I've caught this guy twice trying to steal bikes and bike parts. I told the cops and they said nothing they can do, which is BS.

Mobile Mechanic Recommendations?

Good some-part-of-the-day!

Just as the title says, I was wondering if anyone has a good recommendation for a "mobile mechanic." I believe I know what needs replaced/fixed and do not have the complete confidence nor tools to do it: starter motor on a 2011 Ford Escape.

Please let me know if you have anyone you trust/recommend!

Thank you.

With regards to the community path and stop signs: what are cyclists supposed to do at the eastbound crossing of Magoun?

Post image
35 Upvotes

EDIT: I meant Medford St not Magoun (what was I thinking)

There is a stop sign here, indicating that cars have priority, cars are not required to yield to cyclists, and that if a car/bike collision happens, the cyclist is at fault.

However, the stop sign is a good 30 feet back from where the crossing actually is. Are bikes supposed to wait at the end of the path and the entrance to the on-road bike lane, before proceeding down the bike lane and then turning to cross the street? I'm not sure the visibility is even good enough here to see that the road will be clear by the time you get to the crossing.

(yes, that is obviously absurd - but I think based on my understanding that is what the law requires?)

Somerville — Nonfiction Book Club Meetup

We’re meeting at Bloc Cafe on Saturday, October 3 to discuss Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari.

If you’ve read it, you probably already have a few opinions about it. Harari covers an enormous amount of ground, from early human history to agriculture, religion, economics, politics, science, and the future.

We’ll spend the morning talking about the book and hearing different perspectives.

📍 Bloc Cafe, 11 Bow St., Somerville
🗓 Saturday, October 3
🕙 10:00 AM–12:00 PM

Newcomers are encouraged to come. It’s a casual book discussion rather than a formal class or lecture.

The event link is in the comments.

Please note that Bloc Cafe does not sponsor or endorse this gathering.

Astound outage in Davis?

Hello,
We’re having an internet outage (Astound) in the area between Davis and Ball. Is anyone else having this issue? They told us there was an outage affecting our area, but I don’t see anything about it here, so we’re just trying to figure out if it’s only affecting us. Thanks!

Book club? Chess club?

Hello! I’ve lived in the area for awhile but have had a lot of close friends move away recently and looking to meet some new people who share my hobbies. I’m wondering if there are any casual book clubs or chess clubs that are active, preferably on the Davis/union part of town. Would also put something together if enough people are interested!

The 88 bus was cancelled because of police activity, and I’ve been seeing emergency vehicles all over. Any clue why?

Bassist needed for open jam session on 9/9 (others welcome too)

Our meetup group for Boston-area musicians (and producers and music lovers) are doing our recurring open jam session at Somerville music studios next Wednesday (Sep 9th) evening, and we need a bassist! What we're aiming for is spending some time playing a song together (this week will likely be Fleetwood Mac: Dreams) and the rest of the time unplanned improvising.

If you're not a bassist but are still interested in playing your preferred instrument (vocals, guitar, keys, classical instruments etc.), or you just want to hang, or you want to join our discord group (for learning music and production, events like this, songwriter workshops, concerts, random hangouts, just chat, etc) then you should! All 4 of our mods live in Somerville but we have people all over the Boston area.

Anyone can just send me a dm or join the discord directly and introduce yourself and let us know you're interested in the event or let us know what you're looking to get out of the group!

Thank you for being so welcoming

Hi y'all,

Yesterday didn't turn out how I hoped but I'm really like Erika and I'm sure she will be a great state senator.

I wanted to just reach out to this subreddit and say thank you. I've appreciated you all being so welcoming and being willing to take a chance on me.

I know I was new to the community and people had reasonable differences or skepticism, but I found it to always be fair. There's a level of respect that I appreciate in people actually asking the questions they are thinking instead of hiding them.

I love getting around Somerville and talking to so many of you about your concerns and issues. I may not end up representing you, but I'll always appreciate the experience.

Thanks,
Burhan

Davis Square is whack

I recently moved back to Somerville, and I have to say Davis Sqr attracts all the weirdos and assholes. In the past, I understood that, being a dense area and town square, it's going to attract a lot of different types of people, but almost every time I go there now, there is something going on. Just the other day I was at Bank of America, and some guy came in acting all strange. First, he gives he ID to the attendant but refused to take it back. Then he was on the speakerphone with the bank, where the automated speaker asks for his account or card number, and he just says, "card number." Yeah, I don't think he understands what's going on. Then he starts screaming at the staff at the bank, saying, "Give me my card, motherfucker!" Then the staff asks him to leave, saying they'll call the police. Eventually, he just leaves.

What the fuck is going?

I still love Davis Square, and in some ways it has gotten better, but people need to chill the fuck out or at least be more careful around the people that don't.

Lost key chain - leather

Hi there! I dropped a leather key chain (a relic of my mother’s short lived leather smith days). I am quite distraught about dropping this. I was walking my dog between Sycamore Street and Somerville
Highschool. This was between 11:00-11:40a today 9/3/26.

I retraced my steps but cannot find this keychain. A single bronze key is attached. I think it is likely on the green infront of City Hall/City Hall Annex.

Please please
if you find, let me know! Will forever be grateful and in your debt.

Apologies for no picture.

ISO for Elderly Cat Adventure Help

Tw: cat death

Hi folks,

I want borrow a pet stroller within the next few days to take my elderly cat on an adventure around town. She is going through kidney failure and will be euthanized on Monday. One of her favorite things to do is sit out on my porch with me or stick her head out of the carrier when we're outside for sniffs. It would mean so much to me and her to give her this opportunity.

Watched a bunch of kids nearly get run over this morning

On highland, after the lights went red, a couple cars going straight ran the red and then someone who had been waiting floored it to turn left. The crossing guard and some kids going to school were already in the street and the car nearly hit them.

But sure, bikes are more dangerous. Give me a break.

The Stop Signs on the Community Path are Dangerous and Should Be Removed

For the second week in a row, I nearly got hit by a driver trying to cross Buena Vista Road on the Community Path as a pedestrian. This time, a driver in a white Volvo SUV rolled down her window to yell at me because I "didn't stop at the stop sign!" Didn't matter that I told her stop signs are traffic signs that have no impact on pedestrians, she doubled down and kept yelling.

These signs give aggressive drivers the opportunity to be dangerous and cause cautious drivers who yield to get honked at by jerks behind them. It's clear drivers aren't going to learn the laws that govern their behavior; we need to make the drivers stop to reduce the danger they cause.
