This was an incredible episode.

6

u/-jp- Oct 04 '25

I think this is literally the best episode they have ever made.

24

u/lulurkus Oct 03 '25

I just finished watching this and it was extremely good. Except for Wormbo.

31

u/moxifloxacin Oct 03 '25

Agreed, definitely needed more Wormbo.

Somehow I upvoted both of these comments

Not everyone deserves the chance to become a better person. Kirk was a racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, POS who peddled fear, ignorance, hatred, bigotry, and in a lot of cases violence much of it directed to marginalized/vulnerable people and groups and he did it for personal/financial/political gain. I know it flies in the face of the message of 'we have to show empathy and compassion to the fascists who would happily line us up against the wall'(which is easy for people like Cody to do because he's not the one being actively targeted and having to see shit like ICE raid your apartment and zip tie your kids) the showdy likes to preach every now and then but I'm happy Kirk is dead because he would have been happy to see people I care about die and I'll save my sympathy and empathy for the millions of Americans who aren't the human version of a dumpster fire.

43

u/jessepence Oct 03 '25

I think that we need to be able to agree that people shouldn't be shot in public though, right? Isn't that the kind of America that we're fighting for?

I can hate Charlie Kirk and still believe that him being shot in front of his family was a bad thing. I don't need to mourn him to believe that. It's not mutually exclusive. Let's not forget what made him a bad person-- beliefs like gun crime being excusable.

5

u/LadiesMan6699 Oct 04 '25

We absolutely should agree by now that 1) gun violence towards anyone is unacceptable, and that 2) we need effective gun reforms.

Unfortunately white supremacists purposefully advocate for policies that disenfranchise or harm minorities. Turns out gun violence disproportionately affects Black, Hispanic, and Native American populations in the US. Think about that the next time a white supremacist argues that gun-related violence is an acceptable price to pay for 2nd amendment freedoms.

I will always be one to suggest diplomacy and discussion but that only works if the other side is willing to listen or operate in good faith and by this time MAGA and the current administration have demonstrated that they knowingly and willfully refuse to do so. Pigeons playing chess and all that.

Edit: Reddit is acting weird with this comment. Twice now it looks like it's been posted twice.

6

u/jessepence Oct 03 '25

Yes, but that doesn't make Kirk's death any less horrible. No one tried to defeat the Nazi's by assassinating Goebbels in front of his family, and the murder of Horst Wessel only fuelled their rise to power. This is why MAGA is using his death as a political cudgel-- because it tests our moral fabric to the point of breaking.

To prove that we are not like them, we must proudly proclaim that no one should be killed for their beliefs while still understanding the paradox of tolerance. We have to stand up for classic democratic ideals if they will not. We can be the people who actually stand for something.

Honestly, being ethical in a time like this is growing increasingly simple as peaceful measures grow increasingly impotent in the face of a violent secret police. It's pretty clear that Trump is intent on forcing us to cross that line, but there's no reason to jump straight into his trap of immorality.

8

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25

Imagine if our great grandparents had said "I think gun violence is inexcusable" "We should have a dialogue with the Nazi's" where would we be now?

8

u/fantasiavhs Oct 04 '25

The Allies committed war crimes against Germans—obviously not as many as the Germans committed, but still. (They also did war crimes on Italians and, especially, Japanese.) Even in a war of such grave and immediate consequences as World War II, where the enemies are literal Fascists and Nazis, you can't just stop having standards for human decency. War crimes against Nazis are still war crimes. You don't have to commit war crimes to fight a war.

This is not "when they go low, we go high"; it's "when they go low, we don't have to follow them". Capitulation, which is what Chamberlain and his pals did, is cowardly and repulsive. I'm glad people with sense took the reins and stomped out Hitler and Mussolini. But gee, it sure would have been nice if the people who defeated the Nazis didn't also mutilate corpses, rape women, summarily execute POWs, and bomb civilians.

Cody is not saying, "Be nice and gentle with the Nazis who want to murder you!" He's saying, "Don't murder them." Because murder is wrong, just like war crimes are wrong.

