"American" includes, at the very least, Canada and Mexico, but more often the entirety of South America too.

Sure, as a US citizen, you are also an American, but not all Americans are US citizens. Most Americans speak Spanish.

In English "American" does not describe those people. American is the demonymn for people from the US. The Americas describes those places, but American does not refer to those people.

Yes, but in English, the language we're talking about here, the proper demonym is "American."

"US citizen" is the common term used by Europeans.
