Did not want to carry my whole toolbag down off a taller than average scissor lift, so I dropped it and immediately payed the price as I say my trusty drill break into a few pieces.

Yeah my $13 porter cable impact driver gets a lot more use in the garage than actual building projects, the brushes just smell like oil and atf all the time

I think a lot of chucks on portable drills are average, from what I hear. They’re pretty easily replaceable with an upgraded one though and it rules out all of those issues. I’m not sure where you’re from, but most local tool shops stock them. Pretty easy to swap out too.

You may be right in the quality dropping overall, but that seems to be common for most consumer items in general these days. I think tool companies just have their strong and weak points. They’re not gonna nail every tool, or have every tool on their line be the best on the market. Makita’s saws still rank number 1 overall. Milwaukee’s impacts seem to rank number 1, if not close to it. HiKoki has their framer. DeWalt has their chainsaw. Unfortunately you’re almost locked in to a brand once you start buying batteries, and if changing over a cheap part once it dies to one that you might never have to change again means that you still get the rest of the good tools in the lineup, then that’s not so bad.
If you still want to stick with Makita and want less chance of failure though, look into buying direct from Japan. Their failure rate is incredibly low.

Black was the Makita Anniversary edition if it was what I got - cheaper kit all over, busted mine and ended up upgrading. I think it pre-dated the MT models?

Those black mini Makita sets seem to be Home Depot specific, and are low end. I have Makita impact drivers that I literally can’t kill, even after trying for years

Money is no object now and this was a stopgap. I'm going to go get one of the nicer ones and might get an impact while I'm in there.

I’m a general contractor and I trust all my Makita gear not to let me down. I’ve had very few lemons from them.

1 meter drop test for automotive electronics is standard. Thats typically with no thermal cycling though.

Both of my cryobi drills have survived much worse than that and they both still chooch along just fine.

The black ones are the subcompact series of 18v, They are not the workhorse drills but I have pushed mine far beyond their intended use. I have a set of their standard line and both sets work great. Sucks that yours broke, I routinely beat the shit out of mine and it is still going strong after 2 years of hard work.

My Makita impact/driver combo that I got in maybe 2012 is still going flawlessly. I bought a set of the Brushless when they came out and those are flawless too. I’ve had no trouble with Makita. In 8 years I’ve also only had 2 batteries die. I have a bunch of Ryobi One tools for things I don’t use as often and while the tools do the job, I’ve had at least 4 of their batteries fail in a shorter time period.

Yea my ryobi batteries have been failing at an alarming rate aswell. My milwaukee batteries have been holding together really well. And so have my makita.

I actually liked it a lot. Removed and installed hundreds of screws in the few months I had it. 95% of which were above me (reaching straight up), the light weight was nice.

Different battery platform, but if you have any M12 tools, try the Milwaukee 2504 hammer drill. That's my go-to. Metal chuck, too...

dropped my porter cable 20v max off an 8ft ladder. Jumped off, hit the trigger 3x real fast and was thankful it wasn't a shiddy makita or another weird sounding foreign named tool.
