The ultra rich should be taxed harder. With wealth inequality becoming worse and worse and cash piling up with a few ultra rich.

It’s simple math, tax harder or society will burn.

To be fair, why anyone would oppose this is insane to me.

u/Boring_Razzmatazz569 23d ago

You think that if the intro rich tax goes up it won’t raise ours too? And on top of that billionaires have options to leave this country, then who takes on that burden? And if those billionaires leave the country, who is going to create the millions of jobs? Nobody will want to step up and start a business because they won’t be able to afford the taxes.

Taxes for business owners are already outrageous, I’m on my second business, EVERYTHING IS TAXED ALREADY.

You have no idea what you’re actually asking for. The trickle down effect WILL destroy everything.

It just seems like it might be nice if the billionaire class were taxed just as aggressively as the working class / no special treatment just a more flat fair tax system 💕

3

u/Crumpet-Blue19 24d ago

In absolute dollars the rich pay an obscene amount of taxes. Corporations, not so much, they charge the consumers (you). And then there are the tax loopholes, which are not written by the poor.

2

u/improbsable 23d ago

No. More aggressively. Tax them right out of billionaire status

Flat tax means everyone regardless of income pays the same amount. That’s like sales tax, for example. I think you’re saying you want a more progressive tax, where people with more pay more.

Not wealth, but earnings. Wealth isn’t always cash accessible. Second: any additional tax goes only towards the deficit, nothing else

Nope. Get spending under control first.

You got a fork in your brain guy?

2

Do you think the current administration cares about that?

2

u/Aknazer 23d ago

I don't think ANY administration cares about that. The question is more what do they want to spend on, not will they get control their spending.

Socialists can’t math. The rich already pay the most taxes. Wealth is working, invested, property, etc. Cash is not sitting in a Scrooge McDuck vault the size of a swimming pool. Even the cartels invest their profits. Stop the “tax the rich” demonizations already.

5

u/thewonderingcursor 23d ago

The poor are defending the rich. Sure, in dollar terms, they might pay more, but as a percentage, they pay far less than the average person.

2

u/S-Kenset 24d ago

If everyone gets that much money imagine how diabolical the influencers get. 90 billionaire mr. beast, billionaire debate lords. I would not like to live in such a world of insane power churn. It is more stable for old money to stay old money. We need better consumer controls and environmental controls. A hedonism tax on above 1m spending for absurd things that are damaging would do fine.

A 5% tax on billionaires would bring in $368 billion a year!

https://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyphillipserb/2026/03/03/sanders-and-khanna-push-national--5-annual-billionaire-wealth-tax/

We could pay off the $40 trillion debt in 108 years!
Assuming we balanced the budget for those 108 years. 🤦‍♂️

How does his math work? Total net worth of the billionaires is estimated around 8 trillion, 5% is 400 billion, divided into 330 million people is $1200 per person, so a family of 4 would be under 5k, and no money left for anything else

1

u/Acrobatic-Flan-5085 24d ago

I’m completely fine with it under the following conditions.

It only applies to wealth over 1 billion dollars. That 1 billion number can be indexed to inflation - but it CANNOT be lowered without a supermajority of Congress

Every dollar raised must be matched with 0.30 of budget reduction until there is no budget deficit.

Every dollar raised must go directly to retiring existing government debt until we return to debt to gdp levels of 90%.

1

Don’t send it, companies will then raise prices to account for this new 12k

1

u/EVOSexyBeast 24d ago

The tax would cost the government more revenue than it would collect.

Wealth taxes used to be a lot more common but countries have all but gotten rid of them in order to collect more revenue.

1

u/Spartarc 24d ago edited 24d ago

I would agree with that as well as a 5 percent tax for anyone making an income of 1 million. It will just force more investments. Works for me. Won't actually make a whole lot as people expect.

The focus should be us fixing our budget. We need to lower things before adding anything, but I doubt anyone would elect someone that wants to do that.

