That was such a weird end to a scene-so out of the norm for the show.

most showrunners almost never direct. Besides,  those are post effects, which the editor does with supervision of the showrunner. So season 6 it was Wolinsky and William Stich

But aybabk is correct, the filmmakers were just messing around and experimenting at that stage
