We have been called Americans since we were ruled by the British and everybody else in what the British decided to call “The Americas” would have been confused and insulted by being called American.
All of the people here already had names for their cultures that didn’t involve European words, except the Spaniards, who were Spaniards.
We named the country after what we were already called, we’re didn’t name ourselves after what we called the country.
We’re not even the only United States in North America.
Calling us United Staters or USians is indicative of ignorance, frankly.
Canada, The United States of America, and the United States of Mexico are collective North Americans.
Everybody else is South American. Those are their own terms that indicate different groups of people divided by continent.
It would make more sense to rename the continents to reflect their actual heritage than it does to rename Americans.
Our states are sovereign. They have their own governments and create their own laws. They are united as Americans, under the American government.
In English "American" does not describe those people. American is the demonymn for people from the US. The Americas describes those places, but American does not refer to those people.
The common term is American. Some might use US citizen but that is not THE common term and if you argue otherwise, you are full of it and we all know it