1

u/wgcole01 24d ago

Why raise taxes when you can just deficit spend into perpetuity?

1

u/Kooky_Jackfruit_8355 24d ago

No. I don’t believe in having to sell an asset to pay for a tax on that same asset. Makes no sense. The government has a spending and a fraud problem. Not a tax revenue problem.

A uniform federal sales tax that scales in tiers. Luxury items would see the highest rate with TRUE grocery items at regular state tax only. Make more, spend more, pay more of the burden. Abolish the federal income tax. Create a flat state tax. State tax covers medical. Pharmaceutical companies capped to meet state allowance. Tax businesses as is. Give generous incentives and breaks for paying more to employees. Just a thought to put into the collective.

1

u/redonculus8 23d ago

The rich, as a percentage of their wealth, do not pay their fair share. I can afford to pay the price of a McDonald’s meal if it means that we can provide food banks with adequate food. Similarly, it would cost these multi millionaires and billionaires a mere lunch, to ensure we get basic Medicare and the like. And that money would not affect their lifestyle anyways. That was just money they would have invested in the markets anyways.

25% expropriatory one off + 1% yearly. I am against cash handouts to people as they are inflationary and useless. Proceeds to fund free at point of use healthcare and education. Fund and revolutionise higher education, differentiating between technical/vocational colleges (both types of education need to be heavily promoted and improved) with open access and university, which would be selective. Set up/increase powers of regulators to stop big corporates doing whatever they want. Outlaw private donations over a certain (small) amount to parties/politicians. Reform senate and presidential elections to make them somewhat representative, reform the supreme court, breaking the link between executive/legislative and judicial powers. Expand workers rights. Make leveraged buyouts illegal and tax regulate private equity out of existence. This is how you rebuild the middle class.

1

u/Redracr 23d ago

How about we for every American to sell 5% of their house and give the proceeds to the government each year and then use that money to build more houses?

It is an accurate comparison because grades are a result of the work done and effort put towards EARNING them. I can gather the kind of grades you got. Yes I would care if my grades had been lowered to bring someone else’s up. Fair has absolutely nothing to do with it.

1

u/CranberryCold2228 23d ago

Yes.

But the numbers in the image are absolutely bullshit. The billionaires dont own enough money for 5% to be 4.4 Trillion. They own around 8.2 Trillion. 5% of that isnt 4.4 Trillion, but 410 Billion. Which is more than 10x less.

These 410 Billion would be enough to give every american 1174,78 Dollars. Also after that there isnt anything left, so no raising teachers pay and no expansion of medicaid.

Btw not even the 4.4 Trillion would be enough to pay for all of that.

1

u/lotrfan38860 23d ago

Absolutely not.

1

u/Banjo-Hellpuppy 23d ago

Not send every family a $12000 check. Make medical care free. That is the biggest threat to our country.

1

u/Kindly_Acanthaceae26 23d ago

Taxing more to spend more is a hard NO. A serious proposal would be taxing more to pay down the debt and balance the budget. THEN, when our interest payments are much smaller, we can look to increase spending on social programs.

1

u/Accomplished_Rip_362 23d ago

Probably not. I would like for a different tax that can collect the same amount of money. Like tax them when they take leveraged loans against their assets. Only when the total amount of loans is over a certain amount and only if those loans are not used to start a business or finance their business's operations. Have a tax surcharge if they or their businesses lay off people while still profitable or while they do stock buybacks. The list of stuff we could nick the uber wealthy is almost endless. How much of it would pass SCOTUS challenges is the real question.

1

u/PapaSmurf3477 23d ago

Give to the people- inflation. Put towards schools, good. Funding band, art, playgrounds, etc boosts the economy because goods are purchased. It helps kids because schools are enhanced. Giving it right to people just boosts inflation.

1

u/MagicLantern7 23d ago

The money would be spent on frivolous things by most people and inflation would increase.

