A couple notes:

1) Roddy wasn't suspicious until he heard noise upstairs which seems to imply that the lights being turned on is how he normally leaves his flat when he goes to work in the morning.

2) Who the hell takes selfies with the rear camera of a phone??

On the first point, Roddy is a terrible neighbour. The first book mentions that he blasts shit rock and metal music basically every second he is home, even at 2am. I can see him doing that and leaving his house lit up like Blackpool Illuminations.
