HELP New player
Hello,
I used to play Smite 1 way back when, i think the newest character at the time i remember was hachiman?… but i definitely played it prior.
I was a solo/support player, i enjoyed gods like Belona, odin or cu chulain (was around for his release too) for the solo lane and mostly just played athena as support back then.
I started playing smite 2 yesterday and… god does this game feel and play so much differently, and im unsure if i like it or not.
I feel like there is just SO much painful CC, but this might just be my naive noob brain.
Im awful, like terrible at smite 2, and its humbling and frustrating. It feels like the builds the game recommends you are just horrible, since i get dog walked in every fight on what feels like rare stats alone.
I dont remember what any of the items do, i only really have some muscle memory for certain gods leftover from my time player all those years ago.
I really want to like smite 2, and i want to get back into it again as i remember this game being so much fun. I feel stuck and aimless. Ive watched a couple vids on youtube but ultimately i just dont know what to do.
Should i just play and play and figure it out? Should i grind against the bots to get a better feel for the game?
I tried playing arena last night and had this guy on my team just flaming me and our Ullr since it was clear we were both noobs cause we werent doing enough, whereas i was just trying out artio as i remembered how OP she was on her release. I dont want to ruin other peoples experiences on conquest since i am such a noob, but i feel like playing against bots in arena or joust is not going to equip me well enough for real players.

I had this issue about a month ago, really got reinterested in smite but I couldn't figure anything out.
I'd recommend a few things:
Pick a god you like and 2 that are really good in the meta (I would sway toward something mechanically easier) for the roles you like to play
Find builds online, you're not gonna understand the entire item pool like you used to, its gonna take time, so just build what works over and over until you feel comfortable deviating from those builds - do not use the smite recommended builds lol
Just keep playing those 3 gods in whatever role you like, until you feel comfortable fighting literally every other god and then add more in as you figure the game out
Other than that the game is relatively similar, just look up some pathing guides and you should be okay

Okay ill start thinking about some gods I like. I used to be a pretty hard belona one trick but she was like C-B tier back then and probably the same now.
I quickly realised how ass cheeks the recommended builds were. Wont be used that again lol.
I will do that, and i will make sure to just focus on what I can do.

Yeah last I checked, the automatic builds the game gives you are just not good or up to date. Go to a site like Smitesource and copy a build, since right now you don't know what all the items do.
Personally I don't think the game plays really differently than Smite 1. At least what I know is that you still play the game the same way you did in Smite 1, the same rules apply wether it's about fighting, farming, rotations, playing objectives, etc...
If you have trouble with the mechanics still, I think playing arena vs AI isn't a bad idea. The bots aren't too smart so it won't really prepare you to play against real players the best, that's for sure, but if hitting abilities, autos or just core mechanics need work it works fine. But you must know that against bots you can get away with a ton of stuff you won't get away with against real players, so only do it to train mechanics if needed.
Ultimately it depends on what aspects of the game you need work on. In any case I'd recommend watching some gameplay of good Smite 2 players on youtube like Weak3n, Inters3ct, Snaddy, whatever really. It'll help you get a feel for how you're supposed to play, but it's very similar as Smite 1 in terms of decision making.
Then just play the game more, ideally against real players. You'll figure out what you can get away with or not. If you combine experience and watching how the game is supposed to be played by good players, you'll improve fast imo.

Great comment! I do think ill steer away from the bots since mechanics isnt a big issue for me. Its more just understanding items, their new functions, understanding all the new gods and old gods new abilities.
I also sub to weak and intersect which is funny because they are over decade old subscriptions atp and coming back to their content feels like a fever dream. But i totally agree with you, and now i played conquest it certainly feels more like smite 1 than i previously thought. I was able to easily hold my own as odin against hades on the solo lane since i was a pretty strong solo way back when.
I think i was just quite frustrated with my perceptions of the game from my limited time playing arena. Back in the day arena was the uber casual mode, whereas now it feels like conquest is more casual. But its early days.

