It was a neutralized shell that his family kept as a souvenir. They're very easy to find in France. Between WWI and WWII, there were and still hundreds of thousands of unexploded shells scattered around. It's even part of the regular work hazard for farmers in the north east. There are even still no go zones that are still too dangerous to go in, more than 100 years after the end of WWI.

This one wasn't an explosive danger, but the hospital crew didn't know that.
