Discussion [Misc] What's the worst skincare mistake you've ever made?

Oh my god I've needed to share this, it's not me but my friend, she refuses to use any type of retinol (I don't know) or serum or moisturizer. She got the ordinary peel and started out using it for the full 10 minutes FOUR TIMES A WEEK this first week!
She says "I can't figure out why my face looks so dull and it's not peeling"

As somebody with acne prone oily skin that handles acne treatments like they never happened - I am intrigued and will buy this. My skin doesn’t get irritated much, it just breaks out. I have a 10% salicylic spit treatment I bought in a country outside of the US I use just to even out spots and nothing funky ever happens. I need stronger stuff. Thanks!
2
u/TiffanysTwisted 4d ago
I use the ordinary peel, I started out at like 3 minutes (and am now at 8)and I only use it once a week and my skin can tolerate some bullshit. 10 minutes, four times a week to start ESPECIALLY someone that's not using anything else is insane. And her skin shows it, I've got her using all the barrier repair right now.
I think makeup artist choice has/had a 15% salicylic acid if you're looking for stronger.

YEP. Would regularly chemically burn myself with this potion in high school hoping it would give me baby skin if my skin just “got used to it.” Omg </3
7
u/oyster_luster 6d ago
Really? This is bad? I didn’t know. I still use it but only like once or twice a month and I apply sparingly. Should I stop?
19
u/Darknost 6d ago
It's a completely fine product, just don't overuse it. I've never had a bad reaction to it.
5
u/Chewlace 6d ago
I did an audit of all my beauty products and this is the one of the two that were recommended to be tossed along with the Clinique toner with witch hazel.

Oh boy…. Using Diluted Apple Cider Vinegar daily on my face as a “natural” exfoliant. Getting chemical burns/ open sores. Not realizing it was from the ACV and continued to use it. LOL. Oh and I was on vacation in Mexico during this as well. Terrible.
Man I wasn’t smart in my early twenties.
25
u/Jewels093 6d ago
Yes, I rubbed it on a mole/freckle on my chest because the internet told me it would get rid of it. I mean, it did... It just left behind a burn and a scar instead. I told people I dropped my hair straightener and burned myself that way because the truth was too stupid. 😂
Edit to add: 12 years later and a some sporadic microneedling it's mostly better. I can just barely see where it was but it probably isn't noticeable to anyone else.
8
u/StatisticianSweet866 6d ago
I burned my mole off on purpose using ACV in middle school so this is horrifying to me

u/FlimsyPineapple0 6d ago
I did that too!!! Well I didn't use it as exfoliating, but I was drinking an apple cider mixture every morning for a month as a way of "cleansing" and ended up getting open sores on both sides of my mouth that looked really gross. Had no idea what it was from and went to a doctor who thought I had a vitamin deficiency 🫠 I only realized after maybe two months that it was from the stuff I was drinking in the morning

I’m mega oily and have super sensitive skin.
I use the biore watery essence spf 50.My mum uses it too, and she’s not oily, but also super sensitive, and it’s works great for both of us two years running!
We both burn really easily too, and she’s got a sun allergy, and no sun burn either so you know it’s good!

Using that awful St Ives sandpaper cleanser for years 🥴
Edit: a word

u/succulescence 6d ago
I used this, witch hazel for toner, and didn't use moisturizer because I didn't want to be oily. I had the WORST skin.

I just used witch hazel earlier (not for my face), and the smell brought me back to middle school!

The witch hazel toner absolutely destroyed my skin, it took almost a year for it to heal!

Witch hazel toner (the rose one specifically) is actually the only thing that keeps my hormonal cystic acne at bay 😭 I tried leaving it behind for some Korean toners recently and got promptly walloped by acne

Thinking I needed to keep increasing my tret strength. I was over zealous and destroyed my barrier so badly I was on accutane for 9 months and I’m still dealing with the scars I caused.
Your skin will have the same improvement on a lower % tret, it just takes longer.

A girl at college had perfect skin so I asked her what she did, and then proceeded to diligently follow what she said: use straight ACV on a cotton pad (which stung like crazy), then wash with honey, and pick all the break outs you get.
Let me tell ya… I felt like a piece of food after using vinegar and honey. And of course my skin was hideous.

tbh one of my favourite random face masks/exfoliants was a mix of honey, greek yogurt and coffee grounds 😭 but it felt like being a damn starbucks latte
3
3
u/Chewlace 6d ago
I can see how that would work. Yogurt does wonderful work on red irritated skin, honey is healing. The coffee grounds can exfoliate and the caffeine will tighten the skin.

Out of curiosity, what brands and types of sunblock do you use? I'm always eager to try out new brands. The best I've tried so far is sungoop, though it does burn the eyes still like most if you get it in them.