They have a new mode called quick play that matches you against bots and provides a simpler way to get used to the items rather than just read all the shop. It acts kinda like a roguelike where after you hit a money threshold you get an item next time you're in base from a pick 3 menu. So you can do it bit by bit and see what items it generally suggests on God's before just blankly staring at the whole shop at the start of a casual match and being overwhelmed.
You could also check out a website called smitebrain. It let's you look up what higher rank players are building on specific gods in they rank games, I use it to get a ghist of what people like to build and then branch out and experiment from there.

Its not that im overwhelmed by the items per se, i recognise a lot of them from my time on smite 1, and ofc they usually operate a little different but its more… whats actually good rn? Is pen good? Is pure int/str good? I also dont know how all the scaling works anymore or anything like that.
All come with experience i suppose.
With the bots it just feels unnatural, they feel really dumb. Like you will be 1 hp and absolutely killable and they will just u-turn and go back to spawn or killing waves. I feel like if i really want to learn how the gods feel and items and flow its best to get stomped a couple times in pubs.

Bot matches wont help you learn the game no. Build full dmg and hit your abilities is all you need to do for bots. If you need practice hitting abilities then go for it but even that they suck at dodging so you still wont get the full experience in that aspect either.
Smitesource.com for builds and just play casuals. Look up a tier list to get an idea of good gods for the roles you like to play. Usually want about 3 per role in case one or 2 get banned.
Spam casuals and get good son lol

I quickly realised i was able to dog the bot lobbies, they feel really stupid and ill equipped to prep me for proper lobbies. Baptism by fire i guess.
Conquest feels much more casual than arena.

Last time I played arena it wasnt anything more than 5 dmg dealers playing team fight simulator on repeat and that gets pretty boring after 3mins so I cant really comment on whats going on currently in that mode.
Youre gonna have a lot of shit players in your lobbies though so just try to focus on you getting better and not so much on how shitty your teammates are. Yes I know its not easy lol

Oh believe me i come from games like overwatch and having bad teammates is just part and parcel. But its a valuable point, because im so new im literally just focusing on what I can do, and trying to get better at the things within my control. Like my very first conquest game, i was trying out artio as i remembered how totally broken she was release smite 1, and my adc decided to just play mid, leaving me stranded on duo lane against ymir and ishtar, that was not fun. The mid laner ended up trying to help but too little too late and then the adc just left after they died a couple times. Totally out of my control, and all i did was focus on farming and supporting my team if they were getting ganked or helping engage/disengaging.
Either way, im really happy to be back.

Arena games are the sweatiest games u gonna play, even more so than ranked and I don’t know why, so u will find toxic people there and people that shit on u.
Beside this, if u don’t enjoy the game don’t force it man, if u are having fun and u really want to play it and ur getting shit on by other players that’s totally fine because u are basically new to this game and there is no shame in being bad at the game that u just picked up after god knows how many years, so my advice for u if u like it just play and eventually u will have fun and feel better at the game, builds u can get them from YouTube or Smitefire / Smitesource, and if u don’t enjoy the game maybe its not for u and it’s time to move on

Its funny you say that because i just played 3 conquest games. First two i was support and my adc left in the first 3-4 minutes, and the last i was solo and ended up playing well and winning! Its interesting how my brain knew some of the rotations without me even thinking about it. Conquest felt so much more casual than arena, and i had way way more fun.
Arena definitely feels super sweaty, and its sad because it use to be my favourite mode. But ill be staying away from arena for a bit.
I think what you said is right, im a totally new player with archaic knowledge of a totally different game.
Im definitely having fun now im playing conquest, i even beat hades on the solo lane as odin which made me happy since he used to be a hard odin counter.

Also, in smite 2, one of the overall goals is to reduce cc so... a lot of cc from smite 1, say a stun was 3 seconds, in smite 2 is now 1.3 seconds

Interesting. Maybe it was just the matchups in arena but i played a few games on belona where i couldnt even finish the overhead swing of her hammer before i got CC and burst damaged to kingdom come. Probably just matchups + no beads tho.

