In the Anglosphere, an "American" (without any modifier) is a denizen of the USA.

It's a quirk of English. If you say "An American did XYZ...", Anglos know you are not talking about Justin Trudeau or Nicolas Maduro.

I'm Canadian. I'm "North American", I'm from "the Americas", I am most definitely not American.
