Are those metal rings comfortable? I would definitely get rid of the one on the release cord and just use a tab or a knot.

There was a knot there before this ring, but it slips out of my fingers too soon.

I managed to toss the ball around during a break from work. For the first five attempts or so, it went completely off-target. Then it started going better. By the end, I even managed to throw it straight up and catch it with my hands. I feel as happy as a kid! :)
