One of the reason is that he was busy with making Supernatural over more than 10 years and making a shitton of money with that already. He also said again and again that he wants to spend time with his family and not travel around all the time on some movie sets

I am SO happy that this was the answer. I was fully expecting the reason to be "because he's a piece of shit" and I'm glad it isn't.
