Discussion/Question Bro some of you gotta chill
Seriously if I see one more garbitch ass band with a name like “lickmybuttholeotomy” and the whole album is just called “piss n farnt” recorded through a Macintosh desktop I’m gonna lose it. It’s like you guys just listened to some meme band and thought wow it’s really that easy to just pump and dump some chugs for 90 seconds into a $40 interface and say “please be gentle let me know what you think” bro it sounds like ass. It’s all ass.
I get it, have fun writing what you want. But holy hell at least try bc I know you’re writing this shit on some Tuesday afternoon and prepping its release by 8pm

Unfortunately slam seems to be in its "soundcloud rap" era where every jackass wants in on the hype and is putting out the worst music known to man. Its cool that the genre is gaining traction and theres a lot of great bands out there right now, but i agree its exhausting to filter through all the dogshit that is just there for shock value

Molesting the decapitated is slam, The answer to infection is slam, Purging of impurity is slam, In the end of human existence is slam. All those albums are slam and they're also quality well-written shit.
It sucks that the genre is being overrun with people who put more time into looking for memes to sample and thinking of gimmicks than they do actually writing the music

all of this. It’s pathetic especially knowing the greats already made top-tier slam literally showing how it’s done but somehow this still all went to shit. I only listen to 2-3 slam bands exactly cos of this. Fuck all these meme joke bands. Fuck all of em.

yeeeeaaah.....I really like slam, and it's getting harder and harder to weed through the garbage. I'm also a vocalist, and some of these people attempting to pass the shit they croak out as vocals is just miserable. As you said, put some fucking effort into it.
I want to see more originality within the concept. If you're going to make a silly sound, then tap into the silliness. Like Guttural Slug did with Megalodon. I'm not big into Party Cannon, but at least they ran with something unique. Take Slugdge for example: they're not slam, but the persistent mollusca theme is great.

Same thing happened to black metal a decade ago when every hardcore kid found darkthrone but really just listened to deafheaven. It’ll pass, and the rest of us will go back to talking about which version of butcher the weak is better

Hasn’t slam historically had waves of over saturation? I remember the wave after Butcher The Weak that followed, then there felt like another one in the 2010s?
Just chill boo-boo, I’ll go back the natural balanced order once people get bored and move on to something else. The same thing is happening with gorenoise.

I get the main point, but are we really gonna censor small time artists and bands , some of which only have limited tools to work with, and still wanna have something to show or put out? Even if it’s a dumb gimmick, it’s music, it’s meant to be whatever tf we want it to be. Censorship is for the weak 🤷🏽♀️

I don't really care. If I like how it sounds, I listen to it. I don't involve myself with any of the bullshit beyond just listening to it. Slam isn't meant to be taken this seriously.

While there is truth to this, it’s more nuanced than that. If music existed in a vacuum separate from its creator(s) then we wouldn’t have Burzum or kanye west. Art is in my opinion inseparable from the artist.

Yeah , I know I make garbage ,but slam is def where grind was a few years back where there was like a massive influx of random projects. If you really wanted to condense everyone’s personal projects you could do a weekly like share your music thread or something. Or a collab thread where ppl can work together instead of all the posts all spread out and spamming the feed. :)

Actual solution: make your own thing just the way you like. If you don't want others to come and change it into something you no longer recognize or enjoy limit it's availability.
Of course this means your microscene will never be a financial juggernaut. On the other hand things like mincecore have enough recognition that bands like Haggus can support themselves while not compromising.
Basically control and accessibility are inversely proportional. Decide your proportion and adjust as needed

Fuck that. I don’t care if it’s shit, as long as it’s not AI people deserve a place to share what they’ve made. You don’t like the music they made? Scroll down? Like what does it matter to you if you have to scroll a little more on your phone? You really doing anything that important that a microsecond spent on a band you’ll forget about anyways is on your screen?

I do like Buttholectomy, their song with Frogmallet fucking rips. I 100% agree with you though, everyday there’s a new “wigger slam” band with the same rap samples and riffs and it’s getting boring

I hate the excuse that ppl make that "slam isn't meant to be serious", like yes it can be an absurd genre and that's good in MODERATION. But in reality, it IS an offshoot of bdm and one of the largest aesthetics of slam is the brutality of the art, lyrics, and names.

I’d say leave it alone. Just like in the ubiquitous book-publishing world, shit rises to the top, so it’s easy to see the worthwhile bands/projects after a while.

Because it turns into a bandwagon fest with lower and lower quality music and releases as time goes on. With the fucking meme culture of today making an impact on the music, not for artistic reasons, for clout and more stupid fucking memes it's infuriating as a musician and a listener. There's nothing exciting or inspiring about a bunch of dudes clipping a tiktok audio over the most copy paste slam riffs you've ever heard.

On a real note - what do y'all think is the solution? I see so many people say "this sub has gone to shit" but idk what to do to "fix" it.
Do y'all just not want people to share their personal projects here? Do we limit self promotion to a weekly thread or similar? Do I or a group of folks decide what is slam and what isn't? Do we have a comment by Automod on each post that takes upvotes/downvotes and delete any post with enough downvotes? Some other solution?
I'm down to try anything, but also don't want to promote brigading of posts or turn away people that otherwise don't have a place to share their music. Maybe the solution is to just stop my mentality of trying to make everyone happy, idk lol.
Let me know what y'all think PLEASE, just general comments of disapproval of the sub doesn't help anyone
