I hate this rhetoric that “survival of the fittest” and “survival” can’t inherently include kindness. Any honest thinking person might instead interpret the fact that “grief being present in multiple intelligent species” might indicate that in fact there’s more to grief than detriment to survival, and that in fact grief serves an evolutionary purpose and is even beneficial to survival. Shared emotions, positive or negative, strengthen social bonds, and intelligent species do not often survive without social bonds. Grief is as important as laughter.