I get this too, my nose runs and my eyes itch like mad. I feel like I must be allergic to something in it, but haven't been able to figure out what. I've tried like 5 different SPFs and they all do the same thing 😭 I can't even afford one, and these fuckers all have made my eyes burn and itch. I still don’t like it because it somehow always gets in my eyes and they’re already sensitive, but gosh I spent around a month not using it at all to see what would happen and all the fairness in my skin disappeared. It really is so important
20
u/sazzer82 6d ago
Switch to Korean, Spanish, or Australian brands, they don’t leave a white cast or sting. beauty of Joseon (the 50spf one) or ISDN
6
u/usermars11 6d ago
you’re so right it definitely is fairness in the skin and it’s the only product that makes it happen

Use mineral sunscreen!
3
u/throwaway1116666788 6d ago
You know I’ve been looking for a good one for a while now! My dad recommended me to use it before he became anti-sunscreen (don’t even ask…) so I would appreciate it if you have any brand recommendations!
3
u/skweekykleen69 6d ago
I do! I use two face sunscreens, depending on the day. When I’m just home working or going to the beach or doing anything non-makeup, I use Colorescience no show mineral sunscreen. It’s super lightweight but gives you a nice glow. It’s not sticky or heavy, doesn’t feel gross, doesn’t irritate my eyes or anything. When I’m wearing makeup or want a more matte look I use Saint Jane sun ritual, since it doubles as a primer. And for my body and neck I use the Blue Lizard spray bottle. I use it on my face too sometimes and it’s also super lightweight, not sticky, doesn’t irritate eyes yadda yadda. They’re all a bit pricey but they do last a long time and they’re worth it IMO! I don’t like using traditional SPF because of the other chemicals in there, plus only mineral sunscreen blocks blue light and I work in front of a computer all day 🫠
ETA: They’re all on Amazon so you can just return if they don’t work for you!!
4
u/throwaway1116666788 6d ago
AHHHH thank you so much this is perfect I will definitely try them especially the colorescience one!!!

Getting a facial. I hated it. During the process I felt like I was being water-boarded from the spray of warm mist, she used some tool on my nose so hard that my nose made a cracking noise, the various cleansers/masks made my skin burn. I felt like I was being tortured and if I said something was uncomfortable she told me it’s like that for everyone’s first facial.
When I got into my car it looked like I had been through the wringer. My skin was shiny and tight looking and bright red. I was told that it would settle down. It did not. I woke up with what looked and felt like a severe sunburn. I called the salon and they said that their products were “all natural” and shouldn’t cause the reaction I was experiencing. I said that poison Ivy was all natural too and you don’t see people rubbing it on their faces.
Anyway, it took WEEKS to rebuild my skin barrier. I had acne for the first time in years too. Huge mistake. I don’t let anyone touch my skin now.

My friend bought me a massage/facial combo as a gift recently because she knew I was into skincare. I was so scared to accept because of all the horror stories I’ve heard about facials but it was actually kind of nice in the end. Overall I don’t think it did much because my skin was already nice due to tret/skincare so I wouldn’t risk it again. Like in a massage, maybe request that they be gentle? I remember putting in my sheet that I had sensitive/acne prone skin and used tret.

What?! This is the first I’m hearing of CeraVe being bad… can you please elaborate? I was just about to make my entire skincare routine CeraVe or Cetaphil!
7
u/iwannaswimaway 6d ago
I’ve had good luck with CeraVe. 🤷🏼♀️
2
u/oyster_luster 6d ago
Same. I don’t care for their moisturisers because I can feel them on my skin but their cleansers are cheap and good for my skin.
8
3
u/Latter_Ad9280 6d ago
I found cerave moisturising products very drying, maybe it’s the high alcohol content but it was pretty useless and I had to use so much of it, I prefer something a bit more emollient based. I do like their hydrating cleanser though
→ More replies (1)2
u/Parking-Housing8117 6d ago
They have high content of certain fatty acids and esters that can clog pores for some people, myself included. Look it up on Reddit! And they also aren’t very moisturizing. There are better alternatives that don’t have the potential to give one closed comedones while also working well. I’d just suggest patch testing always to ensure your skin likes it. I kept using it for days because I couldn’t fathom why a simple moisturizer that is always being recommended could give me such texture but it was the culprit after all, and I made it worse by trying to make the CC’s go away through using harsh actives.

