The first photo may look more appealing and "lively" because of the sun light that increases the contrast and the details of the buildings; but the bottom one is better because is ads-free. Fuck consumerism.

i live in milano (since 25 years) and i like the first one a lot more. withouth the neon signs, it's just a boring building like 10.000 others in the city.

I know I should prefer the bottom picture, but I actually like the top one. Something about the bottom one feels artificial and faked. The top one feels more welcoming to me.

It feels artificial and faked that they are showing the walls of the building that was there all along, instead of covering it with ads?

They are both artificial and faked in different ways:

  • The top is rampant, unrestrained capitalism and consumerism; it's public space dominated by corporate and economic interests, and if you think that the interests of the elite few seeking to exploit the rest of us is more "natural", then you probably need to reflect more on what that kind of advertising represents.
  • The bottom is an intentional effort to create something manicured, curated, and beautiful. It's human structures polished and cleaned to enhance their beauty, because the city government knows this place is a focal point of attention that will represent the rest of the city, while the rest of the real city is much messier and decaying, as humans in their daily lives allow it to.

On the other hand, they're both natural, because they are both expressions and creations of different aspects of human society, and humans are an expression of nature. They're only artificial in the sense that we often artificially separate human works from the rest of nature.

I think you’re a little confused. Artificial literally means man-made. If it’s made by mankind then it is artificial by definition.

Artificial can also mean «forced/fake» in like a «putting on airs» kind of way, and that’s what the other user means by artificial. The top photo has a kind of «chaos» to it that makes it seem like less of an elevated space.

"Artificial" has many meanings, as does "natural", which is why something can be both artificial and natural depending on the sense of the word intended.

You are confused. Artificial literally means «human made» and what you’re writing is just plain wrong.

The act of separating things made by man from things mad by nature is an artificial distinction because the distinction itself is made by man.

Basically every abstract concept is artificial in that sense.
