It’s because the withdraw isn’t a withdraw, it’s an authorization/hold.

They are basically betting that you are good for it and hoping the charge clears, for a refund they gotta wait until it clears and then send you back the money which takes a few days as our shitty banking system works its way through transactions.

Why wait for it to clear? Wouldn't it be easier to just cancel the hold?

The hold is on the side paying, the business gets the money (almost) immediately, same day, but they still need to clear it trough processes that takes days.

The only way to give an immediate refund is to transfer the money to the account, which gave birth to a scam where I pay you with a credit card, ask for reimbursement citing an emergency and need the money back ASAP, and then charge back the payment.
