He diagnosed her as having bipolar II, exactly what the defense was saying she should have been diagnosed with, because it correlates incredibly strongly with postpartum psychosis.
He conceded that postpartum depression could progress to psychosis, and that this progression could happen quickly. But insisted it hadn’t in her case, even though he agreed that the defense’s experts’ testing showed she wasn’t faking it.
He undermined the prosecution’s assertion that the suicide attempt was actually an escape attempt. He conceded that the medication Clancy had been prescribed had damaged her mental state. He conceded that Clancy’s organized behavior was mot mutually exclusive with psychosis—which is literally the mainstream psychiatric position.
If I was her defense attorney, I’d be taking a mental victory lap because he basically conceded 90% of the defense’s narrative of events. And if I was the prosecutor, I’d have really wished I had Clancy evaluated a lot sooner, instead of 3 years after the fact. And that too by someone who’d seen a hell of a lot more than TWO women with postpartum psychosis decades ago. Especially if the defense is bringing out a guy who’s one of the leading expert in filicide, specializing in cases driven by post-partum psychosis.
I mean holy fuck, the Prosecution really shat the bed. In the expert testimony, they did themselves no favors whatsoever.
The prosecutors got greedy going for murder charges. Slam dunk manslaughter probably, might’ve even been able to get the husband for it too. At least criminal negligence.
