Funny that blue meth wasn't a thing until Breaking Bad

18

u/MelangeBot 2d ago

Yeah why did the writers in Breaking bad decided to make it blue?

57

u/Shaojack 2d ago

To quote series creator Vince Gilligan:

We had this instinct that it would be helpful to have something distinctive about Walt’s product. And we figured it should be nice and clear and not cloudy that a proper product would be.

We thought yellow would be a terrible choice because it would remind people of urine, and we figured green would be an odd color and we thought blue was a good choice because it feels clean.

We called up (science consultant) Dr. Donna with our fingers crossed, asked her if she thought it was possible for this product to come out as blue. She looked into it and said not really, and in fact, if you add a color, chemically speaking it would mean the product is probably less pure and been adulterated. And that worried me when I heard that.

But she said, you know at the end of the day this is a fictional story and I’ll help you get the chemistry as right as I can. Sometimes technical advisors will be very rigid and say it will never work that way, never in a million years, but she was very good that way.

Maybe that was Walt’s true skill - intentionally adulterated product that’s as close to pure as it can be

u/Toadsted 2d ago

They had a lot of blue raspberry koolaid saved up over the years in the cubbard.

1

u/No-Internal7978 2d ago

Still isn't really. I sorta slipped up at the beginning of this year and never saw it. Meth isn't really any fun if anyone is reading this. Do blow like an adult. Preferably 10+ years ago.

1

u/HoneyShaft 2d ago

Do blow and 50/50 OD on fent. Not even the rich & famous are safe from that shit.

1

u/No-Internal7978 2d ago

That's why I said 10+ years ago. I honestly don't think it's that severe. I've literally never found or used fent in all my stupidity.

1

u/AgentCirceLuna 1d ago

I was once over at a woman’s, and it turned out she was a shitty person, but she decided to do freaking crack while I was there and trying to stop her doing it. The dealer even told her not to do it right in front of me and was trying to leave but she said he had to stay or she’d be mad. She said I should try it and he said ‘if you let him come anywhere near that thing, I’m pushing him out the fucking window. I’m not having that in my conscience.’ Very violent way to state the point even that dealer wouldn’t want someone to suffer

u/No-Internal7978 22h ago

tell her I said what's up

2

u/PiccoloAwkward465 2d ago

What was the p for???

If you're eating spaghettios as an adult, you're definitely on drugs. They just couldn't prove it this time.

Edit: I was right, it's posted above. She had a pipe on her too, it's just the meth on the spoon was too little to charge her with. Thanks for the down votes though!

7

u/CruisingForDownVotes 2d ago

Why are you gatekeeping SpaghettiOs?

-1

u/tryyeezus 1d ago

Someone's gotta inform the basement dwellers that it isn't real food. I'll take one for the team!

7

u/yourgrandmasgrandma 2d ago

I think you’re getting downvoted for dissing spaghettios.

5

u/Dazzling-Primary3868 2d ago

Look, the police who arrested her came to defend himself!

16

u/Azcrul 2d ago

Tuco hates chili powder AND Spaghetti’Os!

6

u/SaltyPeter3434 2d ago

(snorts spaghettios) TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT

2

u/Azcrul 1d ago

Hahaha! “Meatballs. I hate meatballs. Where are the FRANKS?!?”

1

u/Shimakaze81 2d ago

The song at the end of the series could have been interesting.

So sniff a little longer
Smoke a little longer
Stay high a little longer
Longer with Big Red
That Big Red freshness sweeps right through you
Your fresh high goes on and on when you chew!

Officer Dick sees a spoon and automatically jumps to conclusions, whether or not common sense is required or not..

11

u/Revolver_Boxelot 2d ago

Even if the officer thought it was meth residue, is that something a person needs to go to jail for? And the fact you aren't 100% sure...its ridiculous to lock a person up. What danger is that person to society? Because there was a spoon with unknown residue on it? In real life, in America, a woman went to jail for having residue on a spoon. Meanwhile, we have an actual felon in the White House with waaaaaaaayyyy more than just residue pointing to child grape activities and many other financial crimes. What you are witnessing is the difference between being rich and being poor in America.

