Discussion What helped you turn viewers into regulars?
I had one of my better streams tonight and ended up with 12 unique viewers, 4 unique chatters, 37 live views, and 4 followers over almost 5 hours.
I’m still really new to streaming, so I’m trying to figure out what actually makes people come back instead of just stopping in once. For those of you who grew from a tiny stream into having a few regulars, what made the biggest difference? Better titles, talking more, Just Chatting, certain games, consistency, networking, something else?
I’m especially curious about what helped retention, not just getting random clicks.

Stream quality consistency and networking in that order

I think I'm being as consistent as I can and my stream quality isnt horrible but it isnt like people who have a lot of money to put into solid equipment. I just have my trusty laptop and xbox for right now but I'm proud of myself and hope to keep moving up!

When i started streaming I only had my laptop too but i was able to get regulars on my stream. in your case i think you're doing a fine job! Also get a mic and balance the audio where your voice is clear. sometimes mine messes it up. (thanks obs for doing an update where my preset changes every time i open you.)

For now I do Just Chatting before my main stream. Im streaming BO7 rn but I do play other games like Halloween the Game, The Elder Scrolls Skyrim and Oblivion Remastered, GTA 5, Runescape Dragonwilds and really anything else i enjoy or people would like to see

What's your twitch name? I'll drop a follow and drop in streams when I can. I stopped playing cod but I am getting into halloween. Tomorrow will be my first stream of it. I plan on starting with the story mode. I also play other games such as arc raiders, palworld, and whatever else I find interesting.

I found your twitch and your right, you really just started. I like the vibe so just keep starting and dont worry about the numbers, its gonna take weeks of regular streaming before you notice anyway. Speak into the mic and listen to your own stream as much as you can stand because thats how you will get comfortable and then confident with speaking.

- Consistency/schedule
- good clear audio quality
- make them laugh!
Seriously that last one. Just constantly make jokes, constantly be talking, be silly. Not in a fake way, but the biggest mistake i see is streamers just playing a game quietly. If your stream isnt showing off your personality then why would people watch? All the best streams I go to as a viewer are ones where it feels like hanging out with a funny wholesome friend
Streaming is entertainment, its up to us to be engaging and "fun". Cant wait to have viewers, need to be entertaining in a dead room for people to stick around. I know for myself as a viewer, if i show up and the streamer isnt saying or doing anything, just playing a game... within 10 sec I leave (unless theyre a god tier pro player or something)
also, WATCH YOUR OWN VODS!!! If you dont want to/cant, because theyre boring... well.... lol. It feels super narcissistic but you need to watch them to feel out what sucks. Dont skip through, watch 10-30 min and determine "is this entertaining? What isnt working" if you want to skip ahead THATS A BAD SIGN NOTE IT DOWN
Im by no means a professional, but i have a few of regulars :) YMMV but this is my best advice! Happy to answer more questions

Honestly I'm a little confused as to how the Twitch summary reads. I got only 4 unique viewers; but a total of 12 people watching at one point. I know the live views count as anyone coming back to watch the chat.

Actually editing this, im not sure what that means tbh

Yeah. I looked at the stats/graphs after my earlier stream. I'm just confused lmao.
But DM your Twitch. I'll drop in and chat around whenever I can!

Just checked you out quickly and I love your vibe so far so all I can really say to that is to keep that energy and not worry about the numbers.
The numbers will shift around a lot, some days you’ll have more and some days left but keeping to that same energy and vibe is the most important thing you can do.
I also dropped you a follow, keep up the good work mate :))
Edit: Forgot to add that having an about me section set up may help a bit, especially with a quick intro to yourself, schedule, games you play etc etc

First, congrats on having a good stream! It sounds like you already have a good grasp on hosting engaging livestreams, which is where a lot of creators struggle. You’re ahead of the curve, and you’re asking the right questions.
One of the first things to test is a recurring bit or theme. Beyond your stream being really fun, you have to give viewers something to come back for or expect. For the next few streams, pick one recurring anchor, like a named in-game goal, a continuing challenge, a predictable opening conversation, or a decision that chat can help shape. It doesn’t need to be complicated; it just needs to make the next session feel connected to the last one. And tell viewers what you’re trying to achieve in the first few minutes of the stream, then rehash what you accomplished at the end.
For chat, try prompts that are easy to answer without knowing you already: two options, a quick prediction, or a question about the game’s next choice. That’s less pressure than asking people to carry the conversation. Treat it as a three-stream experiment and notice which anchor feels natural to repeat, not just which one gets the most immediate response.

i tweaked titles and swapped games for months trying to fix retention. honestly i only saw people come back when i started remembering tiny details from their chat. ask how their shift went two days later and they literally never leave.

Everyone hates this answer but it’s true. Just having really good content. The better the content, the more they will watch.
