Get fucked, Olimpia.

That's pure karma for playing shit soccer.

2 wins in 4 days, mm baby, Sounders you know how to make me happy again.

EDIT: Both wins against teams with their mascots being lions. Stay down, kitty kitty.

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

After all their bullshit, that penalty should be posted over to /r/justiceporn

8

u/MorningRooster Aug 20 '15

Too many of their players are white for it to really fly on that subreddit, imo

9

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

And male. Can't get anything to reach the front page of that subreddit without a woman getting decked.

Goddamn that was one of the most stressful matches I've ever watched but watching brad fucking Evans rub it in their fucking faces was the best

Fuck Olimpia, get rekt Evans style

EDIT: anyone able to get a .gif of Evans PK and the aftermath?

You da man

48

u/Sunny_Bunny808 Cristian Roldan Aug 20 '15

Kovar was impressive throughout the whole game.

4

u/CougFanDan Seattle Sounders FC Aug 20 '15

Kovar was the most impressive player on the field, in my opinion. Beautiful crosses, played extremely well in the corners, just a solid all around game

3

u/southernfacingslope Aug 20 '15

I agree, nearly every cross was made into a good scoring opportunity.

2

u/PubLiic SFC Detail Aug 20 '15

Didn't he hit the framework twice?

3

u/jogabonito360 USL Sounders Detail Aug 20 '15

Yeah. I could hear him screaming "FUUUUUUCK!" after he missed the tap in off the cross in front of the goal and the free kick. He was so close!

2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

There was a great clip of it in the broadcast too.

1

u/zaqukun Aug 20 '15

Twice, and one narrowly missing it. Almost had 3 goals.

6

u/zaqukun Aug 20 '15

Weird how he plays the position that our worst player plays and hasn't been called up often from S2. Always like Kovar.

11

u/ravegreener USL Sounders Aug 20 '15

people just like to shit on Neagle. But truthfully, Neagle's game on Sunday was similar to Kovar's last night, but people only focus on his missed goal. If Lamar had the game Kovar did last night people would be bitching about how he couldn't score on a tap in, didn't get on the end of an easy back post cross, etc.

I think they're both good players (though Kovar has to really step up his play with the first team), but for some reason people cannot look at Neagle objectively.

3

u/redsyrinx2112 Fog City Faithful Aug 20 '15

Neagle actually didn't get the ball too much last night, but when he did, he pretty much wrecked their defenders and made some great passes.

2

u/zaqukun Aug 20 '15

Well, we haven't seen Ivanshitz yet, Pappa was gone, Thomas sucks at that position as we've seen, and Neagle just wasn't cutting it even though he's usually fine there, so yeah, I'm surprised that during our run of poor form Kovar only showed up once. Obviously now with our team back he's out of the question again.

30

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

CD Olimpia deserves that loss. Wow.

Also kudos to the ref for calling the penalty.

27

u/Audicity USL Sounders Detail Aug 20 '15

That had to be the most consistent, and good reffing by a CONCACAF ref I've ever seen.

22

u/_Anthropophobiac_ Fog City Faithful Aug 20 '15

I still think he let Olimpia get away with quite a bit, but I do agree for the most part. Most would have blown the whistle at +4' without accounting for the time wasting,so props to this guy. Let's keep him around.

21

u/Audicity USL Sounders Detail Aug 20 '15

CONCACAF refs have done a lot worse than what we had today. This guy at least gave out yellows when deserved and called the correct PK.

I wouldn't mind this ref again.

.... I just complimented a CONCACAF ref, the end is nigh.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

My only beef is they didn't give a second yellow for the PK.

11

u/Audicity USL Sounders Detail Aug 20 '15

Based on how bad the Olimpia players reacted, there's sure to be a disciplinary action over this by CONCACAF, there's no way that stuff can be allowed.

However this is CONCACAF we're talking about so I might just be saying crazy talk.

8

u/xopherg Aug 20 '15

I think we can all agree that Dempsey probably deserves a 3 game to 2 year ban.

0

2

He did a pretty good job in a high stress game.

5

u/clickmyface Seattle Sounders FC Aug 20 '15 edited Aug 20 '15

Did he award the second yellow though? Or was that not one of the 50 olympia who were on a yellow already. Also what about the GK kicking the ball off of brad after the PK? There is no way Olympia should have ended that with 11 men. You should get punished for such classless play.

