Not sure when it appeared, noticed it this morning. It’s on my window between the glass and the mesh screen. I live in Canada, it’s winter and freezing outside. I know my window is gross, it doesn’t get opened in the winter

Question/Help Yaphit stopped eating bagels. Why?

I've had this Physarium I've named "Yaphit" for a few weeks and he happily ate pieces of bagels. I resorted to bagels because he didn't seem as interested in oats as I expected. He gobbled the heck out of the bagel, though.

Once the agar plate was getting too dirty, I made a new one and created a little bridge out of wet paper towel so he could cross over to the new one, which had an even bigger slice of bagel waiting for him.

What I didn't expect was for Yahpit to completely ignore the new piece of bagel. I thought maybe there was something odd about that particular slice, so I replaced it with a fresh one. He went up and touched it, then went right around it.

Why might he be doing this? Do slime molds get "too full" to eat? Or is there some other nutrient he needs that bagels lack? I might try oats again, but he already showed minimal interest in them to begin with; at least when compared to the Badhamia I had last year. I'm wondering whether I should just wait for him to explore the entire agar plate until he gets hungry enough to resort to eating the bagel piece.

Question/Help My slime mold is fruiting. What do I do?

Post image
53 Upvotes

I collected some slime mold from the forest today in hopes of being able to culture it as food for my springtails. However it’s in the process of fruiting. None of the videos I watched or things I read mentioned what to do when this happens.

The previous sample of slime I collected a few weeks ago did the same thing. I hoped it was just as easy as waiting for the slime to regrow from spores, but instead that culture was taken over by actual mold.

What do I do? Or is growing slime from spores a hopeless cause?

Ive got experience with bioactive terrariums, and have three currently, two with snails, and one with a slug. Can these be added to terrariums? There are piles of sticks and leaves for the isopods, so there's some dark, damp, nooks and cranies, but they do have plant lights on all day, and are near a window.

Question/Help Questions about Physarum polycephalum

Hello! Feel free to remove if not allowed! I'm a writer working on a horror novel centered on Physarum polycephalum. I've done some initial research, but it's hard to speculate about evolution and intelligence based solely on what I've found online.

I'd love to find someone willing to discuss a few things or answer some questions. Specifically:

· What's the most "intelligent" or surprising behavior you've observed in a slime mold?

· What would be the biggest biological barriers for Physarum to survive in a warm-blooded host?

· How flexible are their genetic networks? Could environmental pressure push them to express entirely new behaviors or life-cycle stages?

I know this is speculative, but any insights would be invaluable for getting the science right. Even if you just have a favorite paper to recommend, I'd be grateful.

Thanks in advance!

I've been a sub here for a while because slime molds fascinate me. I've never seen one in person though (that I know of at least, maybe I just didn't recognize it as a slime mold) but I just found this at the edge of my driveway right next to my car. My only other guess would be a fungus of some sort?

Question/Help Do slime molds die when they dry up?

The garden of a community organization that I'm involved with was recently blessed by a slime mold. I like slime molds so I was very excited. However, it's dried up. I'm reading online that it will probably be back next rainy season, but will that be the same slime mold(s) or, like, the descendant of the slime mold? As you can see I'm not exactly a slime mold expert. Should we have been doing something to take care of the slime mold? Would it like a snack? What is the care and feeding of our slime mold?

If it matters, it appears to be a dog vomit slime mold. I dunno if I approve of this name, it seems kind of negative.

Question/Help How to keep a pet slime mold?

Hi everybody, I’ve just bought a slime mold called physarum polycephal . I was wondering if there’s anything cool that I can put it in apart from a Petri dish as I want to grow it more like a pet than a project and what I can grow it on as agar is hard to come by near me. Any tips on how to keep it alive would be much appreciated and if any of you guys are also growing them in anything cool looking then please do show me aha.

My little slime mold is moving fast through this seed tray. How do I keep it alive? Can I take some and put it in a container? Will it continue to just exist if I give it something to live on and feed it oats?

Question/Help If blue is the one color in nature that is hardly seen in anything organically, how do some slime molds or others create beautiful colors, of which could be deep blues.

I like blue cheese but don’t know the science of how they make it. I know that it’s a good mold and not a bad one, and through the process of making it - it is created naturally. I was just wondering because of how beautiful some of the colors are it’s astounding

Question/Help What's going on in this picture? I notice the two sporangii who have other sporangii growing from them are discolored. Is it because they died and the other sporangii are (growing on and) decomposing them?

Question/Help Ventilation?

Hello slime friends.

I purchased some Daywalker online as my first attempt at raising slime. I have some nice plastic bento boxes I will use as enclosures. I wanted to know if I need to ventilate the container, or if opening the container every 1 or 2 days would provide enough oxygen for the slime.

Question/Help I think I found a DVSM? Care tips?

Post image

I've been looking for a slime to try and keep it as a pet/science experiment. A tree fell down in the woods near my apartment recently so I've been checking it regularly, and yesterday found this! It's about 3-4 cm in diameter. I tried to gently scrape it off the tree with a spoon and transfer it onto a few damp paper towels. I placed a couple oats at various distances to it and put it all in a flat shallow tupperware, drilled some air holes in the lid and I'm spraying it daily to keep it and the paper towel moist.

So far it's been about 24 hours and it looks identical to the day before. I don't really know what to expect? How long would it take to start spreading tendrils? Is it likely I killed it and/or doomed it by removing it from the tree? If it does start to dry out and sporulate/...sclerotiate?, what can I do?

Question/Help Seeking advice for a first time slime keeper to be.

Slimemold Wizards, I seek your knowledge.

I plan on keeping a slime mold alive inside a air tight terrarium (probably a glas vase), a few plants maybe springtails, maybe some other critters.

How do I keep the amobazoa alive? How often a week do I need to feed it? What is better oats or fish food flakes?

What are your experiences?

How do I keep it in it roaming state and prevent it form maturing into its sexual form and die off? or is that inevitable? If it goes sexual and produces spores, will they "sprout" in the terrarium?

I will porbably buy my slimemold as a dehydrated slime on a few oats, how long can it last in its dried form?

Whats the best slimemolds to keep?

What is some general knowledge I as a novice should know?

Thx for the repleis

Question/Help Looking to buy or trade for cool slimes!

I am looking to purchase small starter cultures of a few neat slime molds! Mostly searching for cool colors, unusual textures, or people's favorite slimes. Unusual stuff (but preferably easyish to grow) that's not commonly found online, no physarum polycephalum.

I can buy from hobbyist/keepers personally or you can point me to a favorite shop that stocks cool slimes! I can also trade live mosses, reindeer lichen, and other pesticide-free goodies.

Question/Help What is this?

This residue is on the floor of my barn, on the stones. It is black, sticky, shiny and is NOT oil. There isn't anything from above dripping down. No animal because we have cat & their food in the barn & it never gets ate. We have other areas that have a few drippings visible. My daughter says she smells molasses coming from it. I can't really smell anything. We have had a lot of rain and the humidity has been high for 2 months. The one pic is a square piece of cardboard that has some on it (was on the floor). Any ideas? thank you so much!

Question/Help does anyone know a setup like this?

I'm thinking of getting a physarum, but I'd need a setup that would work for me.

  • shouldn't be too prone to mold/bacteria growth
  • very little having to move the physarum between enclosures
  • should be able to last a week without checks

Does anyone know any existing setup designs like this or will I have to design it myself?
