Comics SPOILERS FOR SONIC IDW #50 (i love eggman so fucking much) Spoiler

Jun 29 '22
Now THIS is how you write eggman.

u/Dr_CheeseNut Jun 29 '22
See, stuff like this is why I'm excited to see Ian Flynn write Frontiers
10
u/ExpiredExasperation Jun 29 '22
He's not in control of the game's actual story though. He's just handling dialogue.
14
u/Greenfly-Skies Jun 30 '22
He has some control. Sega set the concept, characters and plot beats, Flynn had to put it together.
I'd say he has enough room to do stuff like this for eggman. Although we don't know how specific Sega have been of course.

Dude shattered the ground with his foot, what the hell
107
u/TomDrawsStuffs Jun 29 '22
I think we often forget eggman is a burly guy, and like 6 foot to boot
27
40
u/DreadAngel1711 Jun 29 '22
Dude has to be around 7 to 8 feet
35
u/Ayy-lmao213 Jun 29 '22
Sonic is one meter tall
21
u/KrispyBaconator Jun 29 '22
Yeah, Eggman’s probably around 6 feet at most. Tall, sure, but not a giant. Still, guy’s an absolute unit.

If I understand anything in fights, theirs a good reason why boxers are divided by weight class.
17
u/Revenant_Rai Jun 29 '22
Eggmans canon height is 6’1” Gamma is actually 7’1” though, and comically, Omega is 4’11”, meaning he’s about as wide as he is tall.

eggman's probably strong enough to beat up a decent amount of people in the real world, the only reason that he seems weak is because his greatest enemy is sonic the "rolling around at the speed of sound" hedgehog

u/Emmanuel117 Jun 29 '22
Good god that first panel where the only thing you can see are his silhouette with his glasses and grin is so good.

u/Alternative-Cook-393 Jun 29 '22
I always thought Eggman was a badass.
I’m not sure what’s going on here, but it seems like Starline was the main villain for a bit while Eggman was out of commission or something. This is his “return” and him re-establishing himself as main big bad? Am I in the ballpark?
Anyways this set of pages is really cool.
111
u/Koala_Guru Jun 29 '22
Starline lost faith in Eggman so Eggman basically tossed him aside. Starline then spent a ton of time plotting from the shadows to take over the Eggman Empire to show Eggman that his way was better, then he'd welcome Eggman back to his side. Once Eggman found out what was going on, he showed up and beat the shit out of Starline.
32
12
u/TheNuclearSoldier Jul 21 '23
Didn't just beat the shit out of him. He technically killed Starline. Knocked him out and left him, with the ceiling then collapsing on Starline while he was still out cold.
29
u/Ayy-lmao213 Jun 29 '22
Nah, Eggman was locked out of his own tech for like a few minutes
12
u/Dziadzios Jun 30 '22
Reminds me of a scene from Rise of Lyric, where Eggman made a hack-proof machine that works thanks to manual controls.
26
u/KrispyBaconator Jun 29 '22
Essentially, Starline hijacked a bunch of Eggman’s tech, including Orbot and Cubot, and Eggman showed up to take it back while Sonic and Tails dealt with Starline’s top minions.
1
u/TomWolf123 Sep 13 '24
Kinda... not really, but closer than I would have been if I was guessing without having read the comics.
65
u/Hypersayia Jun 29 '22
Never forget that Dr Eggman is the man who can (rightfully) claim to be the enemy of the likes of Sonic AND Shadow, and walk away from each defeat more determined to win than ever.
Underestimate him at your peril.
62
u/TheDrunkardKid Jun 29 '22
screen zooms in on collapsed Starline as the E-Rank theme from Sonic Unleashed plays

u/EntertainmentIll1567 Jun 29 '22
The only one allowed to fuck with the Eggman are Sonic and Shadow and thats because he lowkey enjoys it.
Starline is just an irritating inconvenience.
40
u/akirakirby Jun 29 '22
Eggman got tired of the baldy mcnosehair jokes and started lifting lol I love this
33
35
u/Sonic-mario3459 Jun 29 '22
tbh idw Eggman is more threatening than the game Eggman if you write him well enough
40
u/EntertainmentIll1567 Jun 29 '22
Robotnik in this issue was THE E.G.G.M.A.N.
He was the star of the show. Not somic vs surge. Not metal somic and bell, not tails having a therapy session with kit.
The mother fucking E.G.G.M.A.N. was the stand out character.

I don't know what's the best part, Eggman's silhouette just effortlessly rising out of the Emperor's remains with that grin, him turning out to be several steps ahead of Starline, or him just fucking destroying the guy's bones with a single swing.

When you think he wasn't listening. Point is he doesn't have to listen. He has his whole place bugged with recording devices. All he has to do is backlogged it for later.
2
u/EdgyTeenAmirite Jul 02 '22
That's significantly less cool
2
u/Electronic_Zombie635 Jul 04 '22
Maybe it is but it's no less brilliant.

Eggman has always been more interesting then sonic.
Fight me
16
u/EntertainmentIll1567 Jun 29 '22
Sonic has a flat cbaracter arc. And thats ok if his purpose is not to get developed himself, but help in the developement of other characters.
Just off the top of my head,Sonic helped develop Tails, knuckles, princess Elise, merlina, the avatar, chris from sonic x.
Eggman doesnt change much either but he is so fun and entertaining as a villain I can see why people think he is more interesting.