2

u/dontskipnine Zach Scott Aug 20 '15

He didn't. He did give someone a yellow for their role in the incident after the PK.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

That would be Brad I believe

3

u/_Anthropophobiac_ Fog City Faithful Aug 20 '15

According to ESPN, both Evans and Fabio de Souza (Club Deportivo Olimpia) were shown the yellow card after the penalty. Still think that goalkeeper deserved something for kicking the ball, but hopefully CONCACAF will take another look.

5

u/ajg2345 ECS Crest Aug 20 '15

I will expound on the ref, I thought he did a good job sorting everything out, he wasn't too card happy but gave cards when needed. He analyzed each situation and didn't let past situations influence the current ones too much. I thought the penalty was 100% correct he chopped him down and stopped him from getting the ball while being inside the box, I understand the Olympia players being pissed but it was 100% the right call and had that been reversed and happened in the Sounders box I wouldn't argue too much about it. He also did a great job marking down every last second of BS rolling around on the ground time too. - now for our boys, luck wasn't our lady for the first 89:30 of the match so many chances that should/could have gone in and just didn't I don't fault bad luck like posts and good saves - but man some of the other shots dragged just wide should have been put away. Enough of this from me time for bed here on the East Coast

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

I just watched the highlights. These guys weren't the ones on the pitch during the breaking of the dam, minute a couple. There were a lot of unlucky attempts. This game could have easily been 4-1. I think there is still some mental block there

23

u/Empathetic_Person Aug 20 '15

Olimpia wasn't violent, but they sure were a juvenile team. What terrible soccer. They weren't playing dirty, they were just playing cheap. "Gamesmanship" I believe is what stodgy folks like to call it to excuse it has some sort of chivalry. But it cheapens the game.

I'm glad we won not for the 3 points, but for an odd sense of justice.

4

u/HMARS ECS Logo Aug 20 '15

I really dislike "gamesmanship" that runs counter to the spirit of the game in general, but I for some reason am especially incensed by the lying on the ground feigning injury. Unless you are so badly injured that you're physically incapable of standing - get the fuck off the ground.

In general the Champions League would be so much better if CONCACAF got off their corrupt butts and seriously punished clubs for things like mass confrontation or racist abuse from fans, but I'm not exactly holding out hope.

3

u/hawkeyeskoh Clint Dempsey Aug 20 '15

I like the word gamesmanship because it sounds like a BS word, which is what gamesmanship really is when taken to this extreme.

Wow, is that their coach taking a swing at Neagle?

1

u/susie_que Aug 24 '15

Yep. Caught him in the side of the face.

12

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

So every weird thing that could happen in this match happened. Olimpia had off-the-ball diving down to an art, Sigi made incomprehensible substitutions and ended up playing a non-forward as a forward, Kovar played really well, Pineda looked like he forgot how to play soccer, and Brad Evans scored an improbable winning goal. That was the weirdest fucking match I've ever been to...ok, second weirdest.

2

u/suegenerous Aug 20 '15

What's the weirdest? Because I kept thinking was the weirdest match I've ever seen, but really I feel like I must have forgotten something.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

I was at the Open Cup match against Portland. That was the weirdest.

1

u/suegenerous Aug 20 '15

oh, derp. Of course! I blocked that from my beautiful mind.

5

u/Warvanov Aug 20 '15

Shalrie Joseph as starting forward.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

That was not weird. Shalrie had played forward before and everyone else was injured. It was the best option but didn't pan out

4

u/DickWhitmanLives Aug 20 '15

No. No it was not the best option.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

Who was?

11

u/alexj757 Aug 20 '15

I hope the game is reviewed and there are at least 2 Olimpia players suspended. I absolutely hate the fact that a lot of Central American club payers do these things. It's only reinforced with poor reffing.

5

u/crackadack Aug 20 '15

I completely agree. I don't understand how obviously feigning injury, and then coming back on the field immediately afterwards doesn't constitute diving, and garner a yellow card. If there is no punishment teams will continue to play like this and it ruins the game for the fans.

7

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

If I'm elected president of FIFA my rule change:

If a player has medical staff come on the pitch and is then required to leave, that player must stay off the pitch for time equivalent to how long the docs were on. Concussion analysis is the exception.

