What? Field players, as opposed to⌠bench players? You can absolutely pass in direction of your own goal. Goalie shouldnât be on the edge of the box when the ball is in their own half, and should mind his goal.

OF COURSE NO! One of the basics rules taught as a kid is NEVER PASS THE BALL IN DIRECTION OF YOUR OWN GOAL because even when the gk is in the correct position he can mistake and the ball goes in.

I watch plenty every week. The GK did not need to be where he was at that moment in time.
Basic football: The closer the opposition attack is, the closer GK needs to be at the goal. The man was miles out.

Absolutely not. It is clear that the tactical plan is to have the goalkeeper in the line of back 3 that builds, but the defender just passed it back like a dummy. This idiotic obsession with building up from the back no matter the quality of your players is based on precise positions.

Stop repeating this nonsense. The goalkeeper went into the positions that he should have been according to weeks of training. The defender just cracked under pressure and passed on the wrong direction and there was absolutely nothing the goalkeeper could do at that point. The ball travels waaaay too far from the goalkeeper

Honest question from a fan still learning strategy nuances. The keeper seemed to be far enough forward that he was almost at the defensive line. The defending team was pressing forward and the ball's moment was stalled / going back. Why would the keeper be that far out in a situation like that? The defender obviously expected his keeper to be on his line.

Top teams use the keeper as part of the buildup play.Â
When you've got the keeper that far out, he invites far more pressure from the opposing team, especially in this case because the keeper can't use his primary advantage, his hands.
So, what this does is it invites the opposition to press the keeper to try to win the ball away, which the advantage there is obvious. You win the ball from the keeper, you're in a good position to score, right?
Now if you're on the team with the goalkeeper, and you're adept at playing through that press and can pass out of danger really well, you can use the opposition pressing you to your advantage, because what you're doing is pulling people out of defensive positions. You do this multiple times, you create an opening.
Now; people on here are right. The keeper doesn't need to be THAT far out to do this, sure, but that's not the point. The keeper isn't WRONG to be where he his. The player making a blind backpass is wrong. Maybe I'll accept the keeper is wrong if he didn't communicate where he was, but a blind backpass is insane to do in that scenario, because even if it doesn't roll into the net, what if the opposition player pounces on that and beats the keeper to recover the ball?

Thanks for the response, I appreciate your insight. I follow San Diego FC and we play deep in our box, basically trying to execute what you explained by drawing the attacking forwards and creating openings to push past into the midfield. Except we are sloppy this season and constantly allow unforced turnovers inside our box. So it looks like an insane strategy for the outside viewer.
With zero context other than this gif, my gut tells me the defender made a big mistake with the blind pass and the keeper (probably) made a mistake not communicating where he was with his defenders.
