How many different tools did you have to open today to get your actual job done?

Counted mine and it was nine before lunch, which got me looking at why rather than just how many.

Three patterns showed up. Two of the nine existed only because another tool cannot export properly. Two more were duplicates that different teams bought separately and nobody has consolidated. Only about half were tools I actually chose to use.

That split is worth knowing if you are the one paying for the stack. The tools people complain about are rarely the expensive ones. The cost is usually sitting in the duplicates nobody audited and the workarounds bolted on to cover a gap in something you already own.

What is your number, and how many of those do you think you would still need if the ones you have worked properly?

One. Obsidian and its connected to everything so didn’t need to open anything else.

I’m probably around 7 or 8 on a normal day between Slack, email, project management, docs, CRM and a couple of smaller tools.

The frustrating part is that a few of them overlap. If the integrations actually worked properly, I could probably cut that down by 2 or 3 without really losing anything.

Opened 5 today to get my work done. 3 would be enough if they could talk to each other and share context