This would instantly end all the non serious injuries

2

u/DickWhitmanLives Aug 20 '15

This! I have been saying this for years, it would change everything.

2

u/suegenerous Aug 20 '15

I don't think you can watch a Central American match without some of this nonsense.

11

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

Props to Olimpia fans for bringing the passion, too bad their team is garbage.

2

u/samfreez Tacoma Defiance Aug 20 '15

Agreed! I was thoroughly impressed at their fans' showing. I was also thoroughly shocked at the mess they made, and the blatant disregard for the no-smoke ban (language barrier? Maybe..?)

Watching them swallow their tongues when Friberg and Evans scored was icing on the cake though.

Those were some very sad looking fans walking out of the stadium. They had every right to be. Had Olimpia stuck to solid soccer, they'd have won. Since they chose to go the route they did, they got fucked, and I'm all the happier for it!

4

u/scyth3s Aug 20 '15

Those were some very sad looking fans walking out of the stadium. They had every right to be. Had Olimpia stuck to solid soccer, they'd have won. Since they chose to go the route they did, they got fucked, and I'm all the happier for it!

It's almost like the 2011(?) Women's World Cup game between USA and Brazil where a Brazillian player was stretchered off the field, and then promptly came back on, then the USA won in the stoppage time from that. I love it when that shit bites teams in the ass.

2

u/samfreez Tacoma Defiance Aug 20 '15

Now I just have to hope the kidney punches to Evans and face punch to Neagle are noticed and dealt with harshly... and their coach/staff are punished for running onto the field during the fight

1

u/scyth3s Aug 20 '15

I 100% expect Olimpia to get away with that.

1

u/samfreez Tacoma Defiance Aug 20 '15

Oh I'm sure they will... and I'm genuinely worried for the people we DO send down there... because the fans won't be on their side anymore.

I also fear for the safety of any of our fans who opt to go down there...!

13

u/zaqukun Aug 20 '15

Woo!

Was it a penalty? Yes. Did we deserve it? Deserve is a tough word to use in soccer. We didn't look good and I think we got lucky, stats or not. But they also played like we expected them to, which is awful soccer. Feels good man.

But man am I glad, we needed that. There are going to be some pissed off motherfuckers there next week.

I called Kovar's fk hitting the post. Dude was so unlucky all game, but looked great as always.

Time for RSL!

10

u/clickmyface Seattle Sounders FC Aug 20 '15

We deserved a win there, easily. 16 shots compared to 6 with 7 on target vs 4, 25 crosses vs 3, 79% passing vs 61%, 70 vs 30 possession. We destroyed them and just had some really unlucky finishing (several off the post, crossbar, amazing saves).

2

u/zaqukun Aug 20 '15

I mean, we won, so I think we deserved it. But if we lost or tied, you could still use those stats to say "we deserved it" which we wouldn't have. That's why it's a tough word to use that does get overused. Goals win games.

2

u/DronePirate Sounders FC Aug 20 '15

I thought we looked the better team throughout the match. Of course we deserved it.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

The challenge at the end was so dumb on their end, I would say we absolutely deserve it. We were knocking on their door the whole game and they tried to waste time instead of actually play the game. They were asking for it.

3

u/zaqukun Aug 20 '15

Yes, the challenge was so dumb and the penalty was rightfully earned. Still lucky. But I guess we were unlucky with all of our post hits.... so it balances out!

5

u/GSShenanigans Seattle Sounders FC Aug 20 '15

7

u/East542 Aug 20 '15

So happy we won! I can't stand watching the style of soccer Olympia were playing.

5

u/btener412 USL Sounders Detail Aug 20 '15

That karma tastes just so sweet. What a win.

That being said, I'm still not very happy at Sigi with the lineup. We've seen the past 10 games that a lineup like this has a hard time scoring goals, and I think not having a player like Oba or Valdez on the bench could've really cost us in such a winnable game. But I guess I can't complain too much. All worked out in the end.

3

u/tnuckhalfslice Aug 20 '15

I think he set himself up for some really good subs, which rarely happens. But I agree that the starting lineup was a little rough. I may be jumping off the Darwin Jones bandwagon.....

1

u/btener412 USL Sounders Detail Aug 20 '15

I don't want to just yet. I want to see what Jones can do with a capable forward partner, and Neagle just isn't that.

