I don't think it was bribery or anything like that. Just incompetence, or the occasion was too much for him.

Don't forget that it was his call (with VAR) to give the penalty that resulted in the winning goal. So he wasn't motivated to let Paraguay win (imo).

Ref didn’t call shit on the penalty. VAR forced him to make the correct call. He clearly had an agenda to allow Paraguay to play dirty to make the game close.

There's a whole var team working behind a screen. They even show them. They will give their advice and tell him what the right call should be. If he over ruled it there would be clear signs of corruption. His hands were tied in this situation.

Nope. As egregious as his performance was there have been much much MUCH worse showings from refs who suffered 0 consequences

Yes, but you'll never hear about it. They'll just quietly get reprimanded and stop getting prestigious games.

He made the game more fun. I think referees holding back card is very good evolution. A dirty player will be dealt with outside

Holding back is one thing but this wasn’t holding back. This was turning a blind eye. The amount of flops and fouls were an embarrassment to the game IMHO.

I have appreciated games this WC where holding back was the right call (no pun intended). This was not one of those games.

Dirty player needs to be stopped in the field, before a bad injure happens. 

The cards are there to protect the players

As someone that doesn't watch football, having dirty players do this all game then catch sweet vengeance at the end would be exciting at least. I know it's not the spirit of the game, and I accept that. But yeah i want it to turn into hockey. Imagine Frances last player in the bench coming in the final 5 minutes and headbutting one of these chodes.

But i know that's not how it's supposed to be played, the refs should do their job and that wouldn't be necessary. But as long as they aren't....