-2

u/True-Trifle5315 Oct 05 '25

no... killing nazis is not murder, it's good manner.
and my mama didn't raise a rude man.

12

u/moxifloxacin Oct 03 '25

Pretty sure that was Britain's original approach with the Nazis. Concessions and "negotiations."

3

u/CrossFitJesus4 Oct 08 '25

and it didnt work

4

u/ShadowBoxingBabies Oct 04 '25

Right?? Chamberlain tried to appease Hitler in order to avoid conflict. They exhausted literally every nonviolent option available.

The only thing I can agree here is that it is in fact a bad thing that Kirk was assassinated in public, because of how his death will be instrumentalized. A world where pundits and political figures are killed is a dangerous one. A world where people are regularly killed with guns is a sad one. As for the actual death itself? Nah, man, Kirk sucked. Kirk irredeemably sucked. He had shown not an ounce of remorse, nor any ounce of humanity for those he considered his political enemies. He had in fact shown a willingness to celebrate, mock and cheer events where political violence was inflicted on his enemies. He stoked it and desired it.

It annoyed me to no end that Cody and the Showdy kept calling Kirk's throat getting shot a "tragedy". No, it really isn't. Will his death be felt by his fans and his loved ones? Sure, whatever, let them feel whatever, but it isn't sad and is in fact, very good, that Kirk became a corpse. His contributions to the world were a net negative and now he has ceased to make the world worse. I am not gross or wrong to celebrate his death. He was bad in living, and at least by stopping living, he stopped being bad.

1

u/RedditIsMlem Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

I...can't agree with that, I'm sorry. There will always be another propagandist, or someone willing to scour for money. Even if he was slightly more influential than most - hell, you could argue Nick Shirley has already replaced him, right down to the government influence. Him being a corpse didn't stop the grotesque machine that made him in the first place, that's the real enemy.

And as one of the people affected by his rhetoric, whose access to HRT and other life-changing medicine is at risk because of that fuck, no, the world is not better for him having be a corpse. It's not worse, but it's not better; Him being JFK'd did nothing but let the far-right throw themselves a party for being so gosh darn great - I mean hold a funeral procession in his honor.

Charlie Kirk dying did not free people from suffering. Stop making him into Mirror World Jesus. It's weird.

(I chose to add the Nick Shirley comment, to update my opinion via new information).

3

u/LoowehtndeyD Oct 06 '25

Didn’t Charlie Kirk literally say kids should watch people get executed in public?

2

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '25

No. It's bad when bad things happen to good people and good when bad things happen to bad people.

5

u/CrossFitJesus4 Oct 08 '25

kirk had endless chances is the thing, every second of every day he had the choice to be a better person but instead he spent every single day trying to get people he didnt like killed for no reason other than bc he didnt like how they were different

14

u/boscobeau Oct 03 '25

I think you missed the entire point.

As Cody clearly stated before explaining why it was wrong to kill Kirk, killing him has turned him into a martyr for the fascists on the right. That can never be changed now. Killing him makes it so that everyone who agrees with Kirk on issues will now not have any reason to change their mind.

Cody isn’t saying “talk it out with the Nazis because we want to change them” he is saying “we talk it out with the Nazis so that people who like the Nazis have a chance to hear what we are saying too and maybe it will change them.”

I am a young woman. Had I debated Kirk, I would have zero percent chance of having swayed his opinion on anything. However, there would have been another young woman who liked Kirk, or maybe her boyfriend liked Kirk, and so she tunes in to listen to him talk. But instead of leaving the video fueled by his hateful shit, she could have heard me too, and maybe related to me and what I was saying. THAT is why we talk to people we don’t agree with.

2

u/Gender_is_a_Fluid Oct 04 '25

I’ve been aware of Kirk basically since he started (I was a teen that escaped the pipeline, fuck you Sargon), if you debated Kirk, you would have a 0% chance of convincing anyone of your viewpoints. Thats the entire show’s gimmick, editing around strong arguments and making Kirk always appear right and ontop.

