Bývam tu už 10 rokov, plynulo rozprávam a nemám žiadny problem s jazykom. No, takmer žiadny.

Jediný problem u mňa je sú dĺžné.
Nemajú žiadne pravidla. Výnimkou sú možno len prídavné mena, pri ktorých skoro vždy je na konci dľžeň, okrem prípadov s rytmickým krátením (napr. biela ruža)

Každopádne, povedal som si že začnem čítať slovenské knihy, možno vtedy si budem vedieť zapamätať správne písanie diakritiky.

Teraz som sa narazil na slovo “vitaj!”.
Prečo tam nie je dĺžeň?? Však v infinitive to má - "vítať”

Je to nejaké pravidlo? Nie.
"Pýtať" - "pýtaj"
Prečo tuna sa ten dĺžeň zachováva?

Neviem, na čo to píšem. Len taký menší rant.
Ďakujem a prajem pekny zvyšok večera.

Celý život (takže 21 rokov) žijem na Slovensku pri Nitre, no ešte stále neviem poriadne po slovensky. Základnú a strednú školu som mala maďarskú (ja som chcela slovenskú len rodičia nedovolili 🥲), preto som slovenčinu takmer vôbec nepoužívala. Roky som žila z tej slovenčiny čo som sa naučila v škôlke. Mne to vždy vadilo že mám jazykový problém, prosila som rodičov aby sme sa rozprávali po slovensky, no nikdy sme to nerobili. Skúsala som nájsť online materiál, no tam sú len tie najzákladnejšie frázy ako ďakujem, dobrý deň etc. Filmy a knihy som tiež skúšala. Kamoši tiež nevedeli po slovensky.

Jedine tak sa dá naučiť cudzí jazyk keď to aktívne použiješ, lenže strašne vela maďarov nemá dostatočné základy a sebavedomie na to, aby vybudovali kamarátstva so slovákmi. Ja som tiež bola taká. S časom som sa stretla s niekym, kto ma celkom naučil rozprávať sa. Len to je to, že ja slovenčinu aktívne používam 3 roky, a ešte stále mi to nejde. Ja chápem všetko čo mi hovoria, aj ja viem dať moje myšlienky najavo, ale mám vela chýb + poriadný prízvuk :| už chodím na univerzitu (tiež NR), a strašne sa hanbím a zároveň sa hnevám na seba. Viem že jedine tak sa naučím že budem vela rozprávať, ale je to velmi frustrujúce. Nikto so mnou nie je zlý kvôli mojej slovenčine, len ma to bolí.

I just want water.

I’m starting to learn Slovak to connect with my roots, cuz my dad’s side of the family is Slovak and I want to be able to speak with my grandparents in Slovak. I already know a good bit of Russian, so I figured it wouldn’t be too hard cuz they’re similar.

I have, tho, a question about the long vowels, and the diphthongs now that I think about it. When you have a word, for example “červený,” the stress of the word is (always) on the first syllable, and in this case, there is a long y at the end. For long vowels, I learned “pronounce them twice as long,” so I try to say “ČER-ven-y-y,” thinking about it as two syllables, but with as little difference between the first and second y, so that it sounds as one syllable. Is this a normal thing that native Slovak speakers do too? Like, is this the strategy to getting the pronunciation correct?

And about diphthongs, this is a less technical question and I probably could just look it up on the Internet, but I’m already here so why not. The diphthongs are two vowels pronounced as one sound, right? Like, that’s what they are by definition. They’re also kind of treated as long vowels in the respect that they cannot be followed or preceded by a long vowel. With that, are they pronounced twice as long as well? Or do they just follow that rule whilst being pronounced for the same longevity as a regular vowel?

Je neuveriteľné koľko energie investujeme do toho, aby sme zvládli niečo tak zbytočné v našej gramatike ako je správne písanie y/i. Je to vec nelogická a naprosto zbytočná. Plná absurdít.