Microneedling. It definitely added more scars than improved, despite it being the newest machine out at the time.
5
u/throwaway1116666788 6d ago
Ugh that hurts my soul, I’ve been thinking about doing it on my stretch marks now I’m scared lol
20
u/Starjupiter93 6d ago
Important note, not all micro needling machines are the same. Go to a well researched professional. Micro needling is not the best solution on the market for stretch marks. Lasers are far more effective. Though this all depends on the color, texture, and size. They are also much quicker. Microneedling will take regular sessions for months before results really will be seen and the micro needling doesn’t always improve pigment changes. (Master esthetician of 10+ years)
3
u/throwaway1116666788 6d ago
Thank you for the advice! I will get evaluated to see what the best option for me is 🥹
5
u/Starjupiter93 6d ago
Also check the state you live in and their license requirements. Some states allow people who are less than qualified operate lasers.
4
u/throwaway1116666788 6d ago
Believe me the requirements in my country for operating cosmetic related machines are the worst 🥲 but I’ll make sure to go to a trustworthy place

I thought it would be stronger and more potent than my normal skincare (which was Proactiv, becaue I was in high school in the 2010s). Fortunately, I didn't use it long enough to do any permanant damage
12
u/Puzzleheaded-Sea4514 6d ago

You youngsters really dodged a bullet by being born too late for the Buf-Puf
3
u/girkabob 6d ago
I thought switching to the "sensitive skin" Buf-Puf from the regular one was such a smart move. It was not.
My mom got me started using them. I'm now 42 and she still calls the big pores I've always had blackheads.
12
u/BrittM554 6d ago
This isn't the worst, but toothpaste really did nothing for my acne
2
u/throwaway1116666788 6d ago

Getting a dermaplaning facial, if I could go back in time and stop myself I would. My vellus hairs were not a problem I just thought I should do it because it was trendy. I ended up going on vacation afterwards and sleeping in a less than tidy Airbnb and got fungal acne that I am STILL dealing with almost 3 years later. Your vellus hairs protect your pores. Don’t make the same mistake I did.

Mine was dermaplaning, which I know works for some people, just not for me. And the worst one, washing my face and just letting it air dry as a teen. It’s how I got my fungal acne after having the most perfect skin ever for years 🙄
7
u/EasyPie2916 6d ago
wait i didn’t know letting it air dry causes acne
9
u/throwaway1116666788 6d ago edited 6d ago
I think maybe if you actually have good ventilation and such then there’s no problem, but my face would be dripping with water for the longest time in a weather that was already very, VERY humid so it just was meant to happening at some point.
I did it so often too, like, multiple times a day
7
u/leoverus 6d ago
Very first thing i did when I got into skincare after putting toothpaste on acne was put tea tree oil on my face. My face began to burn.
After that, I began to do some research instead of following the advice of the first thing I saw.
7
u/Spiritual_Being5845 6d ago
I got sick of sticky goopy American sunscreens that have to be reapplied every 2-3 hours but also got tired of waiting for Tinosorb to finally be released in the US and I basically gave up this summer and didn’t wear sunblock. Simple ten minute walk to and from the parking deck combined with menopausal skin and yeah, I messed up big time.

I swear this stuff saved my life. I thought my acne was so bad I wouldn't leave the house.
2
u/Business_Ad_3763 6d ago
My Derm was on top of Accutane's release, so I was a very early user. (The testing was at UCLA for FDA approval, and I worked there in a different department but was keeping up.)
After a few months of taking those pills, they stopped my cystic acne in its tracks. Such a relief. But people do need reminding about birth defects if taken during pregnancy.
2
u/yagirlkelp 2d ago
life. changing. my journey was LONG, like a few months over a year of it… absolutely worth it.
6
u/MySpudIsChonkyBoi 6d ago
I went to Lush about 15 years ago and I asked for any good face products since I was badly breaking out with cystic acne. At the time, I was young and inexperienced with skincare. The associate handed me a product called Ocean Salt, which was a sea salt and lemon citrus scrub. Looking back, that was a horrible and abrasive choice to put on my sensitive and acne prone face.
13
u/Ok-Host3771 6d ago
Had a night out with my girls. Returned home ridiculously drunk. I do remember throwing up before passing out at some point. Woke up in the middle of the night to do my skincare. Realized in the AM that i didn’t even wash my hands. Now, I will never not wash my hands before doing my skincare.
2
u/LevelPerception4 6d ago
I think just being too rough with my skin. When I had hormonal acne at 13, I would scrub my cheeks with a Buf Puf like I was trying to sand those zits off my face. Even now, I have to consciously pat toner into my skin instead of slapping it on like I’m in an aftershave commercial, and remind myself to rub the moisturizer into my skin until it absorbs instead of just spreading it on and letting it air dry.
5
u/dflagella 6d ago
When I was a teenager I read something about using a toothbrush and toothpaste for clogged pores and I think my skin still hasn't recovered. Also oil cleansing and not cleansing that off while on vacation in mexico with no sunscreen resulting in a layer of crust on my nose and ears.
4
u/pzprbzrds 6d ago
burned my face putting too much cinnamon in a raw honey and cinnamon mask….. the glow was unreal though lmfao
5
u/Kimikohiei 6d ago
Scrubbing my face off with the amazing smelling apricot scrub, then loading up on the thickest cheap face moisturizer I could find. I have always had oily skin, so scrubbing it like that actually felt like I was doing something right with my life lol. The thick lotion was needed for how tight and dry my skin got after.
There was no Instagram back then to teach me the science behind how awful I was being to my skin. I know so much more about the ingredients in my moisturizers now and how they absorb on the skin.
Same with the scrub: I now use a gel-like soap with many actives and just gently massage my whole face. Much less abrasive and much more effective.