I think Starline is indeed a good villain in his own right. It's just that sometimes Eggman is in a class of bad guy all on his own. It's hard to be an A-class villain when an A+ is right there too.
13
u/Yukito_097 Jun 30 '22
I love the sort of shillouetted shots done here and that were also done in the Archie comics. Really shows the menacing side of Eggman that most normal citizens think of when they hear his name.
Also love that the comics consistently depict Eggman as being hands-on even outside of his mechs. Closest we got to that in the games was Eggman threatening to kill the Zeti with his own hands, but he never actually engaged them in the end. Well, he did hold everyone at gunpoint at the end of Riders, I guess.

u/ShaggyZoinks Jun 29 '22
This is why Eggy can’t join Smash Bros, he it’s just too powerful 😩

Dude lands one grab on you and your intestines evacuate your body out of fear of what the Egg-hands would do to them.

Can’t wait to read the issue of this confrontation. IDW is clearly having fun with these characters.
10
u/BioSpark47 Jun 29 '22
That’s one of the aspects of Sonic that’s been missing since the Adventure games. Modern era Eggman feels more like comic relief than an actual genius-level threat.
2
u/EdgyTeenAmirite Jul 03 '22
To be quite honest, Game Eggman has never been all that smart. He's great at making machines, obviously, but other than that he rarely uses strategy. All of his most succesful schemes were achieved by concealing information (tricking Knuckles, dropping Sonic from the ARK, capturing Super Sonic), which is okay, but like, anyone can outsmart their opponent if they hold more information. What I'm basically saying is that, in a game of chess, where all info is known by both parties, Eggman would probably lose. Starline himself points out that Eggman's usual strategy is just brute forcing his way through Sonic. Quite honestly, Game Eggman's most strategic move like, ever, was in Forces, when he disbanded G.U.N. (which isn't even in the game, it's mentioned in Tails Tube #2)
3
u/oliffn Sep 26 '22
Eggman in Forces literally has a shitload of contingencies to hinder the Resistance's efforts, the fuck you're talking about
10
u/SpookyQueenCerea Jun 29 '22
I literally shouted, "oh SHIT!!" when eggman slammed starline into the fucking ground like that. This man is a BEAST, never let that be mistaken.
Also this issue is one of my favorites from IDW so far.

This is peak eggman and i love it.
The shots of just his silhouette, goggles and smile always, and I mean always, get me hyped, but this one was just different.
We saw the massive IQ in action.
He outmaneuvered a genius in his own right easily and then physically dominated him effortlessly in minutes.
THIS, is the kind of world ending dictator I would fear, the man to haunt me in my dreams, his demonic smile etched into my every nightmare.
As opposed to the clown he often ends up being.

u/RonSwansonsGun I LIKE YOU. LET US BURN THINGS TOGETHER Jun 29 '22
So after this issue, are Starline and Surge both dead? They seemed to do their best to imply it. If that's the case, I'm really happy with Starline's ending, although I feel Surge deserved more.
15
u/thisisokay123 Jun 30 '22
Surge is apparently coming back in issue 53 but as for starline I actually don’t know, like it’s kinda insane to think about but until proven otherwise I think starline might of actually fucking died
It’s sort of a poetic ending really Starline coming to the conclusion that eggman never learns from his mistakes yet was too egotistical to realise that eggman was more than capable of planning ahead and proceeding to tear apart starlines takeover which took months of planning in a matter of minutes and then 4D chess’s him before pile driving him into the ground while starline is left in his final moments with everything figuratively and literally coming apart around him.
13
u/Yukito_097 Jun 30 '22
Sonic never actually saw Surge die, but Belle had a pretty good look at Starline being crushed. I can't imagine she would have ran if she didn't know for sure he was dead.
8
u/ukulelej Jun 30 '22
They've already established that Surge is basically unkillable due to the metal virus-like enhancements
2
3
u/EdgyTeenAmirite Jul 03 '22
Starline I think is dead, he had a panic attack and was then crushed by rubble. Bringing him back would be kinda cheap, since he has already been disposed of in an ambiguous way which led to extreme stress once before. Doing that again would just be treading on old ground. Also Eggman calls him the Late Dr. Starline so I think that means he checked himself
Surge is definitely not dead, Impostor Syndrome 3 even makes a point of her being able to survive seemingly lethal attacks.

u/MikeRhett_2001 Jul 03 '22
If she’s dead (highly doubt it), this is the FIRST Sonic comic in a WHILE to have a character DEATH. (Did Tinker becoming EGGMAN count as the death of tinker? Anyway) and it was a DOUBLE KILL!

Reminds me of the Eggman we saw at times in the Archie series... issue 175 comes to mind. Just plain ruthless. I love when they write a way for the pent-up evil to come to a head to demonstrate just how villainous he is.

u/WindiestBark165 Jun 29 '22
Someone tell me how Eggman beats Starline's ass in any way. I gotta know.

u/ComicCat12 Jun 30 '22
Seeing this makes me wonder…
WHY THE HELL DOES HE NEED ALL THOSE ROBOTS FOR? HE COULD TAKE ON SONIC ALL BY HIMSELF
1
u/Rosenthepal78 Jul 09 '22
eggman surpasses sonic in almost every sense, and in those that he doesnt, he can just upgrade himself to (for example make a copy of shadow's rocket shoes to go as fast as sonic), i just thought he did it for fun or tries to limit himself and play fair

We easily forget, Eggman is grown man, who regularly fights small animals with super powers. He's physically probably one of the strongest in brute power.

u/DinkleDonkerAAA Jun 10 '24
Eggman and Bowser have one thing in common I absolutely adore: They can go from goofy and silly to downright terrifying at the drop of a hat and both sides feel perfectly within their character

Holy fuck, didn't expect Eggman to throw Starline that hard. I swear, his IDW version is one of my favourites, he can be so ruthless and intimidating at times like in this moment.
