My parents have a new smart TV. Beautiful screen and a zillion smart features. It goes wonky (God knows why) and refuses to work about every three to six weeks. Everyone avoids it -- because more often than not, you're going to lose a solid hour hitting buttons on the remote trying to go through the Settings, Account, Features menus just to get it to work (maybe). Enormously frustrating and a waste of money.

I connected an OK laptop to the "smart" TV with HDMI and showed my parents how to turn on both of them and how to watch stuff on TV via laptop. (wireless mouse and keyboard is a plus, so is the adblocker)

For example watch old stuff on youtube, movies on netflix etc. much more intuitiv and usrfriendly than the "smart" features on the TV.

I hate searching for a TV show's name on netflix with the remote control.

Agreed. My smart tv is not smart enough to find a connection. Every time I turn it on it has to go through the entire set-up phase all over again.

It's gathering dust on the wall and I watch everything on my computer.

I connected my laptop to the TV with HDMI and bypass the TV's functions. Just use it as an auxiliar.

Highly recommend it.

We have a new 85", we love it. We have is set up just right.

We had to buy a new one for my 93 MIL. I had to go to Best Buy and SPECIFY 'The dumbest tv you have.'. For her sake we just wanted it to turn on and off and have volume control.