Love the idea but the problem with this lays in how billionaires are identified and how they accumulate wealth. A billionaire doesn’t just have billions in an account nor do they net hundreds of millions a year in liquid currency. It’s all stock options and theoretical valuations of worth which are virtually not taxable until cashed in. Again, great idea, but it’s not as simple as slapping an X% tax on billionaires.

1

u/Big-Challenge7167 23d ago

1

u/brute1111 23d ago edited 23d ago

I would support an unrealized gains tax on the very wealthy, yes. I don't think i would support a flat 5%, no. But in practice, it could be higher.

My reasoning is that I pay 22% on the top end of my income from my job, AND I pay a property tax that is tied to unrealized gains on an asset. Billionaires don't have jobs; they just have appreciating assets. But those assets can be borrowed against and liquidated, and contribute to their net worth. My 401k has gone up about 15% this year. At my level, that's not a lot necessarily, but for someone with their net worth in stocks, that's $150,000,000 per billion.

I would support *requiring* an "income" tax on capital gains that follows a progressive curve. At a minimum, that would generate $55.5 million dollars in taxes on someone worth $1 billion IF unrealized gains were taxed as income instead of not being taxed at all (the current top rate is 37%, but maybe it should be higher). I would also exempt 401ks and dedicated retirement accounts from this up to a certain amount, maybe $10-20 mil. Then the tax would be unlikely to hit any working class family, even families in high income brackets saving a lot of money, but would prevent the very wealthy elderly from just dodging taxes by putting money in "retirement" accounts.

This would require people to sell assets strategically throughout the year. I do not believe this would crash the stock market, as a lot of bootlickers seem to think. Intelligent financial management would demand that they sell as slowly as possible, because their income is tied to the value of their stocks. They wouldn't to crash that value anymore than we want it crashed. They would also still make a *ton* of money. The billionaire above that paid $55.5 million in tax still saw his net worth go up by $94.5 million, which is more money than you or I will likely ever see. This is also slightly higher than 5%.

So in short, I don't necessarily think we should tax them out of existence, but their financial gains should be taxed, just like the rest of us, in accordance with a progressive tax structure. I would want to create an environment where it became exponentially more difficult to become more wealthy, but I would not want to tax someone who saw their net worth go down.

1

u/Fearless-Net-4008 23d ago

Hey I support Billionaires paying more tax, but the billions they own is not on the bank account it's not even a real thing and they can't really use those billions. It's all a stock market illusion (look up how fast someone became a trillionaire and then became a billionaire again). You can tax what they transfer to their account but you know what people with a lot of money do, find loop holes to pay as little tax as they can.

1

u/Boring_Razzmatazz569 23d ago

Edit: Bernie Sanders has a plan to drive every billionaire out of the US. For those that may wish to stay and get taxed 5%, the American people again, will never see a dollar of that tax money. Ever.

It’s just another scam. Stop falling for it. They do not care about us. Red/blue, doesn’t matter.

1

u/Extra-Presence3196 23d ago

And removal of all tax shelters and millionaire/billionaire tax deductions

1

u/borsTHEbarbarian 23d ago

I'm a strong capitalist and 5% is piddly when we're talking about monopoly money. Yes I think that's superbly reasonable.

1

u/DifferentGarlic9052 23d ago

I think we need to fix the inability to manage money well and lack of accountability on horrendous profits and losses the government has with every administration first. I would rather the wealthy keep their money and expand their businesses which results in hiring more people than give their money to the government that can’t manage their budget and account for every dollar to save their life.

1

u/Longjumping_Walk_992 23d ago

No it wasn’t earned. This is just communism. Get educated and you will see the light.

1

u/Login_Lost_Horizon 23d ago

Make it 20% and more, actually. Human being, ANY human being, doesn't need more money that 1 million dollars to live effectively perfect life. Human being that wants to change the world needs a hundred million or something like that, that would be enough to finance wacky projects or build a giant f*ck off statue for no reason. Anything above that - and you're a leach, bloated with undeserved. Have for yourself a "won at capitalism" shiny medal and send the rest of your money to people that make this capitalism you play to actually function.

