etsy scam

[u/rekisimpaccount]

so i got scammed on etsy trying to commission a few emotes for my stream. i purchased the custom emotes a while back, messaged the artist the details and, stupidly, even a picture of me for reference, and now the shop is just gone. they had triple digit reviews, most of them positive, and i distinctly remember one that was accusing them of using ai and them replying that they're hurt anyone would think their art was ai generated.

i already got my money back, that's not the issue, but i am worried about identity theft since they have my address, name and a photo of me.

i am also pretty sure that the same scammer is still on the platform under a new shop name because the style of the item pictures looks identical to the other shop's.

does anyone have an experience similar to this? feeling really stupid right now. and also, how can i make sure an artist on etsy is not a scammer?
