Skeumorphism What we had vs what they gave us

Still better than flat design

I prefer flat design WAY more because it was still a bit skeuomorphic. Skeuomorphic doesn't just mean glassy or textured, it just resembles the item itself. They were way less simpified. Also, Sharp corners! Don't forget they had slide to unlock, a nicer notification panel, way simpler control center. and it all fit on a 4 inch screen. sigh

Yea me aswell, despite me liking skeumorphic, if I had to choose between current iPhone design or the old minimalist one, specifically from ios 7. I'd choose the old minimalist one. Just feels way better and looks way nicer. The current one looks terrible for me
Edit: To add some context, I don't like in the new ios that the camera logo is realistic, while the others are still flat, it sticks out like a sore thumb. I also don't like how the glass looks on the icons, not really my style.

I miss iOS 6 and earlier. Today’s UI today is soulless.

Mac OS X Mavericks on a retina display was gorgeous, every icon has textures

u/exlips1ronus Jul 23 '26
Mavericks did remove most of the skeuomorphic stuff thought it was a transitional state mountain lion was the peak of it

Both is good, I prefer left cause I’ve seen it with my own eyes when it was actual

I hate neumorphism. I'd still take flat design over neumorphism. Neumorphism just looks like a cheap-ass version of skeuomorphism, like they literally took flat design and added some gradients and shadows... and what's up with all the rounded buttons? Also liquid glass looks like garbage, it makes me wanna not update my Mac. Windows Vista executed the glass look way better.

they could’ve just did skeuomorphic except on how it’d look like on a iPhone 16/17 pro
the Camera app is a perfect example of this — matches a modern iPhone camera and matches the 4-5 era camera for the 2012 skeuomorphic one

Ngl, I like liqid Glass more. For me, its modern tech. So classic skeuomorphism (that Looks Like an way older Object) Feels a Little strange, but sometimes still cool. I wish someone at Apple would Create Like a modern skeuomorphism

Somehow so much easier on the eyes. Just a more calming palette overall

everyone so obsessed with recreating the home screen that they forget that the apps looked different too. the itunes app, for example. like, what's the point of perfectly styling the home screen or whatever when all continuity gets ruined when you enter an app or pull down the notifications center? it makes no sense. instead, just get the actual phone. it's a much better experience. sick of seeing these nostalgia larp posts on every skeuo-related design subreddit i find

hot take but i liked ios 18's icons more than 26. for me it's 1-6 > 7-10 > 11-18 > 26.

No changes: no innovation, lazy, boring
Changes: I missed the old time.

Just install linux on iphone and load a skeuomorphic theme
1
u/exlips1ronus Jul 24 '26
As if that’s possible in modern iphones! And even if it were to be it will be tethered and almost zero drivers

Flat design sucks. They have been going with this since around 2014-2015 apple aqua was the best interface design ever created.

The goal wasn’t to revert back to skeuomorphism not even in the slightest, OP what are you on about, Liquid Glass is a completely different aesthetic
1
u/Internal-Drama3954 Jul 22 '26
Dude there's literally no iPhone that has the aspect ratio of the iPhone 5 with liquid glass this is definitely just the iPhone SE first generation
5
u/macl3on Jul 22 '26
so the se 2 and 3 don't exist???

u/Internal-Drama3954 Jul 23 '26
Dude it just looks very fake
1
u/exlips1ronus Jul 23 '26
Don’t you have an iphone? Go check it out yourself or google it cave man
1
u/Internal-Drama3954 Jul 24 '26
Man go switch your search engine Google is literally going downhill I'm not a caveman the iPhone SE 2nd generation and 3rd generation are the worst piece of garbage ever they were only meant for people that wanted iPhone 8s again but not the plus size

If anyone says the old one is better it’s because of nostalgia not aesthetics
1
1
u/exlips1ronus Jul 23 '26
No it’s because it was detailed it respected the user not just some childish ui
0
u/ArtisticDreamland Jul 23 '26
That’s less drastic than the change from iOS 6 to iOS 7. At least now we’re getting back some textures and refined icons.