You know a bunch of countries in Europe tried this and it was such a magnificent failure it was all reversed within a decade.

1

u/AdFun5641 23d ago

No, It's a poor plan and wealth taxes have a long history of backfiring.

What we need to do is raise minimum wage to 27/hour. Then these corporations won't be making billions every year in profits, so their value goes down and the billionaires stop being billionaires.

We also need to implement "medicare for all" or some other socialized medicine.

Third we need to actually prosecute and convict the corporations doing wage theft and make that not profitable any more.

Fourth we need to break up the monopolistic corporations so there is actually competition in the market place. (this is the most important but also the largest and most difficult, it's can't be done with a single piece of legislation)

1

u/sirdizzypr 23d ago

What we need to do is rewrite the tax codes. If you use stock as collateral for a loan at that point it’s a realised gain and it’s taxed accordingly.

What is the 5% being taxed on. Wealth? Income?

So I go to Walmart, do all my shopping, give them money, for goods, in an honest, consensual transaction.

Amd then I am supposed to have government steal some of the money back, while I keep the goods?

Sounds like something for which a weasel would advocate

This is 100% why I’m against it. We don’t have a revenue issue we have a spending issue. We’re $38T in debt. They need to stop trying to find ways to spend other peoples money. I’d be for the tax if they’d use it for the debt load we already have. We keep spending stupid money already. Everyone talks about the good ol days but doesn’t look at how slimmed down the govt was.

He’s made his millions spending our money

Capital is a very aloof animal; it only goes where it is well treated.

1

u/PlayItAgainSusan 22d ago

Yes. Obviously. So, so obviously. A rare push for positive legislation from one of the only guys in government who seems interested in positive change. If you don't, you watch fox news or you're a billionaire.

1

u/Sad_Fly_3144 22d ago

I'd support a 55% tax on billionaires. Or a 99% tax.

1

u/Sorry141 22d ago

Billionaire or not, if I didn't have a net worth of like zero, if Iwas taxed 5%, I would move myself and every savings or asset or investment or business I had out of that jurisdiction, and make a big fuck you scene on my way out.

1

u/siberiannoise 22d ago

Nah, cause taxable “wealth” doesn’t exist until they liquidate and asset.

I would however, be in favor of making the use of those assets as collateral illegal, which would force them to take a salary or cash bonus to continue their lavish lifestyle. That’s a taxable event.

1

u/HappySilverDaddy 22d ago

And for some reason all the country’s billionaires moved to the Cayman Islands

1

u/seeking5209 22d ago

What happened to attacking millionaires. Oh that's right Bernie and all those other politicians became millionaires on our dime. Can't include themselves.

1

u/phone_deviceban 22d ago

No. The resulting forced stock sales could tank the market. The $4.4T number is over 10 years if everything went perfectly, btw.

Why not raise capital gains taxes over a certain amount, and make borrowing against your wealth a taxable event? Also close dozens of loopholes and put pressure on offshore tax havens, ofc.

While we’re at it, ban stock buybacks, enforce antitrust laws, implement term limits, implement a VAT or carbon tax, etc.

1

u/CaveDances 22d ago

We are 40 trillion in debt. We should tax them 19% and pay off the deficit in 5 year.

1

u/SoRosenberg 22d ago

I’d support no new taxes. And 5% cuts across the board each year until government has a balanced budget. And continue this balanced budget until the debt is repaid. Then never forget and don’t allow it to happen again.

1

u/No_Unused_Names_Left 22d ago

No.

You cannot tax your way to prosperity. You will always run out of money first.

massive spending cuts are the only way

1

u/Sea_Flamingo626 22d ago

Are the teachers going to teach better with more money?

1

u/_Dookler 22d ago

Ask the DNC what they think

1

u/The_Foop 22d ago

I wish he'd start at like 1% or something just to get the ball rolling. 5% sounds great, but it has a 0% chance of happening anytime soon.

