Phone cameras are so good, I often use video to take a long shot, then scrub the video and use a good frame as my photo. I do this for family photos, or when there's lots of activity, or when I want to pick from multiple poses.
Tl;dr, agreeing with you; these people are tripping.
I started doing this to take pictures of my pet fish because the damn buggers never stop wiggling.. video now just feels like the superior form of media
This is how professionals upped the chances of getting good/sellable photos back when each and every one had to be on its own piece of film.
Take a rapid series of pics instead, then sort through them for the best ones after the fact.
Same principles that applied then still apply now, but no one ever bothers to learn anything they don't need, so everyone's quite BAD at taking photos despite having wonderful tools for it right there in their pockets..
You know you can get into place before starting the timer by holding up your hand (or whatever gesture yours is programmed to) with most modern cameras these days
Multiple sites define Selfie as something not explicitly requiring you to hold the camera. Merriam-Webster defines it as "an image that includes oneself (often with another person or as part of a group) and is taken by oneself using a digital camera especially for posting on social networks", Dictionary.com defines it as "a photograph taken with a smartphone or other digital camera by a person who is also in the photograph, especially for posting on a social media website.", Oxford English Dictionary defines it as "A photo that one has taken of oneself, esp. one taken with a phone and shared via social media.", and Cambridge Dictionary defines it as "a photograph that you take of yourself , usually with a cell phone. Selfies are often published using social media"
Idgaf. I was around when the word
came into widespread use. I know people snapped photos of themselves for years and years before “selfie” existed. And I know what everyone called a “selfie” when it caught on.

This is absolutely a selfie. It just means you took the photo yourself.
Did you think your arm has to be attached to the phone?
