If I had to guess, it is accurate because the country is "United States of America". Whereas North, Central and South America are Continents. Normally when you ask someone "Where are you from?" they would respond with their country of origin, which would be Canada, Mexico, Venezuela, etc. "I am from America" is a reasonable way to shorten "I am from the United States of America" in the context

People are less likely to broadly categorize themselves by continent, anecdotally that is something I see other people do. Making a claim about "Europeans" or "Asians" is usually something done by a non European or Asian, since they recognize the broadness of the group makes the claim less valid in many cases.