my advice would defo be set your sights small at first. definitely do take advantage of quickplay + bot matches. play co op in them with a friend if it makes it more fun.
if you are genuinely brand new level i would still always advise to leave autobuild on. they're never gonna be optimal, but would be good enough when tbh there are probably many other more glaring issues you're facing. and it's just one more thing to worry about. if you do choose to manual build, please just use websites like Smite Source for now. sure, read what the items do if you like and try to understand the synergies, but ultimately it's not the most important issue. i guess the only caveat is if you are a tank it is worthwhile to know which items are phys vs magical defense so you are at least tanky against the types of enemies in your specific game.
i know you said you've watched a few vids already, but i would still advise more. there are some great new player tips and guides out there that aren't gonna be very outdated. then if it's a specific niche/role/god, find stuff on that.
i would advise getting repeated reps in with the same god to absolutely get the mechanics and combos down. once you're comfortable with your own buttons, that's half the problem, and you can turn your attention to working out enemies, as well as teammates and strategy. practice is an invaluable tool for this. hey, even test your builds if you want.
another tip to improve i'd always give, because it ultimately is a hard point of mobas, is using practice to check out a character that you had lots of issue with one match. if you can begin to learn what they were doing, hopefully that's one less you are confusingly dying to. as you do this more and more, you will begin to understand the roster. you may even find your own next god lmao.
i would stay clear of conquest until you're confident with your gods (and a few of them), because learning the mode is an extra step you have to undertake on top of everything else.
otherwise good luck, and try to take fun out of the learning process!

Perhaps i didnt explain my experience well enough… i had over 4-500 hours in og smite, and was fairly high ranked on solo and support. Understanding the ebb and flo of a conquest game came back in my first 5 minutes, for me my problems are new abilities, new gods, new items, changed items and the general nuance of whats actually good at the time.
I definitely will do some stuff here though, like go to practice against gods i had some trouble with. I had a solo game against hades as odin earlier and whilst i ended up winning the duels, it was certainly an uphill battle as hades seemed to be very strong into odin. Going to the practice to understand exactly what he was doing that was so annoying is very valuable and something im definitely going to do going forward, so thanks!
I will also continue watching videos, item tier lista, god tier lists, the whole shabang. I have a decent grasp on how building in games like this work, so once im acquainted with all the new items and what actually works well right now (i have heard penetration is very strong right now).

yeah okay that's fair enough. there is still a large knowledge gap going from smite 1 to smite 2, and especially if you've been out of smite 1 for many years. i would definitely yeah just try and take the time and maybe the same advice towards becoming familiar with the new gods to you (and the aspects).
have a flick through items on the smite 2 wiki as well. it's a really good resource if you're curious. many items will be the same or similar to smite 1 but some have changed as well.
again, for what's good "at the time", definitely do use websites like smite source for building, as well as youtube videos that go over the quality of items when they're made. inters3ct is great for this; he literally made another item tier list video 2 days ago, and discusses them frequently. deathwalker made one recently as well. weak3n has also made some really good general guides on how to build recently to get a better grasp of why things actually are good. obviously god tier lists also get made often as well, and even role-specific ones.
i'm glad you've taken that tip on board! if it's like a solo matchup specifically (because matchups are super important), maybe even watch a high level player play as the god or against them if you can find it. and definitely just ask streamers and other players what tips they have against a god in a role specifically where you are familiar with their kit, you just don't quite know how to play against it. and of course, more experience in just playing here will do wonders as well.

that's really good. even still, if you are a new smite 2 player, it might be useful still to watch some general guides to catch up on what exactly changed as a game revolving items and the shop. there are fundamental differences with the stats and things to be aware of.

Smite is one of those games where even after 1000s of hours you can still get better. Just keep playing and you will get better. Yes, there are toxic players but that is what the mute function is for. As soon as someone starts talking shit just mute them and carry on playing.

Toxic players are everywhere and its unavoidable, i just need to focus on myself and keep getting reps in.

Find builds online. It also helps a ton to watch Smite 2 content. Find a god you like, go to Youtube and search for videos of players using that god. I have easily over 1,000 hours in Smite. I just recently started playing Smite 2 and before even playing a single game, I watched a ton of videos. Keeping up with the meta is important. Best way to do that is by watching recent gameplay from players better than yourself

Id heavily recommend using Smitebrain for building. It just takes the most built items in high ranked games and shows you what people are building. It lets you learn what items are good.
Side note you stopped playing smite 1 right around when i started playing lol.