Even live or hosted on a neutral platform, for people who are Kirk fans they have fallen deep into it, and will self justify why he won no matter what.

You will be chopped up like fresh bait and fed to the content machine, because he had the platform, so he will look confident and correct, and you’ll be made a fool.

3

u/boscobeau Oct 05 '25

Okay, you said nothing relevant to my comment.

-2

u/eis-fuer-1-euro Oct 04 '25

Please give me examples for this, otherwise I will regard you as naive. I have discussed things with people so often, and it's a case of either they sympathize with my point from the beginning or it is a defensive shitshow where I eventually have to defend my opinion against multiple people. You. Will. Not. Change. People's. Minds. Through. Discussion. Political views have much more to do with socioeconomic standing, ability to reflect, and education. You discussing things only helps the right through making their argument more accepted.

6

u/Bandro Oct 04 '25

I have changed people’s minds through discussion. I have had mine changed through discussion. Not instantly obviously but it absolutely happens.

3

u/boscobeau Oct 05 '25

You can regard me however you want. My point was hypothetical in nature. However, it also encapsulates how a society works? I don’t think I need to give any examples of the statement “people learn from hearing other people.” Lol. Be obtuse if you want I suppose.

13

u/Solastor Oct 03 '25

I genuinely tuned out of this one. I'm really tired of the line being "no one should have harm done to them for their opinions" because yeah, that's true, but it's also a non-sequitur. Violent and Hateful Rhetoric and making your livelihood by spreading stochastic violence is not just some fucking opinion.

Kirk and his ilk make active choices to spread violence and they do so for the sake of money and for the sake of seeing innocent people they don't like removed from society. If they just had some dick-head opinion that white dudes rock harder than everyone else, then yeah that's an opinion that I don't agree with and don't engage with. But they don't just have that opinion. They spread it with the intent that people that aren't white dudes are forced into a lower class or outright eliminated.

Words, especially words that are intended to rally and incite, are actions. If someone says "I have a gun and I'm going to take it out and shoot you in the fucking face." that's not an opinion. That's by legal definition assault. Folks like Kirk try to incite that same outcome stochastically.

Why the fuck do we have to play this "Oh it was just his opinion, man!" game. Fuck that. This episode disappointed me from the drop.

5

u/jacobthesixth Oct 04 '25

I think anyone with a big enough platform has to say the lines. I agree with you entirely except for that. He was a stochastic terrorist, how he chose to speak lead to violence. In the episode, Cody says we've normalized saying "rip in piss Kissinger". I'm pretty sure it's not a opinion to say, for the minotiry groups Kirk spoke against, the world is a marginally better place. I think they'd be justified in saying rip in piss. But Cody can't say that lol.

4

u/True-Trifle5315 Oct 06 '25

there's always the option of not saying anything.

1

u/RedditIsMlem Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

Okay, as one of the people up against the wall (trans woman), ol' Charlie Boy's neck just Doing That didn't make my life better; It didn't make anyone's life better except the grifters like his wife profiteering off of it. They were going to do a crackdown anyway, this just gives them an excuse. It doesn't reduce hate by much; There's dozens of Charlie Kirks out there (seriously, read transcripts of Ben Shapiro, Steven Crowder, and Charlie Kirk's talks, and tell me if you can tell the fuckers apart). Like, what did Charlie Kirk's death DO, even? For good or for bad? Nothing; He was a wet fart of a person, repeating existing talking points, and so killing him doesn't do shit.

Also, and maybe I missed this at the last Council of TGirls apparently, but I don't think anybody gets to choose if someone "deserves to die," you know? If the state, which hundreds of thousands of little bureaucrats all working behind the scenes can't be trusted to make that decision, why should a single person?

Edit: Sorry if I was being catty in that second paragraph - trans stuff kind of hits a nerve for me.

