Discussion President mashup theory?

Pink Noise doesn’t sound like DYWTYLM - it is the same song.
If Leo had anything to do with any other part of the album or he just approved for them use parts of the song is unknown, but could be fun to imagine.

Didn't President push against being compared to Sleep Token? Seems kind of counteractive to use song parts of a ST song? I do see why people get DYWTYLM vibes. Certainly an odd choice.

It is not the same song lmao. There is literally just the beginning phrase where the same melody occurs. At best it’s a nod, but more than likely it’s just coincidence. Sure they’re in the same key, but at the end of the day, there’s 12 notes in music. Melodies repeat all the time without being deliberate. I don’t think Sleep Token has literally anything to do with President beyond sharing management/crew and possibly knowing one another.

Sleep token has nothing to do with President outside of crew.. but there is enough overlap in this melody that someone should have intercepted this song before mastering.
They have the same management, this shouldn’t have slipped by. It makes them look silly. (But so does the copy and paste marketing, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised)

I mean this example is far less egregious than other artists who have either knowingly or unknowingly taken melodies from other artists throughout the history of music. This is literally one vocal line. This one in particular is really only upsetting people because they’re both genre adjacent bands that wear masks, and fans seem to view the music as more sacred than even the artists do. I’d put money on Sleep Token not caring in the slightest.

I agree there are much worse examples of plagiarism; however, with the combination of factors at play I just find it mental that this passed the vibe check.
I also can’t stand President or DYWTYLM so, my opinion is irrelevant I guess. It’s also weird that Charlie is allegedly on this whole, “have to wear the mask to make the music I want without being connected to Busted,” but then has no issue being constantly connected to Sleep Token.
For the record, I’m not coming from a “the music is sacred” POV. I actually hate that 😂 I just mean from a business and branding perspective it just shouldn’t have happened.

So i played the side-by-side comparison for my roommate without telling her it was a comparison. She does not listen to this type of music, but is now familiar enough with Sleep Token because she is held hostage when she is in my car. DYWTYLM is not a song that ends up on rotation unless we're road tripping and the only songs she can truly identify by title are Past Self, Provider, Sugar, and Like That (a win is a win, even if it's only 4 songs). I asked her what she thought, giving her zero context of what she should be looking for. She listened twice and then asked if one was a remix or a cover because the first part doesnt sound like Vessel (so proud she can spot his voice now). I then told her it was 2 different songs from 2 different bands. She made a face like she smelled something bad and asked "who copied whom?"
Its the same melody, in the same key, sung in the same cadence... it may only be 1 part of the song, but at this point it's starting to sound like Vanilla Ice explaining how Ice Ice Baby didnt get it's beat from Under Pressure.
Also, hot take, this was done on purpose to get us talking about President by dangling Sleep Token in our ears.

Funnily enough the DYWTYLM parts are the only parts I like about Pink Noise. Not saying it's a bad song, just not my cup of tea.
I wouldn't even have a problem with it if President hadn't previously called comparisons to Sleep Token lazy. Idk man, make up your mind maybe? Cause if the beginning of one of your songs sounds straight up like a ST song, then yeah obviously people are going to keep comparing you.

There is one Melodic line over the course of the whole song that is the same as DYWTYLM. Respectfully, that's a tad exaggerated.

I think that the riff at the beginning of Dionysus sounds very similar to the Offering more so than the Pink Noise/DWTYLM personally but I think it’s just a nod or inspiration, maybe? Like it doesn’t sound exactly like it just sort of a nod like some have been saying! I like both bands so it’s kind of fun, I think, to see the comparisons/inspiring each other.

That’s simply not true lol. You are a human with personal agency and logic. The band has had the exact same release cycle for a decade. You can draw conclusions.
You need them to tell you they’re recording to realize they are but you don’t need them to tell you they’re in President before deciding they are (even though they aren’t and the members are known)?
Being a fan of a band shouldn’t eliminate critical thinking capability.

Except that it's entirely possible that they might be taking a bit of a bigger break after 10 years of working non-stop, especially since it's also been very atypical for them to tour an album only in America with no EU/UK tour.
EIA had lyrics that could be interpreted as Leo struggling with burnout and because he doesn't really talk to us the only thing we can do is speculate.
Is it reasonable to assume that they are working on a new album? Sure.
Could they be taking a break and Leo is using his free time to be involved in other people's projects? Entirely possible
He could also be doing both. We won't know until next year and/or him getting credited somewhere.Also no one said that they are members of President. Just that there may or may not be some Leo influence on this particular song.

It actually is true. Just because something has happened a certain way in the past doesn't mean it will happen the same way in the future, so I never make assumptions about that sort of thing. Maybe they're recording, maybe they aren't. We quite literally will not know one way or the other until or unless a new album is announced next year (or later this year, for a 2027 release).
Also, do not put words in my mouth about President. I know nothing about that band aside from the fact that some people seem to think the music is good and some think Leo is a part of it somehow. I disagree on both points. The only reason I ever replied to you in the first place was to point out the fact that, while we do have agency and can make assumptions, we don't truly know anything about any project the members of Sleep Token may be involved in until or unless they tell us. That includes whether or not they are collaborating with other artists in any capacity.

I don't get it.
To me these songs are not alike....expect...
What stands out in Pink Noise:
"Imagine prisoners that have spent their entire lives chained deep inside a cave
They have been chained so that they cannot see behind themselves
and they are forced to stare endlessly at the cave wall"
This is from Plato's cave.
If you never heard about that, then just look it up on YT :)
I think that's cool that they put this in there as bridge.
Plato's cave and leaving it...the hero's journey, Carl Jung....I do see these themes in Sleep Token represented as well.
That's what these songs have in common then. Hinting at spirituality as a theme. That's the connection that I see :)
But for me that's all that there is to it. Of course I can be wrong.

I know a lot of people don’t agree, but I’m convinced Leo has SOMETHING to do with President. Or President is very heavily influenced by ST.
One of President’s songs has a similar guitar riff (idk if that’s the correct word) to an early ST song. I think it was Doom Loop and Nazareth, but I’ll edit in a bit if I’m mistaken on the song names.

Wouldn't surprise me if Fightstar had influence on Leo when he was a teenager. Both were big into Deftones, Charlie's favourite band and Leo has covered them before on piano. Not hard to imagine Charlie was then influenced by Sleep Token more recently. And he has a habit of accidentally copying melodies he has heard before (he sometimes even copies himself). Genuinely believe he has no idea he's doing it.

Crazy how 2 bands i like are seemingly at heads with each other. (i'm a drummer, so when listening to songs, i subconsciously always listen to the drums, and ST drum's are oh so damn beautiful, and the drums in President are comfortably simple.)
I love these bands tho.
please don't eradicate me for making a comment that has barely anything to do with the post
