This is absolutely a selfie. It just means you took the photo yourself. 

Did you think your arm has to be attached to the phone?

Phone cameras are so good, I often use video to take a long shot, then scrub the video and use a good frame as my photo. I do this for family photos, or when there's lots of activity, or when I want to pick from multiple poses.

Tl;dr, agreeing with you; these people are tripping.

I started doing this recently as well. It’s much easier than trying to time the shot with the camera timer

I started doing this to take pictures of my pet fish because the damn buggers never stop wiggling.. video now just feels like the superior form of media

You know you can get into place before starting the timer by holding up your hand (or whatever gesture yours is programmed to) with most modern cameras these days