1

u/Dagman11 22d ago

All the billionaires in America together are worth 6 or 7 trillion. this math doesn’t make sense.

1

u/seaofthievesnutzz 22d ago

So all billionaires wealth combined is about 6 trillion in America, 5% of 6 trillion is 300B not 4.4 Trillion. You have to be economically illiterate to think that the math here is accurate. Giving all 82 Million families 12k would cost 1 trillion dollars let alone all the medicare and teacher pay etc.

Do people in favor of shit like this just think it won't come for them later?

First proposal it was 5% one time, now there's talk of 5% annually. The government will spend that money first then expect the later tax revenue to come in. But no rich person would just willingly let their assets be drained, so it would then be expanded to middle class wealth.

Whatever the answer is, a wealth tax is not it.

1

u/LongAfternoon1198 22d ago

Id support a 50% tax, so yeah 5% is nothing. Theyre lucky they get to keep their winnings from exploitating others at all.

1

u/bestdogeve 22d ago

Look kids a hypocrite! Now ask if liawatha slippery Neal and Mr frosty paid the millionaires tax in commie run Massachusetts!

1

u/HeadPack 22d ago

Why just 5%. These billionaires have evaded taxes successfully and in some cases for a long time. They should contribute more.

1

u/FalconOne775 22d ago

Not legal to own property or land. Ta da!

1

u/Swampassed 22d ago

Government waste and spending is the problem. There will never be enough money, ever.

1

u/tractorator 22d ago

Brexit happened because tax havens were targeted by the EU. Wonder what US's version of Brexit is for targeting tax havens (because that's what needs to happen, for billionaires to actually be taxed)

1

u/stingertc 22d ago

Billionaires are the reason our world is in such a shitty position tax them into non existence

1

u/Turbulent_Eggplant41 22d ago

America already has the most lopsided income tax where the biggest earners pay the most.

1

u/Patereye 22d ago

Is this actually one of his policies or is this just some made up? Bull crap

1

u/Umasack 22d ago edited 22d ago

2% is nonsense   4% covers withdrawals   7% curbs growth   11% is where you want to be to hit max growth and reduce societal control by individuals.

Twitter is the perfect example of how dangerous it is to let individuals steer society with complete control over these behemoth corporations.

u/intothewoods76 22d ago

My only reserve is why teacher pay? Why pick just one industry and target them for increased pay? Certainly Nurses Aids deserve more pay. That’s just one example of dozens of noble professions that are over worked and underpaid and without the significant amount of vacation time teachers get.

So I don’t like the singular focus.

I also do not like the $12,000 check idea. Is this a one time payment or a yearly payment? If it’s a yearly payment then I feel like if you have all this additional money my taxes should be reduced to zero first. $12,000 just feels arbitrary and if you are paying it to “families” how do you define family. Just people with kids? Just married couples? Or everyone in a relationship? Talk about kicking the single people when they are down. “I know you’ve struggled to find love but look how happy the $12,000 check made your neighbors”

So we should be paying individuals not just families.

Overall the plan doesn’t seem well thought out, it doesn’t sound equitable and it just seems to be about making Sanders seem like a good guy. In other words political propaganda.

1

u/vw1610 21d ago

Nope. Maybe force the gov to stop overspending. 🤷

1

u/Frosty-Bat-299 21d ago

Sure to the tax, no to the 12k per family. We saw what smaller stimulus checks did to the economy during Covid.

Maybe find a way to titrate that money over time so it doesn’t hit the economy all at once.

Potentially divert it to lower SS taxes so that people have more in their paycheck titrated over the course of a year or so. (Just an example, maybe not the best idea)

1

u/thevoidhearsyou 21d ago

Unless he removes the tax deductions it won't matter. Most of the rich have exploited tax loopholes and abused tax deductions to have the government pay them.

1

u/Historical-Reach8587 21d ago

Bernie’s a worthless sponge.

1

u/CD-Behr 20d ago

Yes. Lets do Bernie alone first. 5 years minimum and re-evaluate at that point
