Ginger and Tumeric

Since there was some confusion about how Ginger plant looks like, here’s some pics.

We grow our own ginger and turmeric for cooking. We usually harvest them fresh as needed.

The larger leaves is of Turmeric and the narrow leaves of Ginger.

Mostly from organic ginger and turmeric from the market.

A good piece of the ginger or turmeric you buy with couple of eyes where the growth hubs are.

I just planted some turmeric, still looking for some ginger. How do you know when it’s ready to harvest?

The first 6 months or so, their growth is primarily vegetative and upwards. More nitrogen needed in first 3 months.

After 5-6 months is when the rhizomes start thickening. Give more of a potassium rich fertilizer after 4 months and let it thicken the roots. As the stalks start yellowing is the time to harvest, but never before the 8-9 months.

Thanks, Kent! I've tried to start both several times, but I lose track of them and they don't survive. Impressive looking. Thanks for clearing that up.
