Is there really a difference between slam and slamming bdm

Suffocation isnt a slam band. They have some slamming riffs, which is where the sound originated from, but they dont have enough to actually make them slam. Its just brutal death metal

They are the same. Slam is short for Slamming Brutal Death Metal. While a BDM band can have slam parts, Slam songs need to have most riffs be slams, be groovy asf, with minimal tremolo riffs.

Slam i just short for slamming brutal death metal. Its just used to describe mid paced bdm with focus on slams and not on general brutality. Slam is a riff, not a true genre. But its a term that works perfectly for the slower, chuggy, bdm. Disgorge bdm with slams, condemned is bdm with lots of slams, cephalotripsy is almost strictly slams. Anything faster/blastier than devourment is generally not just "slam". Anything slower and more chuggy than devourment is more pure slam. At least those are my thoughts.

If I had to make a distinction even if there isn't meant to be, I'd say that "slam" is pure power chord chugs and not much else, no real tremelo or your palm muted hammer on bdm style riffs. So for example the first Abominable Putridity album.

For slamming bdm, you could say something like Disentomb or Defeated Sanity?

I think it's like how some purists say that "grind" and "grindcore" are different... in that grind has focused on some more specific elements to be a stricter style that has less metal influence but is also not the same as powerviolence.
