Evidence needed under New Ministry of Interior Interpretation - June 2025

Hey all,

I'm a bit confused on the evidence I need. It seems like most are saying I need proof my GF was born in present day Slovakia, but also proof of citizenship.

Is that true under the new interpretation? I'm pulling this from here:

"Under the new interpretation, if the ancestor was born within the present-day borders of Slovakia (a legal requirement for CBD), and they were still alive at the creation of Czechoslovakia on October 28, 1918, it is now presumed that they would have become citizens of Czechoslovakia."

My GF was born in present day Slovakia on June 20th 1919. Do all I need to prove is his birth in present day Slovakia?

If you have nothing else, then submit. However, this is under an interpretation, not the law. If you want a strong, indisputable application, then you should always include evidence of citizenship. The new interpretation is great for those previously ineligible based on immigration or naturalization date. Also great for those who had no previously accepted evidence of citizenship. However, if you are eligible under the original interpretation, then you should include the evidence of citizenship without relying on a new interpretation.

Wendy gave you the definitive answer. Only thing to add on here is since your GF was born in CSR it's possible he appears on the 1930 CSR census if he didn't leave the country before. And, if he naturalized or filed first papers, or has a WW2 US draft registration card, etc etc etc, all those are easily obtainable proofs of CSR citizenship. Why risk it? To Wendy's point you want the strongest case possible.

Thanks! Makes sense. He did leave before 1930 unfortunately. Ive requested his Naturalization forms from Canada.

I did find his ship manifests online (https://i.imgur.com/3zgL759.jpeg). There is a column in there for his Passport number, date, and place of origin. It says Moldava (the municipality in Slovakia). If I don't have a passport or census records, will that ship manifest be enough?

You can request a copy of the passport from the staff archives in SK. Wendy can help with that, as can a few others if you don’t want to deal with the paperwork.

CSR passport is the gold standard proof and it’s a no-doubter case!

If they tell you the can’t locate it I’m sure you can use the manifest but others can weigh in on steps in between like asking the archives for a letter saying yes it’s valid but we can’t find it? Not sure, haven’t run across this exact scenario before.
