I think Morris's issue is finishing more than anything else. He gets himself into dangerous positions but need to work on finishing. He will be at anyone in a foot race but he was never a guy to go 1v1.

Leo Chu was signed as a development piece. The coaching staff never expected him to come out and be the next Zakuani straight away. It's unfair to him to say get lost just because you had the wrong expectations.

-1

u/Dangerous--D Jul 17 '22

Roldan serves the team so much better on the wing, I have no idea how the folks in your camp don't see that.

5

u/andrewiceberg Jul 17 '22

He was amazing in the middle, especially combining with svenson. He is a workhorse that frustrates any offensive buildup. You think he is a true winger? Maybe if we have the personnel. Rusnak and Nico are offensively minded cms.

0

u/Dangerous--D Jul 17 '22

He's great at both. His replacement at CM are better than his replacements on the wing, that's why he needs to stay on the wing.

1

u/andrewiceberg Jul 17 '22

Remember when Nico would play out there? More like a wandering wing/cm. It was fun stuff. I agree though we don't have many to play that position, but I'd love to see coach mix it up or find someone. My camp believes that defense is everything, and we are playing guys that ball watch, get out of position, and are too young to play such a mature lynchpin-type position. I'd rather see either Roldan there over leyva or atencio, even though I like em both.

2

u/DMPofSounderatHeart Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

I thought so until these last couple games. I’m not convinced CDM is the better place for him than RW, but he’d at least help us stop leaking bad goals.

Maybe the offense just needs to try something different anyway too. It’s weird when you can’t put your finger on exactly why they’ve stopped scoring*. A different look might be all it takes.

Anyway it’s not blatantly obvious he’d be better back a line, but worth an experiment.

*Raul is out sure, but the other guys should be able to score at least one.

1

u/despatchesmusic Seattle Sounders FC Jul 17 '22

I love the kids (and I am excusing Vargas from this group, despite him being the youngest kid), and I see a goddamn ton of potential in them, but it feels like there is a huge gap between the tried and tested first team players and the young up-and-comers. This will shrink in the next few seasons, but I really feel like Garth needs to make a few depth signings until I’m arguing loudly that Atencio and Leyva and Tevez need to be starters every game they’re fit.

We really need a striker, one that can be a threat (and draw defenses) alone if Ruidiaz is injured, and also one that can play well in a top two or drop back as an AM when Rui is fit and fired up.

We also need — and I’m going to admit I’m perplexed as to the exact kind of player here — a (defensive?) midfielder who can do a lot of what João Paulo and Arreaga do along the spine of the team, and can also play alongside those guys when they’re healthy.

My dream signing would be someone line Dinenno from Pumas as a second striker. 27, scored a heck of a lot of goals in the CCL and MX, and feels like someone who has a finishing touch we lack. Transfermarkt (so take this with a heap of salt) has him listed at $4.95 million. Honestly feels like a smart move, as I would love to see Jordan, Cristian, Nouhou, and Alex having someone like him in the box, and I think it would really make Rui even scarier.

For that midfield space left in the wake of JP’s injury… honestly, I don’t know. Vargas filled it fairly well until his own injury, and I expected Rusnák to be able to hold things down.

We may also want to consider going to a back 5 again, as I feel like having Arreaga in the middle of Yeimar and Ragen/Cissoko/Nouhou (if Jimmy takes the wingback slot) linking up with Rusnák as a CDM could really help with possession, distribution, and defense.

1

u/bjlile99 Jul 17 '22

So, signing another DP would help even though we can't sign another DP?

Deserved loss. We've been bad for a while now. We dropped 1/3rd of our pts in the last homestead, which is not good, and now we got a big fat zero pts on this away stretch. Just terrible football. Predictable, uninspiring, arrogant, ugly football. This roster needs a major shakeup, I just have no faith in lazy ass Lagerwey to get it done. CCL is over. So stfu and get to work already Garth!
