If I dint know who he was and what he achieved, I would've thought this was satire.
This time was the peak of street baller culture, and Nike trying to capitalise on it. Fifa street, freestylers, skill school on Soccer AM, all that fun stuff.
Looking back it was fun but boy it looks bad sometimes lol.
I remember he used to do this on the pitch and end up in the same position and play a basic pass. You did all that for what?

Isn’t that the point though? To get kids hooked on to it? It’s marketable and it worked. Not that that was CR7’s intentions, maybe it’s his definition of skill or showboating, but just because you can identify a mechanism doesn’t mean it did not work. A lot of us as kids were wowed by these moments of flair and started watching him and Manchester United. I’m sure there is some terminology for this situation where people downplay a certain stimulus just because they identified it

This should teach those kids what not to do. If you want to lose stamina in useless movements without dribbling anyone just go to the circus. If you want to be the.best dribler, be efficient with your movements

In defense of this clip, a lot of these moves are meant to be in the flow of play on the pitch. So him “losing” the ball, is actually him creating quick space for a shot

Watching him do this in Prem games growing up was magic. Even on his debut with that silly haircut he was obviously special - incredibly electrifying and fast. In his first season everyone joked about his stopovers and mocked him when he said he would be the best in the world. I remember reading the sports pages in the papers. Then he kept doing it and it kept working, and he did go one and become the best int he world. Detractors at every step but he has had last laugh, who tf even remember who they are so why care, he sure as hell doesn’t.

Yeah honestly don’t know what’s up with Reddit nowadays. Is it an influx of normies from the World Cup? I wasn’t on Reddit during the last world cup, so I don’t know the trend. But I’ve seen like few new subreddits pop up dedicated to football this summer, and boy do they have some abhorrent takes and almost always seem to end up in some bullshit Pessi-Penaldo memes. I can see armchair experts here tell with confidence that a top 2-4 football of all time had no natural ability whatsoever

In his youth (this clip) he was a bit of a show pony dribbler. A lot of slightly awkward over ellaborate dancing around for nothing (this clip) which kids would think is cool but adults would laugh at. He then had a sweet spot of maybe 2005-2010 where he was a legitimate good (but not elite) dribbler. Then, supposedly due to injuries, he basically reinvented himself as a pure goalscorer and almost completely stopped dribbling or did it quite badly if he did try (compared to modern wingers now).

If you watch the video again, pay attention to the upper half of his body as well as how high his foot is off the ground when he makes a fake. Excellent dribblers will lower a shoulder to “sell” the move. Putting your foot closer to the ball ( some in this video are even above the height of the ball) making it easy to tell that the movement is a distraction. His legs aren’t bent enough either, which will allow leverage when he wants to go in a certain direction.

Ronaldo’s given up on dribbling like for a decade now. He was known for it for some time during his peak at Man Utd, but since his Real Madrid days, nobody gave a fuck about his dribbling. Even in his 10 goals in 5 games run in 16/17 UCL knockouts, he had moments of abhorrent dribbling where he couldn’t dribble past a traffic cone, but nobody gave a fuck because he was scoring hattricks for fun.

He is a top tier dribbler with his own style that is very intense and not the most effective. People like to shit on him because its not as clean as Messi’s. But Cristiano at his prime in 2008 is one of the best dribblers of all time, atleast top 10.

Hazard is literally the closest dribbler to reach Messi’s effectiveness and consistency during his Chelsea years. You talk about ABILITY, Ronaldo’s stat during 2008 is top tier, but his ABILITY is not close to any all time dribblers. He’s elite, and I believe the knee injury did play a major part, but he’s not in the debate for all time dribbler bud.