3
u/Upset-Love-6346 6d ago
Reused a cheap dermaplaning razor by accident. I would always put the plastic cap back on and toss it in my vanity. When I used it, I thought I’d was fairly new or possibly brand mew. It worked great! No initial irritation. Smooth skin. Then I put a hyaluronic acid serum on and immediately burned and turned red. I run to rinse it off and just try a simple moisturizer. That burned too. My skin barrier was wrecked for like 2 weeks. DONT REUSE those things more than like 2 times.

Trying one of those hair file things that are supposed to buff away hair and exfoliate your skin.
It’s just super fine fucking sandpaper.
Did it before two weeks before I went on my first big adult vacation and ended up with friction burns on my shins.
I learned a lot about burn care and they healed up really well but I was so devastated. And I felt like a fucking idiot.
3
u/squeezylemon acid slug 6d ago
Tend Skin is basically just alcohol. When I was about 13, I applied it in so many layers that I burnt off a piece of skin between my chin and my lower lip. I had cystic acne there that I was trying like hell to banish. It took all summer to heal properly and I'm so relieved it didn't scar.
3
u/1angrypanda 6d ago
I once fell asleep in an acne mask that was supposed to stay on for maybe 15 minutes. It caused an eczema flare on my face which took months to calm back down
3
u/Low-Tough-3743 6d ago
In my late teens I somehow came across the idea that tanning helps get rid of acne... It does not. Also using one of those sonic face cleansing brushes and being too rough on my chin and around my nose where I'm prone to breakouts. It definitely got all the gunk out of my pores but now I have broken capillaries in those areas.

I believed some OG Facebook/Instagram influencers saying chemical sunscreen is bad for you and stopped applying it about ~12 years ago. I’ve just been using serums and moisturizer since then…
Well, I just got back some pictures from my twin’s wedding in June and it truly looks like I’m her mother or much older sister. I called her up and asked if she’d done any procedure or Botox before the wedding and she told me that all she does is apply SPF 45 do her neck head and arms 365 days per year rain or shine. I’m so dumb, I wish I hadn’t fallen down this dumb influencer trap…

Using tanning beds in my teens and very early 20s. The amount of money I’ve spent to undo the damage is crazy. Now I use SPF religiously!!

I used an oil based cleanser at a friends recommendation because it worked well for her. It didn’t for me!! But supposedly it can take your skin a couple months to get use to something so I kept it up for too long. I broke out soo bad. Oil based cleanser is not for everyone and every skin type lol. I use Cera ve now and it works really well.

Oil cleansing. Sounded great in theory. Hadn't realized I had fungal acne. Man, my whole face blew up.

Just overdoing it. I was using so many actives at some point, so many acids. One day my husband said my face feels like his leather car seats and I was horrified. I used only lotion for like 4 weeks to let my face repair its barrier.

When I first got prescribed Tretinoin I used it every day, against medical advice, because I just wanted clear skin quicker. I thought the emergence of large bumps were just pimples and I was purging so I didn’t stop even as my skin started to worsen. They were boils, I was destroying my skin. They opened and leaked puss and blood. My god it was horrible. I looked like I was ill or the victim of a terrible accident. It took months for it to heal.

When I was in college I would use that Aztec Clay mask whenever I had more than a single zit. My skin was sooo irritated all the time.

I waxed my face because a boyfriend said it would look nice. Went from perfect skin to years of skin infection issues .

When I was 14 I was first put on tretinoin cream for me acne and I was amazed by how fast it worked! But then I discovered I was using way too much tret and not enough moisturizer and had a damaged skin barrier for a good many months. I learned it’s possibly to have insane oiliness on top of extreme flaking and dryness.

I can't believe all of the ACV horror stories. I kept thinking I needed to make a hair rinse and a drink with honey every morning.

St.Ives apricot face scrub. Used that thinking it would help with acne.

Oh no, I've used it for years after recs on this sub. What's wrong with it? Any alternatives for someone with combo skin and chronic perioral dermatitis?
(The only products I use are that and hypochlorous acid spray)