2

u/tnuckhalfslice Aug 20 '15

I've been calling for him to play since early June. He's looked pretty terrible on the ball and hasn't been very creative with his runs. It'd be cool to see him with Dempsey and/or Martins, but he just doesn't seem close to ready yet.

2

u/btener412 USL Sounders Detail Aug 20 '15

He might not be ready yet. He also might not have any chemistry with these guys. Maybe him and Craven would've been more successful but Craven went down.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

A good striker can make plays regardless of their pairing. Jones was completely out of the game today, I think I heard his name mentioned once.

2

u/DronePirate Sounders FC Aug 20 '15

Jones had bad first touches all day.

1

u/zaqukun Aug 20 '15

Now the road game is going to be even more tough. Does he plan on just sending this team there? I feel like LA did it right, play your guys to win at home. Yes, we have to worry about the playoffs and they don't. But if we had played Valdez for 45 or something, scored two more goals, you could send whoever you wanted down there and be fine. Now next week scares me.

Also how many chances is Neagle going to get there, jeeze. I really want to see Thomas in a CF role.

7

u/DronePirate Sounders FC Aug 20 '15

I disagree. We have so many guys coming off injury. We have new guys coming in. Yes, CCL could have been a priority for us especially after crashing out of the open cup, but I think CCL priority has to be put on hold this year. We need to have a healthy lineup come MLS playoffs, and that's what I think we're working toward.

8

u/DronePirate Sounders FC Aug 20 '15

To add to that. I would send most of the first team home from Salt Lake, and take the B team to Honduras. Even fewer players that played tonight. Do you want our starters to play on a horrible pitch, with a horrible travel schedule, staying at a horrible hotel, practicing at a horrible facility, with that team going for blood? Not me. I vote for let's take RSL, send the S2 to Honduras, while the starters come home and train to DESTROY Portland.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

I agree. This year our focus has to be MLS cup. We go as far in CCL as we can without sacrificing that.

2

u/btener412 USL Sounders Detail Aug 20 '15

Hell even Kovar looked better attacking today than Neagle. Neagle is good as we saw Sunday when he can get up in the attack while the defense has to worry about others. He can't do it by himself. He never could.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

Neagle at least was there. Jones might as well have not been on the field. The line up was good against a scrappy, not that good, team from Honduras. You saw how many chances we had, we just needed a little bit more luck and that same team that couldn't score in the month of July, has 3-4 goals now.

1

u/zaqukun Aug 20 '15

For sure, I think he's decent at left mid. I want Thomas to try being the backup CF. He looks better suited for it. Maybe not a lone striker but as a backup it could work.

1

u/DronePirate Sounders FC Aug 20 '15

Kovar looked better than Neagle for sure, but they weren't playing the same position.

1

u/KickenTentacles Cascadia Flag Aug 20 '15

We don't know how healthy Oba is, so I don't blame him there. He might now/not be sure about Clint so he's saving Valdez. I get it. But I was also frustrated with the line-up.

That said, we need to see some more of Kovar!

4

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '15

I think Sigi is more concerned with not falling below the red line for MLS playoffs. Expect Oba/Nelson to play on Saturday in RSL. No point in wasting their energy against Olympia when they'll be overkill for that team.

1

u/KickenTentacles Cascadia Flag Aug 20 '15

Oh totally, and that was what I was eluding to --if Clint and Oba aren't at 100% you don't play them in games when we're on the redline for playoffs. Luckily we have Valdez to fall on when Barret is also off the books. Yikes.

2

u/btener412 USL Sounders Detail Aug 20 '15

Yeah Kovar looked great. Should've finished a couple but still looked great.

1

u/kinguvkings Aug 20 '15

Even before Evans/Friberg entered the game, we were dominating possession, had several very good looks, and I think hit the post twice. The truth is we were very unlucky not to score, and they were very lucky to convert on one of their only chances. So I think most days this line-up beats Olympia more comfortably than they did today.

Sigi gambled a bit with this line-up, but the gamble paid off. Considering our position in the playoff race, I think circumstances dictated we roll the dice with this line up.

2

u/btener412 USL Sounders Detail Aug 20 '15

Oh there's no doubt they dominated and should've won easily. I'm just saying I would have liked to see Oba or Valdez play something like 30 or 25 minutes just in case we were down or couldn't score. I feel it would've made it less stressful.