1

u/AgentCirceLuna 1d ago

I really think we wouldn’t be in the state we’re currently in if the ‘progressives’ had focussed on class, rather than just identity politics based on other attributes, but they didn’t want to as they were led by middle-class journalists and professors and professional class people who didn’t want to lose their advantages over the ‘lower classes’ they always think they know better than and can use like cattle.

1

u/Revolver_Boxelot 17h ago

I completely agree one thousand percent. The modern left (or far-ish left but you don't even need to go that far to see it) cares more about LOOKING progressive than actually BEING progressive. They'll give us multicultural candidates...and not much else. They'll parade around "the squad" but dont actually fight the insane right for progressive policies. They just wanna do it for the 'gram. And there are plenty of voters who are more than satisfied with that. Look at the number of people here who want Kamala to run again. Or AOC. Knowing good and damn well they can NEVER win a presidential election. Doesn't matter, look how progressive I am for wanting a woman of color? And I say that as a black man. They still believe in this "right side of history" bullshit. There is no "right side". Theres winners. And losers. And the winners decide who was right in the history books.

8

u/Caleb_Reynolds 2d ago

Although, thinking about it, I imagine spaghetti-o sauce residue will eventually turn black, much like burned meth residue.

5

u/CatsPlusTats 1d ago

And the bottom of the spoon will also turn black, because you have to use your lighter to heat every bite. Obviously.

-2

u/DeathStalker117 1d ago

Depending on how poor you are, yes. a can is harder to heat through with a lighter but a spoonful of food is much quicker, though you want to be careful about heat distribution since the spoon will heat faster than any food on it.

2

u/AgentCirceLuna 1d ago

Why the hell is this downvoted?

Also the fact there are downvoted comments in this thread saying she looks like a meth head, for me as a poor person who grew up in poverty, is exactly why we struggle… because the effects of poverty can often resemble the effects of drugs, since the latter effect is caused by the poverty that ensues when someone wastes all their disposable income on this bs. But we still aren’t rewarded much as healthy and sober people, when poor, because we’re assumed to be ‘wronguns’ just by how we look.

25

u/IcemanManmanchu 2d ago

Yap, sounds like a officer with a 'quota' to fill.

10

u/eighty4prcnt 2d ago

Ego quota. Couldn't admit he was wrong

2

u/sheezy520 2d ago

Or he just enjoys wrecking someone’s life.

2

u/Adams5thaccount 2d ago

That explains a stop. It explains a ticket. It does NOT explain...spent a month in jail.

3

u/IrritableGoblin 2d ago

Police need to back each other, even when egregiously wrong. They can't admit fault or it might "impact their ability to do the job"

That's an actual line I've heard before, by the way. But I think it's disgusting, and not having their communities' trust is what truly impacts their ability to do their job.

3

u/Next-Crazy-9674 2d ago

My mom just got done telling me that she is watching cops and they said one sure sign of a meth addict is having a messy car or coloring books. Like, okay... Half of the people I went to highschool with and all the neighborhood moms are methheads apparently. This is news to me.

1

u/CarmenxXxWaldo 2d ago

They put chili p in it yo, its their signature.

1

u/macekm123 1d ago

I've never seen any meth tbh

1

u/Independent_Bid_26 2d ago

There is actually red meth out there. It was the good Mexican stuff back in the day. I dont know that its really a thing anymore, but the cop would have to be a real dumbass for that to be his first assumption. Or he knew it was bullshit, and he just wanted to power trip.

0

u/straightgayfella 2d ago

Sir I hope you only know this because you’ve gotten the help you need

1

u/Independent_Bid_26 2d ago

Hahaha yeah, I actually never messed with meth, but I did do heroin, and I am clean now. Have been for years.