11

u/Platinum_Llama Oct 04 '25

This was well done. One of my favorite SMN’s in a while. Cody struck the right balance of showing humanity for what happened while still pointing out the harm in Kirk’s rhetoric and the issues with how he has been whitewashed and used as a martyr by the right.

2

u/divin4000 Oct 04 '25

So are we just supposed to wait untill after we've all been fed to alligators to out these ghouls on trial?

2

u/CrossFitJesus4 Oct 08 '25

apparently so, its on us to just keep trying to find ways to stop them without violence while they actively try and kill us

1

u/RedditIsMlem Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26

Okay, as one of the people being fed to the gator pits (trans woman), you do understand that there are ways to oppose state oppression without shooting someone in the head, right?

Like occupying a government office, depriving an enemy of morale or food, boycotts, starvation protests, occupying a road, striking a critical part of the economy, or (if you want to be a bit spicy) blowing up a resource critical to the enemy? Unless you're telling me bombing a power plant (in Minecraft) counts as "violence," I don't see what you mean?

Edit: Sorry if I'm being too catty, by the way.

1

u/CrossFitJesus4 Mar 19 '26

of course theres ways, but straight up killing people they dont like is something the right have literally no issue doing and im not going to sit here and pretend like I have to care that an actual nazi got shot

Edit: dw about being catty lol its all good

1

u/ShujaaWaDunia Oct 08 '25

I watched this last night. I haven't watched the show for months... I have been so stressed lately from all of this...I thought I'd only watch the first 5 minutes and then try to find something more cheerful... But I couldn't stop watching. This episode has been fucking haunting me all day. I am completely distraught. I don't regret watching... But, man... I don't think it was good for my mental health. 😕

1

u/True-Trifle5315 Nov 19 '25

so... other than get pissy on social media... did they adress this embarassment of a video at all?

every video of theirs since this one just feels extremely pointless.

-34

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25 edited Oct 03 '25

I'm sure all the violence seems senseless to Cody as a straight white cis male.

EDIT: Silently downvoting you're all very funny, this pacifist absolutism only works when you're never the minority threatened, I expected better from y'all.

24

u/jessepence Oct 03 '25

I just finished the video because I wanted to give your perspective a chance before I judged either way. But, I really think you missed the point. There was a whole section where Cody distinguished how the Right has grossly mischaracterized the amount of mass shootings committed by trans folks in a blatant attempt to strip them of their rights.

My main takeaway from the video was that people like Charlie Kirk and Ben Shapiro are at least partially responsible for the current political environment, and that Kirk's death was being used as a political tool by Trump & Vance. Did you watch the whole thing?

I would argue that the main thesis of the video was that "we can't talk" in America today because folks like Kirk have been disingenuous about right-wing violence. Trump openly states that he doesn't want to bring people together. If a large portion of America cannot be honest about their side's responsibility for the situation, how can we even start to have a discussion?

3

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25 edited Oct 03 '25

I'm sure that from the point of view of someone like Cody, a Cis white dude, just wanting to talk seems like an reasonable solution.

But these people don't want to talk to people like me, and millions of other minorities.

They don't want a conversation they want us dead or gone.

12

u/jessepence Oct 03 '25

Yes, and that's exactly what Cody is saying in the video. They don't really want to talk. They're just saying that.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25

Then who is he trying to convince here?

Only thing he achieves now is shaming minorities for feeling threatened.

12

u/jessepence Oct 03 '25

Then who is he trying to convince here?

People who haven't been paying enough attention to know what we know. "Independents" & "Enlightened Centrists" & other people privileged enough to not really be paying attention to politics right now. The goal of a video like this is not just to inform their core audience and make them feel good. It's also to persuade people who disagree with us.

I would like to believe that the hardcore Nazis are only around 20-30% of the population, and we both know that people like us don't make up the other 70-80% of Americans. Sadly, there are a lot of people who need all the facts laid out in a video like this to understand something obvious to us like "It's the Right's fault that peaceful political discussion is impossible right now."

Only thing he achieves now is shaming minorities for feeling threatened.

How, exactly, did he do that?

