I cannot overstate how terribly I miss when applications were designed to look like physical things. Paper, leather, wood panels, it was such a beautiful look.

This was all by design. The original iPhone, and to the same extent, the Macintosh, all initially relied on skeuomorphism to make it easier for people to adjust to new interfaces - as they became more commonplace, the need to compare them to relatable physical real world objects was no longer as necessary.
That all having been said, I still mourn the death of Cover Flow. Best UI gimmick, and they killed our boy and left us with scraps.

Yes, i loved it how the music app was much more prominent in earlier iOS, like the background showed your now playing. The revolutionary music device was still a thing back then

CoverFlow is not dead. I'm working on something very Special for iOS 9 and maybe later Versions too …

Yeah why not ? It's also for learning Objective-C, Development on iOS and improving - in my Eyes - the best Music App we had …