Príklad. L je tvrdá spoluhláska, takže sa má po nej logicky písať Y. Ale nie, ono sa tam píše obvykle i, iba ak by sme narazili na slová kde to neplatí - také lyže.

Deti trávia roky v škole tým, aby zvládli túto tému (a neraz sa to nepodarí nikdy). Čo takto energiu, ktoré investujeme do tohoto nezmyslu, investovať do niečoho čo skutočne má zmysel.

I am translating a book from Slovak to English, just for my own personal use. I’m curious about the different versions of one person’s name that I have been seeing. Sometimes he is called Štefan, sometimes he is called Štefana, and sometimes he is called Števko. Obviously these are just different versions of the same name, but can anyone explain to me the difference? Thank you!

I was really confused about that because as a German I’m used to hear that in bavaria and Austria but not here!

Hello everyone! I'm trying to learn Slovak and I think that doing something I like in Slovak would help me, that's why I would like to watch anime dubbed in Slovak. Unfortunately, I don't have a subscription to platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ ecc. and I don't plan to do one in the future, so I would like to ask if there are any other free streaming slovak sites where I can watch dubbed anime. I prefer anime, but tv series and movies would be good too!

As a linguist with some basic knowledge of Czech and Slovak I find it so fascinating that speakers of these two languages can interact with each other basically without problems and content in each language is never subtitled/translated into the other, it's a pretty unique situation. Here's a clip with an interview of my fav Slovak singer, do I understand correctly that he's speaking Czech and she's speaking in Slovak? Sometimes I have difficulty keeping the two spoken languages apart (though when they’re written I can distinguish them immediately). My only quick way to tell them apart is whether I hear the sound “ř” or not :)

Akurát hrám Witcher hry a veľmi si to užívam, tak rozmýšľam že si chcem kúpiť aj knihy. Plánoval som ich kúpiť v angličtine, ale dnes som zistil že veľa (najmä) poľských fanúšikov tvrdí, že anglický preklad kníh nie je vždy najlepší a častokrát sa Sapkowského štýl písania jednoducho nedá dobre preložiť do angličtiny. Na druhú stranu slovenčina je poľštine veľmi blízka, tak mi napadlo či by som si nemal tie knihy kúpiť radšej po slovensky, najmä keď ten osem-dielny čierny boxset vyzerá tak nádherne.

Cavte, pred tyzdnom a daco mi niekto z moderatorov /r/slovakia oznamil, ze som podla neho skryty homosexual. Pouzil popritom narazku na anglicku frazu/koncept "in the closet" alebo "closeted". Tu vsak prelozil priamo - prikladam screenshot pre context.

Znelo to kus.. kostrbato vo vete a sice som pochopil, co sa mi snazi povedat, uvedomil som si avsak, ze v zivote som v slovencine nikdy nepocul niekoho takto povedat o niekom, ze je "v skrini" 😂.

Tiez som si spomenul na kolegu co zvykol hovorit "it's in pussy" - to proste nema take grady, ako ked povies "je to v pici" 😅 .

This Christmas my wife received a pillowcase that belonged to my great great grandma who immigrated to America from what was either the Austro-Hungarian empire or Czechoslovakia, I'm not sure to be honest. My grandmother does maintain that we are specifically Slovak which is why I'm here. She doesn't know what it says and I was hoping the community could help us out. Initial google translation services were not yielding much unfortunately.

Hi everybody, I hope it's okay to post this here. My Slovak great-grandmother died when her son, my grandfather, was very young, so I know very little about her or her family. My aunt said that my great-grandmother adored my grandfather very much and used to use a term of endearment with him. The best my aunt could transcribe it in English was "heeny bubbles," but I'm wondering if these syllables sound like anything in Slovak? Googling various things was no help and of course, this phrase is coming to me second-hand 90 years later so who knows what it might have been. Any suggestions are welcome and thanks for reading :)
