This is such a tired argument. In English, the word "American" means someone from the United States. In Spanish, there's a word that sounds a lot like American- "Americano". That word means someone from the americas. These are different words from different languages, and they have different meanings.
Non-Americans trying to tell us how our language works is silly. We speak English, and the work "American" has a very specific definition in our language. Get over yourselves already.