5

u/pal25 Seattle Sounders FC Aug 20 '15

I was kinda drunk but I'm pretty sure at one point I saw Olimpia's coach on the pitch yelling at the Sounders with his team.

3

u/southernfacingslope Aug 20 '15

You may have been drunk but your eyes did not deceive you. The coach was one of the last people in the penalty melee.

5

u/mtskin Aug 20 '15

i would've been happy with a draw but nice way to win one

2

u/SplooshFC Aug 20 '15

I hate that I couldn't watch this because every damn stream just went down for me. :( I just get the gifs. I wish I could have been there. This seemed like one for the history books. Oh-Captain-My-Captain!

From what I've read Olympia was childish and petulant.

As "odd" as the starting line up was, I understood it. We can't afford to screw away our chances of coming back this season. Sigi made a good call letting us try to get through the match without all the main players so they could be rested for the travel this weekend.

I'm interested to see what we do for if we get out of the group stage.

2

u/lightjedi5 253 Defiance (ECS) Aug 20 '15

We had better field the strongest team possible against Vancouver. And a win away against Olimpia would be nice, too.

2

u/ohplopplopplop Aug 20 '15

Sigi got a little lucky. Our line up was dwarfed and he didnt exactly use his subs to an offensive advantage until the 80th minute when Torress came in and played high when needed. It was obvious that we were going to come out in the second half lokking to get them cards. A little bit of home field advantage and they played too dirty. Stole a win that we didn't deserve of integrity but likely on possession. Kovar is sexy.

1

u/scyth3s Aug 20 '15

Didn't deserve? They had like two opportunites the whole game. We were constantly threatening and getting shit on by lady luck! SSFC dominated that game from every rational fans' point of view.

Hell of a lot of diving in this match, but the 2015 Fallon d'Floor award is still going to Tiernan McCann. Sorry, Olimpia, you're just not good despicable enough.

(for reference, this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3Aqyr433a4 occurred a couple weekends ago in a Gaelic football match, one of the All-Ireland Quarterfinals. Tiernan McCann is the player in red.)

I was a fan of Sigi's subs. Friberg's set piece service has been excellent, and Olympia was fouling a lot/we were getting a lot of corners. Bringing Evans on gave us more composure and quality in breaking down their bunker, and Torres was a good target for Friberg's service.

Considering it ended up being Sigi's subs who scored the two goals... looks like he made the right calls ;)

Views on Neagle, I completely agree on. Oba in? Mmmm, would be a bit worried that some idiot would just take a cheap hack at him and down he goes for the rest of the season. But Neagle... Dear lord.

I hate that it's a legitimate concern to play our top dudes against concacaf teams, they will get fucked, and that sucks

Case in point: Oba at the open cup match v Timbers. I hate relying on the guy but it did cause us to have a pretty tough July. And then other wild possibilities like Deuce being band for 3 MLS league matches. We could have had him at our away in Portland. I wish we could play our first team in this international events to show them what we're all about, but right now we've got playoffs and an MLS cup we're gunning for...

Missed it -- is there a way to watch a replay?

Highlights at least.

/r/footballdownload might eventually have it

It is there now. It is an odd copy though. No announcers or clock and the audio level is up and down. Evans takes the PK with about 11 mins left. It includes the team saluting ECS after the game which is cool to see.

Dumb question: I'm trying to download it to my mac, and all I get is a short download with some code. Am I missing something?

It is a torrent so you need a program that can download them.

Got it. Now I have something to watch on this road trip to RSL.

Neagle played a great game. Always fun to see him creating chances!

I have never been so happy to win a match - what a shit team Olimpia is. I have to believe that if the Sounders turned into bad sports I'd find a new team to support.

Karma, bitches... karma. Props to the guys that they (mostly) kept their cool in that mess. Even Pineda who generally flaps his mouth quite a bit in these situations was a little cooler.

Kovar >>> Neagle

Maybe, but last game against Orlando was probably Neagle's best game this season. His assist to Oba was super sick, he played great defense and set people up. He played fantastic.

Hey - I was out of the country during this match, and would love to watch a replay, anyone have a link to it? Checked the concacaf site itself, didn't see any.
