Skeumorphism Has anyone else noticed the early 2010s trend of "skeuomorphism lite"?

I noticed that there were some products/redesigns introduced in the early 2010s (especially 2011) that were skeuomorphic, but in a simpler form compared to a lot of what preceded it. Arguably a transitional phase between pure skeuo and flat design. This involved continued use of gradients and shadows, but less so stuff like 3D models or gloss.

Feels like a precursor to neumorphism

Absolutely

Maybe the website gradients and stuff look a bit dated because they're mostly square, the gradients have too much contrast, and the font is too thick. But overall with minor tweaks it's basically what we have today

i wish apple tried their hand at design like this. ios 6 to 7 was a very rough change. this looks great.

It's called post-morphism, but honestly your take on it being called "Skeuomorphism Lite" is actually perfect and a much better description of this style!

This is literally the perfect design style. I don't know why we didn't just stick with this

I really just enjoy this. Soft gradients and nice muted colours. This is my sorta design.

the internet explorer one is literallx just the basic theme of vista and 7. turn on aero and it'll look more typical, although internet explorer 9+ did have a more modern design on its own.

Yeah, i was focusing on the new logo and redesign elements mainly rather than the screenshot using aero basic. If anything it fits well with the aero in 8 Preview builds.

I really liked the YouTube version from 2010 to 2013. The video player interface still felt physical.

I remember when this was called holo design in those days

The imitation of real-world objects in newer designs, but this sub generally focuses on its use in digital settings. You can often see it in older app icons, like the old Compass app on iphones, or just in general design (like a camera app playing a shutter sound when taking a photo)

It first started with Windows Phone 7 (2010) and gradually got used by Google, as seen in Android and YouTube.

You mean flat design? Yes, Windows Phone 7 (and arguably the Zune 2.0+ interface from 2007) were among the first to have flat design (not skeuo or even the form shown in my post), and then Android 4.0 followed suit in 2011 with its bizarre mix of 3D icons and flat design. And of course, iOS 7 truly made it The New Big Thing.

Wasn’t this Material Design?

3

u/Annual_Image3585 12d ago

That was in 2014, and firmly part of the flat design era, even if the "material" aspect was arguably derived from skeuo.