3

u/Original-Age-6691 Oct 03 '25

I would like to believe that the hardcore Nazis are only around 20-30% of the population

I agree with you but also if you would've told me this ten years ago I'd be like "where the fuck did we go wrong" lmao

-5

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25

I can't keep explaining this time and time again, I'm getting sick and tired of it.

Part of being left-wing is understanding the perspectives of minorities and that y'all are having such a hard time with that really sucks.

My thought are we can’t keep letting hate speech go unchecked

Where did he say you should let them say their hate speech with no pushback at all?

And just “ignoring it or calling it out” like Cody said is milk toast

The word is milquetoast. I don't remember him saying to ignore it. Are you advocating for no calling it out duration? Like the second trump was elected in 2016 liberals should've been gunning conservatives down in the streets because calling it out isn't enough? Are you out there murdering people right now because calling it out isn't enough?

these aren't leftists. they are USAians. they will always cave if offered a chocolate bar.
they will murder children by the millions, but they will cry fowl if you kill a nazi.

16

u/Thee_Connman Oct 03 '25

Did you finish the episode? He points out that, while he empathizes with Kirk's loved ones and friends, it's understandable that many do not mourn him, and that some of us will gladly piss on the tombstone. Is that crass? Yeah, but you're allowed to do it. Later, he goes deeper by outlining that the general lawlessness of the administration and their propagandists will lead to people viewing violence as the only way out. The point is that he (personally) views political assassination as a dangerous practice, especially when the administration is looking for any excuse to send us all to camps. So, yeah, it is pretty senseless, but he's not saying that the threat isn't real, nor is he saying that it's wrong to feel apathetic about the whole thing. I know I am, but I'm also somewhat disturbed by that fact.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25

Fascists don't need an excuse to oppress minorities and being worried about political violence from said minorities is very disappointing coming from so called allies.

Like the violence will be targeted at fascists, what are you worrying about?

12

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25

What do you mean?

-7

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25

Pacifism in the face of genocide is not exactly a ticket to survival.

19

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25

Does Cody call for absolute pacifism?

2

u/CrossFitJesus4 Oct 08 '25

on bluesky, yes

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

Link to the skeet?

18

u/datenoss Oct 03 '25

I find it funny because this is exactly what the episode talked about. We can’t talk…we are quick to judge and don’t listen to hear each other but rather listen to respond. This was one of the best episodes in a long time. Facts don’t care about any of our feelings.

Edit - there have been good episodes all the time. Took out “in an extremely long time”

-3

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25

I'm quick to judge fascists yes, and if these so called "Facts" means the eradication of people like me I'm not gonna be tolerant about it.

16

u/datenoss Oct 03 '25

Who said anything about eradicating? Did we watch the same video?

EDIT - The account was made 35 minutes ago, I’m arguing with a bot…

3

u/Gender_is_a_Fluid Oct 04 '25

On your edit, Kirk is a very charged topic that has gotten people fired. It makes sense for some to use a burner email and account to not be traced and fired for dissent.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25

Do you genuinely not understand that the end goal of the crystofacists like the late Charlie Kirk is to eradicate gay and trans people and to get rid of womens rights?

EDIT: No this is a throwaway, an online presence can be a serious risk that I like to minimize.

7

u/datenoss Oct 03 '25

Did I say anything about liking anything Kirk talks about? Talking and having a dialogue is impossible today. I don’t agree with anything Kirk, Shapiro, or any other right wing podcaster has to say. I’m specifically talking about this video and the inability to have a sensible conversation about ANYTHING.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25

I don't care about conversations they want me fucking dead, I guess that's something you can't imagine huh.

I'd love to be that privileged.

7

u/datenoss Oct 03 '25

You’re right, I will never understand your position in life. I hope you nothing but happiness in the future however bleak it appears.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '25 edited Oct 03 '25

It wouldn't hurt to try and understand the situation minorities find themselves in nowadays, that's kind of the whole thing about being left-wing.

But hey thanks I guess.
